Well, it takes 6 months to get your CHL in Charlotte because Mecklenburg county drags ass and has to go through all of the medical organizations for records checking, but the CHL eliminates the need for purchase permits as you can use it instead.

You should note that there is next to nowhere to shoot in Mecklenburg county aside from some indoor ranges. Lots of trap shooting too. Long range rifle? Forget it. You'll be driving 4 hours to find somewhere to shoot. Denver Defense is a pretty good indoor range as they have 50 yards for rifles and it's near the border of N and S Carolina.

I live on the outskirts of Mecklenburg county, and I'm just thankful I have some land to shoot rifle on. Otherwise, its a hassle.

Most places down here give you an option for different sauces. I did got to a place 2 months ago that specifically advertised being Maryland BBQ, even Chicken bog. They claimed it won awards. Move to SC (Fort Mill or Rock Hill or wherever you can find a place) commute North. Plenty of people do.

Not much in the way of places to shoot here. There's a tiny pistol range in Newport, and a yuuuge sporting clays range in Fort Mill if you like shotguns.

Gas is cheapest in SC, and it's even cheaper in Rock Hill. Gasoline in Fort Mill is always a few cents higher, and once you cross the NC border it hikes up another $0.20-0.30 per gallon.

Lots of public land and several free public ranges that aren't too much of a drive
land is cheaper
Houses are cheaper

Overall more conservative than NC
Not as many northern transplants (This is generally a huge plus.)


Cons:
Traffic will be a bitch going into/coming out of Charlotte. I-77 is the main artery for everyone who lives just across the border and works in Charlotte. Come in to work early and leave early to beat the traffic if you can. Otherwise I hope you like chilling in traffic.
Your options for food/things to do are more limited in SC, you will have to drive a bit and go to Charlotte if you're the kind of person that likes to be out and about going places and doing things.


NC Pros:
Living in Charlotte is convenient if you work in Charlotte. Apartment living isn't too bad cost wise if you shop around and aren't dead set on living uptown.
Quick/immediate access to a wide-ish variety of restaurants
NC as a whole is Red, just don't expect to run into red-staters in blue enclaves like Charlotte.
Charlotte is a pretty safe city as long as you follow the "don't be in stupid places doing stupid things with stupid people at stupid times" rule. Not as Ghetto/dangerous as Chicago, DC, or Atlanta.

Cons:
Handgun permit system sucks.
Getting your CCW is expensive
(Mandatory CCW class + application fee + fingerprinting + background checks was a little north of $200 when I got mine a couple years ago.)
Yankees. Cary (Containment Area for Relocated Yankees) Charlotte, and a few other places are FULL of relocated liberal yankees who shat up their state and are in the process of turning NC purple/blue. Lots of transplants from NJ and NY.

That's the impression I had from reading through 11, 12 and 18 on the 4473, I'm glad people are having the same interpretation. I work in Charlotte, it's the biggest small town in America. Everything aside from Uptown shuts down at 10 o clock. As long as you stay away from Beattys Ford, it's a very nice, very friendly place. But for real, stay away from Beattys Ford.

To add on to that if you plan on signing up for a CC permit in either state (WHICH YOU FUCKING SHOULD) its honored in both Carolinas and if you have said permit in North Carolina you are exempt from the pistol purchase permit rules, just show them your CCW card.

If you're torn because of either state's nitpicky shit just know once you get your permit to carry it doesnt really matter either way.
