Just bought a Ruger AR-556 for $449 free shipping tax and all. Stationed in Rhode Island so I can't pick the thing up until Tuesday, but it's my first AR.

I bought a picatinny raid and a angled fore grip to try out that type of firing style. Thought about a red dot later on but I want to get good at shooting it first. Any protips?

I'm all for buying nice things esp when safety is involved but you'd be better off spending that money on escaping the shit hole. Also that gun is an SBR so you're going to have to let it sit at the gunstore for most likely atleast 3 months before you can take it home, which in your situation sounds not good. "Must have" is only what applies to what you want to do with it. You may just prefer ironsights for whatever reason over using any sort of optic and that's fine. IMO every rifle should have a sling though, so you can sling up and steady your rifle. It'll do fucking wonders for your accuracy.

I bought my first AR a few years ago, back when the AR-556 was new and the market wasn't as flooded as it is now, ended up with mine for 200 bucks more than you paid. I agree with the other anon, grab some ammo and shoot the thing. I'm about 1500 rounds in now and have replaced a few things on my Ruger.

My main complaint with the rifle stock was the plastic clamshell handguard was shit and had no heat shield so after 2 mags that shit was HOT so its definitely good you've got yourself a rail for it just know the gas block front sight is fixed. Otherwise the AR-556 uses a delta ring you just unscrew so it'll be easy to install.

As for mine I've ended up with magpul handguard and buttstock with a magpull VFG that screws right onto the ports of the handguard. Got a sling as well and just replaced the rear sight which was a simple magpul backup sight with a carry handle right onto the top rail because I wanted the dual apertures with both windage and elevation adjustment (and its just more durable of a part).

But yeah, shoot the fuck out of it and you'll find out pretty quickly if you love it or want to change up more of the parts.

There is a lack of a sticky here, so I gotta ask if there is any best cheep prebuilt AR out there. The M&P 15 looks alright, but I was also looking at the Ruger AR-556. Any known problems with either?

I would love to build my own but dont have the tools for 80% and am under 21 so I cant get a stripped lower. Just looking for a cheep HD and starter rifle for now.
