I'm a poorfag currently, but I've been wanting a pistol for a while now, and I found a pair of post-war P38s at a local pawn shop. my question to you all is, what are P38's like? They're so damn aesthetic and they feel really ergonomic I'd love to own one, but I'm curious about maintenance, longevity, handling, that sort of thing.
Any P-38 owners willing to enlighten me on what owning this pistol would be like? what could you use it for?
If it's a steel framed p38 and not a P1 longevity will be pretty good with 115 grain Winchester trash box. I wouldn't fire +p of NATO spec shit through it though.
Unlike the p08 they're reliable, German police units used them or derivitave of them up until the late 70s. The thick slide and fairly large grip wouldn't be optimal for cc but you could make it work. Make sure you replace the springs once you buy it, and like the beretta the locking block can fail after thousands of rounds but fortunately parts are available online from cdnn. The trigger on them range from mediocre to really fucking heavy.
>go for it OP they're a fairly modern handgun design

thanks for the info. if I find another steel frame and I'm good financially I'll probably go ahead and pick it up. I have german blood, I've wanted a german weapon for a long time because I just thought it would feel right. Good to know P-38s are solid reliable pistols and not shitty range toys.

Take a Beretta 92, remove seven rounds, and give it that weird double recoil spring. Boom, you have a P38. Really, all a 92FS is is a P38 with a conventional recoil spring, double-stack magazine, and modern controls.
Seriously though, I fucking love mine. I mean, I wouldn't carry it if I didn't. My only complaints are with regards to carry - namely, it's rather thick and heavy for a single-stack 9mm, and it doesn't particularly like JHP's. Some people don't like the European-style heel mag release, but personally I prefer it.
Otherwise, it's an incredibly solidly-built pistol. I've yet to manage to even force a malfunction with FMJ ammo. And once you get past the heavy DA trigger pull, it's really quite nice to shoot. Again, if you have any experience with Berettas, it handles and functions exactly like that.

> what are P38's like?
Imagine the most boring, underwhelming shooting experience with a 9mm handgun you've ever had. Now make the handgun in question have an 8 round capacity despite its heavy size and bulk, along with a mediocre trigger and a fraction of the ergonomic comfort of a Luger.
That's what shooting a P-38 is like. The fact some rube payed $700 for my CYQ Russian-capture is something that will never cease to amuse me.

P1 any different?
>>34353452
Just with an alloy frame
I don't know where he got boring from, he could just be a faggot.
Op they're bulky and they have heavy triggers. Unless you're using this as a defensive weapon (don't), this is in no way a big deal

>I don't know where he got boring from
Ever shot a Luger? Or a Broomhandle?
>>34353452
It's a P-38, except now with a fuckugly frame and half the value.

Precisely why I bought one to retire my grandfather's P.38. My P1 doesn't hold a candle to my P.38 in terms of smoothness, finish or trigger pull but it's not a bad pistol in its own right. Much larger three-dot sights on the P1 but I think I prefer the original blade and notch.
I put some walnut grips on my P1 as they feel much better than the checked two piece plastic grips they came with.
I shot one alongside a c96 and Luger and it was the best shooting of the lot by far. A friend of mine thought so also.

>what could you use it for?
8 warning shots and a free throw
>>34353706
>tilting breech out shooting a fixed barrel
sewer pipe luger?
>>34353587
What a p38 boring to shoot? Is the recoil not exciting enough for you?
Perhaps the sights aren't stylistically interesting to your eye? Should the report sound as though it echoes from a musical instrument? Would that make it more interesting to shoot?
>>34353739
There is much more to accuracy than muh fixed barrel.
>>34353654
P1 grips are such AIDS, the only worse feature for that pistol is the Walther banner logo, followed by the overall finish.
>>34353706
This is a bad post.
>>34353756
It was fucking boring, the trigger wasn't stellar the sights aren't anything neat the action is generic the heel release is faggy the accuracy is mediocre ergonomics are meh it's nowhere near as cool as its predecessors, what fucking else do you fucking want from me you fuck it was fucking -boring-, don't ever fucking talk to me again.
>>34353729
are they really that bad
>>34353795
No he was being sarcastic
>>34353795
in terms of accuracy, yes.
they are 8 fairly reliable warning shots though.
>>34353739
The P.38 uses a pivoting breechblock, not a tilting barrel. There is very little difference in their inherent mechanical accuracy but the P.38's barrel and slide design is a bit looser arrangement than the P.08's barrel and barrel extension in terms of frame to slide fit.

It must be hell to live the rest of your life with the mental scarring from having fired a P38
>>34353828
It was, I'm so glad I sold it. <3
>>34353848
you took some great photos though.
>>34353877
Oddly enough I've never been able to replicate the clarity my phonecam captured back in the fall of '15 and nothing I've done since then has come close.
My P-38s never fail to open up any can I have, and always deliver a nice hiss.
Its was a great handgun for the time. By today's standards the p38 is a little outdated. It's heavy despite only holding 8rds, the double action trigger is horrendously long and heavy, and the gun is covered in sharp edges.

Nice one, Anon.
>>34355141
Please tell me how to do that.
