There will likely be a .308 interim rifle selected, and stockpiled a few. The availability of quality body armor is more common, and that new AP .308 that goes through plates is a thing. It won't be getting issued to the mil at large, but having something in the logistics network is a good idea.

Need to actually make all soldiers (hell, make just the grunts for now) actually good with their weapons. No point in going .308 if few people can hit an ivan further than 200yds out on a one way range
