I recently watched a bunch of footage of ISIS and current middle eastern battles but know little about guns. Could someone tell me if this is an MG42 from world war two? How would it have gotten there, do other forces in the battles of Syria and the levant use german weapons?

It does look like an MG-42.
As to how it got there one can only imagine, theese groups hog all the guns they can get.

No I don't that's why I asked. Does it use the same bullets? Was that an mg3 and if so how do these get these guns?

No, the far more attainable 7.62

If so, the Germans gave 40 of them to the Peshmerga, the Iranians produce a copy locally, as does Pakistan. Could be from anywhere really. Its ubiquitous.
