Guns going lost in evidence lockers happens more often than you'd like to believe, anon. Either that, or going completely uncared for. I've heard of several cases where self defense guns were returned with the evidence number dremeled or soldered into the gun. I've also heard of them getting unaccounted for dents, dings, scrapes, and even rusted to shit from neglect. You aren't typically going to get the gun back until the case has made its way through court, and knowing our judiciary system it can be dragged out for fucking years, like what happened with OP.
