I like the idea of a fairly heavy round of a 308 win mag or 30 06. What are the positives negatives between these 2? Are there other rounds that would have longer range capabilities?
>>
>.308 win mag
>30 06 for long range
get out summer

.308 is a good marksman round and you'll get decent range out of it. Something like a .338 Lapua Magnum will get you out past 1000 yards easy but the rounds are expensive and guns chambered in .338 Lapua are also expensive.
>>
>>34363308
You like the idea because you no clue, and you've likely been told 308 and 30-06 by ignorant fudds whose ballistic 'knowledge' came from reading an article in guns and ammo 30 years ago.
>>
>>34363341
Depends on your definition of "long range". .308 is decent to about 300 yards, which is longer than a lot of ranges and it's much cheaper and lighter than a round like .300 win mag that will surpass it.
>>
So if im correct, the longest range round goes in this order
1. 338 lapua
2. 300 win mag
3. 308
4. 3006

This correct?
Also i realize i dont lnow shit, u guys dont have to be fags about it...

>>34363526
I don't think you can get the T3 in .338

.300 win mag is probably what you want
>>
>>34363613
I read a really good ballistics chart and the 300 wm looks even better than the 338 lapua

At short-medium range there won't be much difference but .338 Lapua is effective well beyond 1500 yards whereas .300 wm usually tops out around 1000.

I had a Tikka T3 in 308 and was able to get to 800 yards with it. 168/175/178gr projectiles. In theory I should have been able to hit 1100yds before subsonic but the 900/1000 targets never went ding. My issue with the T3 versus the CTR is the thin barrel; the CTR is already on the thin side for a competition gun. The T3 is probably the best hunting rifle out there though.

If you're looking for a fun long range gun, just do yourself a favor and get the cookie cutter 6.5Creedmoor Tikka CTR 24" build. If that's too pricey, the Savage 10 FCP-SR or 10T-SR (24") 6.5 Creedmoor rifles shoot as good but have rougher bolts, triggers, stocks, and mags.
>>
Is a 338 win mag t3 the same as a 338 lapua?
>>
>>34364500
Nope. Look up "338 win mag vs 338 lapua" in Google images to get an idea
>>
>>34363308
Why the fuck would you want 30-06? Trying to impress fudds, or do you just have a shoulder made of concrete? Also, 308 win mag? Is that some retarded child of 308 and 300 win mag?

If you really want the longest range, get .300 Win Mag, but be prepared to buy a scope more expensive than the rifle to get the full potential. Better to go for something like 6.5 Creedmoor if you don't plan on going more than 1200 yds or so. You can go a further with .300 win mag, but from your post I'm assuming you don't have a whole lot of experience in this sort of thing.

Bergara is making some good rifles in 6.5mm. Their 14 line is at a good price. The HMRs are good rifles for around $1000 and the BMPs have nicer furniture for $1500. I've got one and it shoots great.
>>
>>34363442
>308 is decent to about 300 yards
sublte. good effort.
>>
>>34363526
If you're actually serious about the extreme long range, I would at a minimum go no lower than 300 win mag. I would probably start at .338, and consider .408 CheyTac, .416 Barrett, or .50 BMG.
>>
>>34364612
What's wrong about that? A heavy .308 load exhibits higher velocity and less drop at 300y than .300wm does at 500y and .300wm is used all the time in 1000y competition shooting.
>>
I've been shooting factory federal 30-06 150gr out to 200 with 2in groupings. I can only shoot about 5 groups before my shoulder hurts. It keeps ammo cost down.
>>
>>34363526
>3. 308
>4. 3006
>This correct?
No. .308 is just .30-06 but shorter.
