How did bugs colonize other planets? The movie says that they hurl their spore in to space and when that shit lands a new bug colony starts on that planet. How the fuck do they do that without F.T.L. tech? How do they aim that shit? For that matter how the fuck do the plasma bugs aim their ass plasma without any sort of targeting system? The ships they were firing at would be little more than tiny specks of light in the sky. They can also communicate to each other across planets and presumably across the vast lightyears of space. How did they know that the Federation was going to invade far enough in advance that they could prepare for it?

Face it, the brain bugs are psychic. Hell the movie shows some humans to be psychic. I'm guessing that each one isn't too powerful on it's own, at least not powerful enough to be able to fend of the marines in the movie. But many brain bugs together could maybe nudge an asteroid... or open up a wormhole to help their spore travel to a new planet without waiting 100,000 years.

Now I ain't saying Buenos Aires wasn't an inside job, the movie provides little proof one way or the other. But to say that the bugs aren't at least capable of it is foolish.
>>
>>34357918
The movie is fuckin stupid.
The bugs weren't just dumb animals like termites or ants.
They had full on starships and FTL comms. They also constantly laid eggs and could hatch more warriors at will, the movie acted like humans were gonna outnumber the bugs and win through attrition. In the book humans were outnumbered 10,000 to 1 at best.
Read the book or listen to the audio book, it's far better than the movie.
>>
>>34358425

This exactly. The only thing the movie has in common with the books is the name. I liked the movie till i read the book and was pissed that they removed all the mech suits and cut literally every single piece of plot that wasnt shooting bugs. The book is like 3/4 full of what amounts to military politics and exposition on what its like to be a soldier in that setting. It sounds boring but its interesting as fuck.

Instead we got MURHHHHREEEEENNNNNSSSSS HUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRR *boom*
>>
>>34358425
>>34358443

The director of the movie is quoted as saying he found the book to be "depressing and boring." He wanted to do his own thing while keeping some of the elements from the book.

Starship Troopers (1988) OVA 03: Maria.

At 16:09 there's a scene that is from the perspective of the moon, however there are still stars visible in the shot. Is that a mistake on the animators part or does it have something to do with the story?

stars are visible on the moon, they just aren't on video from the moon because of how you have to set saturation and contrast and stuff to get a decent picture of the surface
>>
>>34366017
It's an exposure thing. Your eyes could make out the stars if you looked for them, but any exposure setting that could potentially show stars would be washed out by the overexposed surface.

Interesting side note: conspiracy theorists will say that we didn't have the technology to go to the moon so it was faked on a sound stage. The reverse is actually true; in 1969 we didn't have the technology to fake hours upon hours of slow motion video.

Because the whole point of the movie is to parody Heinlein's raging two-headed boner for war and military-authoritarianism. Don't get me wrong, I like both the book and the film: the novel was a seminal work in the powered-armour spaz merino genre, but I still think its 1/8th cool power armour sections, and 7/8ths jacking off over militarism. I like the film because its corny and great, and unashamedly rips the piss out of the novel.

That's why I like The Forever War more. Like Starship Troopers it delves heavily into politics, but its a different animal. The two books are totally different sides of the same coin: Troopers exults in the glory of fighting against a bunch of insect commies, whereas The Forever War is intensely anti-war, with the pointlessness of the conflict reflecting Haldeman's experience from Vietnam.
>>
>tfw bought the starship troopers book
>was a really good read
>left it on a train or at uni somewhere
>dun want to spend another $20 and I hate reading E books

>>
>>34366911
No, the director of the movies literally read the first few pages of the novel then stopped and decided to just make a military satire loosely based on star ship troopers. The only thing the film accomplishes is showing he had no idea what the novel was about, or how militaries operate. The satire you see isn't directly against the novel, it's just satire against the military in general.

I might check out that book you mentioned.
>>
>>34366934

Yeah and nuking from orbit a desert bug planet is still better than sending in in armored infantry and guess what? Meteors don't fucking travel faster than light.

>>34366922
Do used book stores not exist in your city?
>>
>>34366993
Did you read the book?
Because the MI exists for specific reasons, and they are clearly outlined.
>>
>>34366934

He read the first few chapters. And even then, its satire sure does cut close to the bone of the namesake source material (soldiers are all idealized recruits hungry for war, Klendathu attack is a shitshow, insinuation that the Buenos Aires meteor is unjustly pinned on the bugs). There's far too much similarity in my opinion to say the film is just a broad parody of militarism and fascism in general, and not of Heinleins work. But I'll agree to disagree.

The Forever War is great just on its battle scenes alone. It has more hard sci-fi elements than Troopers: Time dilation from FTL travel is a big part of the plot, and a lot of effort is put into showing the complexities and pointlessness of fighting in interstellar space with infantry, against an enemy they barely understand. The opening chapters are all about how easy it is to just die from the environment on frozen planets while in training. Check it out.

Missing the point. Read the book, it's got what you're looking for

>>34366993
Because they wanted to terrorise them, to make a point that fighting against them would be pointless.

That's why in the prologue they went to their home planet to target water purification; power and other utilities to spread panic and disease within the population and say ''hey look I've got one hand behind my back, don't fuck with us''

I think I remember them saying the aim was not to kill skinnies; but not to take any chances.

Ultimately the skinnies ended up joining the Federation in the war.
>>
>>34366993
Because they didn't want to exterminate the skinnies, they just wanted to scare them into a beneficial peace deal

Mostly because they wanted their intel on the bugs

“Under our system every voter and officeholder is a man who has demonstrated through voluntary and difficult service that he places the welfare of the group ahead of personal advantage.”
