You should be well within range of the foothills and Green Swamp (good luck if you go in there). A good kayak can get you to a thousand innawoods places in NC. The Outer Banks is going to be less gun friendly though. If you're just interested in camping /out/ is probably who you should ask.

I'm about 30 min from there. They have a new public range there too. If you're in the green zone it's a very long drive but if you're around Raleigh it's maybe 2 hours by i-40.

Gaston County here, I just go shoot innawoods behind my Grandmas house. Sheriffs deputy all ways shows up, but County law is 500 ft from the road, and I made a berm like 6 years ago. Last time the dude just waved and drove off.
