I got one of the more recent yugo batches on classic and I know I missed the cheap ones but for what I got I don't regret paying 400.

Try and find something in an FLGS, if possible. Classic has a habit of deleting negative comments/reviews, and the overall quality of the individual firearm may be inconsistent. Also, never get the "best of 5" option. It never makes a difference.

Honestly, if you're looking for wood furniture surplus gun, there's a lot of options.

I think classic has AMD-65's that are fairly inexpensive, but you'd need something more comfortable than that wire stock to shoot with.
Norinco sks' can still be found for a decent price on Gunbroker, and if you get the M or Paratrooper models, they accept AK mags. Oh, and the chinks chomed lined too.

Any entry level ak would do it, but other options, like a Hakim (8mm semi rifle used by Egypt). Yugo ak's are another option, but I'm guessing the limit of your budget is 600 or less, so that would need to be taken into account...

Is the slav make of the gun non-negotiable?

I love my SKS, but I'd recommend a .22 for your first rifle.

Could i use screws to attach a new truinion? I have the fixed stock version and i want a folder, but it also has to be convertible for legal reasons.
