Hey Arisuka, if you pass by can you give me an estimated manufacture date for a Koishikawa Type-38 long rifle with a serial of 212662? It's got a "00" prefix added to the serial, so I assume it's spent time as a school rifle.

Thanks.

My book estimates that it was made about 1909.

The 00 prefix does signify it was sent to a school. It probably has the 文 stamped on the receiver?

Also, it's Tokyo Arsenal, not Koishkawa.

So I'm looking to get some milsurp for my first rifle and I have some questions.
What are some good ones to buy and what prices should I try and get them for?
What are some good ammo brands and what prices are really good? Example: I saw a company called Monarch selling 20 rounds of 7.62x54r for 10 bucks as opposed to Tulammo which sells 20 for 20.
What are good places to get milsurp and are swap meets and gunshows good places
And how do I know if it's a rip off or not what should I look for?

Oh also, is milsurp a good idea for Nogunz 1st firearm or should I get something else?
>>
>>34362312
hope you have a fat wallet. For your first milsurp rifle id recommend a south american mauser of some sort. For factory ammo I buy ppu they are inexpensive the brass is top notch if you want to reload. Your only real options for finding this stuff is to check your local gun stores a lot or going to gun shows or paying through the nose on gunbroker. The only way your going to know if your getting ripped off or not is buy doing research, theres not like rule or anything else that can help you there.
>>
>>34362312
Auctions are amazing. I just got a sporterized Spanish Mauser, a sporterized Enfield in a really nice stock with a scope, and a Nylon 77 with a scope for $500

Oh yes YES; I wanted a WW1-or-earlier vintage T38.

>It probably has the 文 stamped on the receiver?
It may have at one time, but no longer. 'Mum is scrubbed, so perhaps 文 went at the same time. Bolt assembly number matches floorplate number, so I'm hoping they are matching. Apparently the number on the bayonet lug is not the same. Has dust cover but no cleaning rod. A little rusty and dirty from the (very poor) pictures. We'll see what's what when I get it in my hands tomorrow morning.

>is milsurp a good idea for Nogunz 1st firearm or should I get something else?
Depends on the milsurp. I think a .22 training rifle like pic related would be a great first firearm.
>>
>>34362326
No, it's really not good for new shooters usually. It's expensive, ammo isn't cheap or easy to find a lot of the time, and for people who aren't accustomed to shooting they're usually less fun. Certainly less practical. Unless you're like me and have a raging history boner or are a hipster, stick something like a AR.

Also none of this applies to .22lr trainers that you can find. Those are great first time rifles and they qualify as milsurp. But they're usually fairly costly, compared to other .22s.
>>
>>34362341
The LGS part is sadly a no go when finding firearms, no store in town sells surplus, and the only true LGS is Black Rifle which just sells Tacticool ARs, AKs and the occasional .50 bolt action. I'll wait for the swap meet in october and see about some gunshows. Any good literature or websites I should use for checking out and verifying older production rifles?
>>
>>34362396

I've shot enough rifles helping my father sight them in for hunting and the occasional range trip but I wanted to pick myself up something new and that would actually be under my name. I've never really liked the idea of buying an AR (unless I'm making an M16A1 clone) and I really like old bolt rifles so this was just a thought for something I'd like to own.
>>
>>34362439
Ok then, what's your budget, how much do you want to shoot, and are you going to get into reloading?
>>
>>34362396
>implying you arnt also a hipster
>>
>>34362536
My uncle might still have his old reloading supplies he will most likely give me if I ask him for it, he used to reload for his .44 iirc
My budget isn't set in stone seeing as I start my seasonal job on the 19th of july and will probably have a grand or so to spend
I don't know how often I'll shoot yet either.
Thanks for the help so far.

>It may have at one time, but no longer. 'Mum is scrubbed, so perhaps 文 went at the same time.
They don't always have that. Sometimes the 'mum' was cancelled and the 文 was stamped under it. Sometimes they just canceled the 'mum' with the 文.

A matching school used Type 38 is pretty much unheard of. Or really any early Type 38.

I would love to see the pics of it!

I have NEVER implied that. I was implying that anon was one or the other. I am a hipster with a massive history boner.
>>34362643
Seasonal job without much chance to shoot but you may be able to reload. Try a Carcano. They're cheap and ammo can be found fairly easily now (6.5 anyways) but reloading will drop the coat even further. They're light and handy little guns. Or a South American or Turkish Mauser. 7mm and 8mm Mauser ammo can also be found easily though neither will be very cheap. Lastly there are Mosins. They're climbing in price but they're still fairly easy to find and pretty cheap. I have 5 myself and love them.
>>
>>34362955
I'll probably be able to get a mosin that's the most common thing around here for sale and the ammo is cheap at the sporting goods store near by.

