The thread for all things precise, from 17 HMR to 50 BMG.

How many Anons out there hunt over bean fields?

Is there a better factory rifle than the Sendero for that?

I always stick to hand loads or FGMM when trying to determine a rifle's mechanical accuracy.

Were you the one asking about that Savage 10 FCP in the last thread?

>>
>>34363096

Yeah, iirc I mentioned the terrible quality of Savage magazines.

How long do you plan to keep it in that stock? Is it an actual accustock? Or one of the cheap polymer lookalikes?
>>
>>34363108
>Is it an actual accustock?
yes. i plan to keep it forever, ill upgrade to a better rifle when i get better and have the money.
>>
>>34363119

Don't sell the Savage short, it's a terrific action and barrel. The BA series routinely wins in the Sniper Challenge competition circuit.

If you start to get the urge to tinker, a new stock or chassis would freshen up that rifle for you right away.

I like the MDT LSS for chassis, and Bell & Carlson Medalist series if you like conventional stocks.
>>
>>34363146
ill keep those in mind

Seems to be a slow day.

I've recently been wondering how 22lr would group out of my precision AR with a CMMG conversion bolt.

What's the best commonly available 22lr out there to see how it performs?

Not well, the barrel's twist rate would be twice as fast as ideal.

Probably regular CCI SV. Wolf and Eley are common but I wouldn't call them commonly available.

My CZ shoots about 1 MOA with CCI SV until 100 yards.
>>
>>34363962

I've got an older 1/9 twist upper too. I'll see if it groups any better.

I've got a bunch of federal automatch, but that stuff feeds/functions terribad.

I put a CMMG in my precision AR, and had decent accuracy. It wasn't a tack driver, but it was usable for practical purposes.
>>
Does anyone have experience with the Savage 110 BA in .300 Win Mag? A local store has one for $1,215. I've heard good things about it but never held one, so is it worth it?
>>
>>34364154

It'll be heavy, but Savage makes great, accurate rifles.

It's definitely a tactical style setup; if you wanted to hunt with it, I'd get something lighter.

When you do start reloading, I'd suggest 168gr ELD-M and varget (more temp stable than IMR4064) ~42gr. Keep the brass consistent headstamp (lapua, hornady or starline)

I was just messing around with the last of my Hornady 168BTHP bullets and the last trickles of 4064 with some fully prepped Remington and BHA Match (two different sets of BHA had super different case capacities) and it shot slightly better than my usual 168A/Z-Max and varget loads (44.1gr 42 seems pretty low)... Almost made me want to pick up some more 4064 but that would be silly... I did get another pound of CFE223 to try and load up 75gr BTHP 223 with more velocity. Factory data for that powder seems to be all over the map...

>>
>>34364402
Yeah, I was bouncing all around with which projectiles, trying to keep the COAL as long as I could to reduce pressure. I think the 175/178's that aren't poly-tipped are okay or go for the 165/168's that are poly-tipped for the shorter COAL but still good BC & velocity balance.

Ended up doing some stupid fucking hot rounds with the 168 ELD-M's during pressure tests that BTFO'd a primer.

Now I'm on to my 6.5CM with Nosler 140 RDF's and Reloder 16. Happy enough with 2750ft/s. I think I could do some Hornady brass and squeeze out some more velocity but I'd like to stick with a set of brass (lapua) for a long time.

Bipod recomendations? I like shooting from a bench and sandbags but want to get out in the field more.
>>
>>34364455
Atlas or Harris w/ swivel
>>
>>34364455
My caldwell clone of a harris works well enough but the tip of the tightening screw hopped around so I JB welded the everliving fuck out of it and it's good. May eventually do an atlas when i'm out of school just cause the flex in the legs is a biiiiiiit annoying.
>>
>>34364455

A Larue Harris will save you from putting a KMW pod loc lever and QD mount on a standard Harris.

Be sure to get a notched leg version.
>>
>>34363048
No bean fields. I could hunt a tree field, maybe. In the process of building a 350 yard range right now.
>>
>>34364455
when you mean field shooting, do you mean actual field shooting or shooting in a field out the back of your vehicle? If the shooting conditions will be remotely similar to a bench go with a Harris HBLMS. The shorter one, HBRMS, is fine for shooting from a table or being low to the ground but the added height on the taller model gives you more options if you need to go higher because of brush being in the way.

If you will be shooting off rocks, uneven terrain, in addition to the normal bench type scenarios then go with an atlas. It gives the shooter more options for any scenario, but unless you truly utilize it you're just paying for the peen status.

Looking for an entry precision, rifle. Not really daddy warbucks here, and am looking at a tikka t3x. Are there better rifles at/below that price point?
>>
>>34364731
The trees themselves. They eat the buds and fuck around because of the cover the trees provide. Usually there's corn growing next to the trees too, so they can get fat on corn then plop down in the trees and have an easy life.

Deer can fuck trees up though by eating the buds, however a fucked up looking tree is still salvageable though. They just cut the branches off and make Christmas wreathes. It has nothing to do with hunting, but it's just a neat fact. And don't eat deer that have been hanging in the spruce.

I'm partial to Harris and Harris clones with extendo levers. You can get levers CHEAP CHEAP here
http://www.t-nuts.com

The Chicom Harris knockoffs work but they feel cheap and the thumb wheels loosen more easily. They're also 1/4 the cost.

>>34364484
Yeah but at great expense and he might not even need or want a 1913 QD. Especially when a Harris is already QD off a sling stud.

>Yeah but at great expense and he might not even need or want a 1913 QD. Especially when a Harris is already QD off a sling stud.

Like I said, IF he was going to get a pod loc lever and a QD adapter anyway, it would cheaper to just get the LaRue.

I learned that lesson after getting an ADM adapter and PodLoc for my Harris.

Maybe in a next thread. It's moving days here in Qc, rifle in storage... It's a nice semi-budget setup.

Really nice sendero tho! How does it group?
>>
can someone explain the mrad reticle to me please, looking to pick up a scope.
>>
>>34370658

It'll group under 1 MOA if I shoot slow, but the barrel heats up pretty quick. I'll get vertical stringing around the 10 round mark if I'm going at a steady pace.
>>
>>34372074

You want the adjustments in your turret to match the subtensions in your reticle. MRAD and MIL are the same thing. If you have a mildot reticle, you'll want MIL adjustments.
>>
>>34372482
1 click is .1 mrads, im having trouble understanding the holdovers and adjusting for farther targets, past my zero.
>>
>>34372516

It's 1 cm per click at 100 meters. It works just like MOA, but it's a base 10 system.
>>
>>34372557
so how many clicks to go from 100 to 200? links to somewhere credible i can read up on this?
>>
>>34372588

That depends on what you're shooting. You'll need to feed the speed and ballistic coefficient of your bullet into a ballistic calculator to compute your drop at distance.

I recommend Strelok for a smart phone.

Hornady has a simple but decent one on their website:

http://www.hornady.com/ballistics-resource/ballistics-calculator
>>
