Joining the Marines, generally speaking, is a poor life decision that kids generally make because they think it will give them a better opportunity to kill people or get easier lays. Not sure why a mother would brag about either

As long as you EAS (End of Active Service) with an honorable discharge, you can re enlist in a different branch. My old company's armorer reached E-5 in the navy, got out, and enlisted in the Marines

Once your contract is over you can jump ship into any other branch you want. There's no law that says you can only enlist into one branch of the military. Fun Fact, By Joining the Marines first, after you EAS, you can go into any other branch without having to attend their basic training camps and you get to transfer with your full rank that you earned previously. You'll only need to attend their Primary MOS school. But if you wanted to join the Marines after serving in any other military branch you have to attend ALL Marine Corps Basic training and your rank get's reset to E2.
