Many machinists love their work and have home shops too. If you love metal it's a worthy option. Enthusiasm makes good machinists. Learn both manual and CNC to be versatile. I suggest taking CAD classes before machining. You can often make good money as a CAD draughtsman and when you already know how to think in CAD machining class will go easier.

Small shops often have to hire and fire because business is cyclic, so if you can do CAD, manual and CNC work you are much more valuable. Repair machining and "need it now" parts production for factories can be quite profitable, and many shops have large manual machines which would be less versatile and insanely expensive if they bought a CNC version. They use CNC for multiple or difficult parts, but it's often much faster (and frees CNC for production work) to make simple parts on a manual machines.

Go to the Practical Machinist forum and read your ass off.

Most people who fill up vo-tech machining classes aren't enthusiasts and are just their for their gibsmedat. Ignore them and be the awesome student. Help clean up and be cool with the instructors. They often influence hiring decisions.

Our local CC (where I was a student and later adjunct in welding and machining) might turn out one "real" machinist or two per class. That's fucking wonderful because there's a machinist shortage in many areas.
