You sure on handgun? I've read a lot on bush pilots and other Alaskan frontier workers, they mostly agree on a stainless pump shotgun with slugs. Shoot in the air to scare, shoot in the face if not scared. Cheaper and easier to use than a large caliber handgun, yadda yadda.

If you are stuck on a handgun? Go for a big bore single action like a 454 casull. You can still target shoot 45 colt so it won't just sit around it's whole life. Plus 454 hot loads? Maybe you can just catch the bear on fire with the blast.