Argentine 1909, Chilean 1895 in 7mm (Avoid the .308 conversions if you like having hands), or a Swede M96 are all great choices that hit that price/quality equilibrium pretty dead on.

Like the other anon said, PPU is a solid choice for ammo.

West is great. That said the Upper Best Coast is slowly being corrupted by California. I don't know how much longer we will hold out.

>>34362312

Off-brand (South America, Turkey) Mauser for 200-300
Mosin Nagant for 200-300
SKS for 400-500

Ammo prices vary widely, PPU is well known for making oddball calibers, Tulammo and Wolf make cheap ammo for common chamberings, but you get what you pay for.

Gun shows, Armslist, Gunbroker (probably the most expensive option), Pawn shops.

>>34362326

Probably not the best anymore. Used to be dirt cheap with dirt cheap ammo, no it's just cheap with normal priced ammo. Best first gun IMO would be a .22. That said you CAN get milsurp .22s like the Mossberg 44 as well.

My first was a 10/22, it's a good first gun.

I've got a line on an M1 Garand in the area. Just talked to the owner, we're gonna meet up at the range and he'll bring some ammo so I can shoot both rifles he's got for sale and let me pick for $999. Is there anything I should know in particular about Garands? Any brand more desirable?

Each individual rifle family has it's own book(s), so if you like one in particular then get a book (or two) focused on that family.

>>34362788

They are, they even finally came out with a "compact" model with a 16" barrel.

>>34363397

Don't be afraid, there's plenty of reputable people online.

>>34363547

Depends, is that a manufacturing date or a model? There's models that started production before 1899 but were produced past the cutoff.

>>34364146

I paid about $600 for one with some ammo, chargers, brass and reloading dies.

>>34364548

I've heard that when they were brought back all the oFFICIALLY brought back ones had their bolts pulled and tossed in a pile, then when they were put back together they just grabbed a bolt. If it's matching it's probably a bringback.

This really fucks the sniper models because they were all factory zeroed to the individual rifle.

>>34365106

I THINK that Springfield Armory and Winchester are the only two WW2 manufacturers, International HArvester and H&R made some in the Korean War era. I don't think they are considered more valuable because of their lower numbers though, I'm not sure.

Matching Arisakas exist, but expect to pay a premium.

K31s may be in a bubble, or they may be going up to stay up, but they are definitely going up. Keep in mind that there are plenty of other Swiss straight-pulls that are good as well, that probably shoot better than you do.

As for other options I can't really say without knowing a lot more about what you have already and what you like. If you don't like Mausers then that still leaves a ton of other options, even something as simple as a Mosin.

Carcanos are pretty cheap and easy to get into IIRC, I just paid $245 for mine, though 7.35mm ammo isn't easy to find, 6.5 is easier.

Steyr-Mannlichers are straight pulls that are relatively low profile and so may be affordable.

M1 carbines can be fun shooters.

Swiss straight-pulls, like I mentioned (1896/11 or G/K11s).

Krags have VERY expensive ammo, but a unique magazine system if you're interested in that sort of thing.

Berthiers and Lebels are around for non-36 frog guns.

Can I get a price check on a non matching M24/47 with the Serbian crest still on it?

>non matching M24/47 with the Serbian crest still on it?
If it still has the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes/K. of Jugoslavia crest on it, it's not a /47.

Unless it somehow was refurbed, marked M24/47, and yet didn't get the Commie PFRJ crest.

I'd say $250-300 is fair for a non-matching M24.

I'm leaning more toward $200-250 now. Certainly not what they're asking. If you're really a Serboo tho, you should be looking for a Model 1899, 99/07, or 1910 long rifle, or a 1908 carbine. The K. of SCS crest is not quite the same as Serbia's.

