What's the best starter gun that is new York legal?
Ruger 10/22 and a bus ticket to Pennsylvania.
You can build an AR with non pinned mags if you use a receiver spur grip, fixed stock and no muzzle device or bayo lug
Otherwise look at SKSes, Sporter saigas or mini14

Get an AR lower. Build to your tastes. Do not comply.

Fitelite/AresvSCR build, it has a natural feeling curved stock with the buffertube angled down inside it, as opposed to a typical AR15 where you'd have to put a really shitty non-pistolgrip on it to make it legal in NY.
Optionally go for a Ruger Mini-14, those are good too (though avoid the pre-2005 rifles, starting with a 180 serial number, they have mediocre accuracy at best and due to the very thin barrel they heat up very fast and will string shots severely until it cools down).

NY is more than NYC. Not many people in Western NY or Upstate have much interest in SAFE Act compliance.

I'm closer to Rochester and deal with the featureless bullshit
I just know some fud at my range would say some shit if I didn't... And any changes I made can be easily reversed if I ever GTFO this shitty state.

Livingston?

North chili is where I shoot, small private range with not bad membership price. Mostly fuds with boltguns tho

Ah. Groveland here. There is an abandoned rail line behind my house. It is about the closest it gets to public land around here.