Just picked up the Hakim in this picture a few hours ago for $600. Really nice rifle with a very clean bore. My question is: Does the stock look refinished? My brother says that someone definitely refinished it. Also the blueing on the receiver is basically all gone. Is this normal? Thoughts?
>>
>>34370405
Also, could use some help on the markings of anyone knows what these mean. We managed to get the year it was made but don't know anything else.
>>
>>34370405
Stock definitely looks refinished. The way the edges of the grasping grooves are softened/rounded out look like the result of careless sanding.
>>
>>34370435
Oh, and anytime that dings/gouges/scratches are DARKER than the surface of the stock you know it's been fucked with. Normally they should be breaking through the oxidized surface layer of finish-impregnated wood, revealing the lighter color beneath. That these are dark means that they are old scratches that became filled in with dirt/darkened due to oxidation, but because they are below the surface of the wood they don't get scoured out by the sandpaper and so the gunk and darker wood remain.
>>
>>34370481
So how much would it hurt the value of the rifle? I'm guessing that's why I got it for $600.
>>
>>34370491
I probably would have paid that for it had I been in the market for one

Hot off the MSPaint presses....

Picked up another MLE16, all the metal bits are matching, obviously stock was sanded, repaired, and shortened. Has a Gew98 band on the front - no Waffenamt so I think bubba did it in the 1950's. It is also missing a follower spring. Rifling is in good shape. Set me back $65.

Walther Model 4, all matching. Has a crown N on the frame but slide is Imperial Military proofed. Has a 1916 dated holster with good maker's mark. "Muhlenfeld & co Barmen 1916". Obviously missing the spring cap, also a magazine (gonna cost me $40 for a repro mag). $200.

kar 98 bayonet with frog. $75

It may have been worn off, or even ground off by a unscrupulous dealer (that does seem like a weird spot for wear). Or it may have been an actual unnumbered replacement part. The field armorer's kit did have spare dust covers.

Well, yes and no. I did some looking around at what had been done to the rifle, and I may have an answer. The rifle was made in Danzig in 1917, and stayed in the German arsenal until at least 1935, as it has the updated rear sight, and the stamping on it that shows that it was done then. Apparently, the Nazis gave a bunch of rifles to the fascists in the Spanish Civil war, who cut a lot of the rifles down. They also refinished the guns in a crappy, glossy painted finish, which is what this gun has. The gun has a very good bore, and it has been professionally cut down to around 21.25" of barrel length. The original front sight was placed back on the gun. The receiver and the barrel match, but none of the other serial numbers on the rifle match. There are no import markings on the rifle. I got it for a steal, especially since I just wanted it to shoot it a bunch. So it was bubba'd, but I'm thinking it was by the Spaniards.

Interarms imported a bunch of the cut down Spanish G98s in the early 1960's, and they cut the stocks down. The finish on my stock is even throughout, and the cut down job was done competently. Either way, I bought a good condition, very shootable Mauser for under $200 bucks.

You can get Egyptian FN49s on GB for 600-800. The benefit to buying one from a shop is that you get to examine it before you buy it, you get it right then and there, and you don't have to pay for shipping/transfer. The downside of course is that you may pay sales tax.
That's certainly on the high end of what Egyptians are going for on GB, but if you want one and the benefits of buying in person add enough value for you, go for it, especially if you can jew him down to 725 or 750.

I don't think so. It's hard to tell but I'm not seeing a 98 claw extractor. I think it might be a Turkish 1890 Mauser.

Gotta get your eyes checked, old man. I can see the claw extractor, and the step down on the cocking piece that makes it a 98-or-later Mauser action. Also note the tangent-leaf rear sight and full-length handguard, not found on a Turkish 1890 Mauser.

This one does.

Turk Mauser at a local pawn shop, $300 and they have a 15% off sale ATM.

Also thinking about getting a black powder revolver there since I have neither a revolver, nor a black powder gun.

Jesus Christ I thought the serious bids started around the 24 hour mark?

Turk Mausers are pretty bad and Yugos are readily available at the same price. Unless you specifically want a Turk, avoid.

How's it shoot?

I have a M48 and M24/47 already.

I probably won't buy it, just because there's so many other things that I need more.

Sometimes, sometimes not.

OK, fair point. But the rifle in the picture still has a 98 action. If it's anything Turkish, it has to be a Model 1903.

Tbqhfamalam I think the after is better looking but I'm sure there's a few /k/omandos that'll hunt you down and skin you alive for what you've done.

I like this, is it raw? Or is there BSL on it? Anything at all?

I've been looking into buying one of those spanish 1916 mausers that Navy Arms has. Does anyone know if they're actual milsrurps that they've done work on or just reproductions?
>>
Why is 8mm Mauser so hard to find? All I want is bulk FMJ rounds that will actually fire safely.
>>
>>34375620
It's not. Walmart just doesn't have it. Midway has good sales on it often

New to surp collecting

I've been watching k31s disappearing over the past month, will the tide roll back in eventually?

Maybe. I heard they are likely to get one more shipment from Switzerland
