These are both new in box import-config SL8s.
Though I would prefer double stack, these existing mags are my preferred length (much like vietnam era 20 rounders). I'd have to ask Tom Bostic about the conversion price as it involves milling out the side of the receiver and reinforcing it with steel.

I wonder what an actual gun for space would look like?
Probably some fancy chromed recoilless rifle.
>>34339493
Fuck it, nobody else is posting, so I'm gonna think aloud while I post pictures.
I guess the key things would be functioning in hostile environments, being lightweight and easily repairable away from new parts.
WW2 Era spacegun related. Light, compact simple, easy to repair with the exception of the spring.
>>34335990
Deagle carry model.

>>34339493

>>34339863
Functioning is hard though.
Temperature range varies a lot in space depening on if you're in direct sun or not. A shiny rifle probably isn't ideal now I think of it because of glare. Maybe make the magazine and lower chromed but the rest should probably be white to minimize heating effects.
I wonder if you could build a rifle out of Invar? Or if you'd need to?
>>34339874
Just for you
>>34339895
Vacuum welding shouldn't be a problem apparently. According to Wikipedia you only need dissimilar surfaces and coating it is easy. You probably also want a mix of NiB and Chrome internals and barrel to deal with heat build up.
And a nice big open trigger guard (pic related) for space gloves.
>>34339922
Caseless or not I'm up in the air about. On one hand, cased is heavy and will float around. Hot Brass dance will not be fun if theres no gravity pulling it out of your shirt. On the other heat is already a problem in space and cases get rid of some of that heat.
Some anon here said a while back that cases remove less than 10%, but fucked if I know if thats reliable.
>>34339952
Have a lot of white spaceguns funnily enough.
I did some googling and the actual push from the recoil is actually really tiny.
Which makes sense due to the difference between a tiny bullet and a big suited space-soldier. Recoilless rifles waste a lot of powder so carrying all that extra weight just to burn it up is pointless.
>>34339895
why teh fuck do you know what Invar is?

>>34339973
You also want something fairly compact because of the tight quarters on space ships. But space suits are armored against debris and tiny barrels are lackluster at armor penetration.
Bullpups might actually have a proper use there. Convenient as they are the spaciest of spacegats.

There won't be such a thing as a spacegun until space combat has become an actual thing. Only real world testing would be able to tell us what the most important factors to consider are when designing one.
Recoil? Noise? Weight? Penetration? etc. What is the order of importance for all these factors and others when designing a gun for space combat. Personally I'd think that penetration would be incredibly important; you wouldn't want your round blowing a hole in the side of the ship if you miss, but you also need something that can get through armour reasonably well. Tough engineering challenges.

It caused problems on the STEN but it also wasn't designed for it. Double stack single feed magazine, a somewhat fragile magazine catch and a sensitivity to feed angle all make the issue worse than it would be otherwise.
Its telling that it only exist in prototype form, and that only a couple other guns use that method though.
>>34341449

>you wouldn't want your round blowing a hole in the side of the ship if you miss
OK TIME FOR SOME SCI-FACTS
normal atmospheric pressure in comparison to vacuum is only something like 12 psi
so if you punch a hole in the side of a spaceship say as big as a .45 cal round then all you will get is a whooshing sound and if you're in a ship that is something as big as a bus inside with its volume of air then you have an hour to patch the hole before you even start to feel a difference (and yes using a finger to plug the hole will work)
and if you're on a bigger ship (like a real spaceship will need to be) then you have even longer
so space guns putting small holes in ships is not that big a deal
so you can think of space battles inside a ship with some parts of the ship looking like swiss cheese and you can see the stars from inside a ship with no windows and guys in these ships shooting at each other and no space suits and the only thing to deal with is the whooshing sounds of air escaping and gunfire
and the fight will be long over by the time you need to fix the holes, and the outer hull of the apollo spacecraft was only as thick as 12 sheets of aluminum foil, so your patches over the holes are not going to be very big

What do you do when your enemies wear body armor then? Just let them kill you?
Bullet holes take a long time to depressurize any moderate volume, you'd be fighting in space suits anyway (in case of decompression and incase whoever controls the atmosphere vents it, or changes the breathing mix to cause hypoxia) and given the leaks, loss of materiel, fire risk etc the owner of the craft would probably just depressurize before combat anyway.
>>34365619
The above goes for you as well. Wrt to Oxygen, if its a pure oxygen environment its at partial pressure and no more a fire risk than a mixed gas atmosphere at full pressure.
Pure O2 is only risky on the landing pad when its at full pressure ala Apollo 1.

Its really is a shame. The aesthetics are cool but the quality terrible. Then again Spaceguns are about aesthetics - the SL8 is a quintessential space gun and is also pretty shit, only cool because of its looks and association with the G-36.

>missing the opportunity to use glocktism
Posting the only 3 guns that have actually been literal Space Guns.
First is the R-23 aircraft cannon, firing weird Glavanized steel cased, telescoped ammunition and flown on the Salyut 3/Almaz 2 space station.
>>34366765
Next is the TP-82, a weird drilling/combination gun intended for survival use also flown by the Soviets and later the Russians. Using 2 40 gauge shotgun barrels and a single 5.45×39mm barrel in a break action design. A stock can be attached to the grip like an old machine pistol, and in this case is actually a sheathed machete.
>>34366773
Lastly is literally a fucking makarov. Because Russians.
Initially it was given to Cosmonauts until it was decided that 9mm was not sufficient given they were landing in the Siberian wilderness. When the custom 40g shells had degraded after the years, the TP-82 was retired and they went back to the Makarov. Interestingly they don't carry it all the time - it remains on the manifest and they usually 'elect' not to carry it. The story, if accurate, is that if they formally removed it, under the agreements they would not be able to re-add it on missions to the ISS.

>russians actually put an autocannon on a space station
As much as I like russian military shit, this was one of the dumbest fucking things they could have done. What the fuck did they gain using an autocannon over a rocket pod of kinetic-kill missiles that wouldn't affect the station's orbit?

>>34335452
What's a futuristic scope? I kinda want to make a space bolt gun.
>>34366868
Off the top of my head, ammunition weight and rounds fired before reloading.
It costs a fair bit to launch, 5 figures per kilo and only recently is it down to 4. Anything the gun is firing at is unlikely to be significantly armored so its likely that its only going to take 1 successful hit to destroy or disable it. If you can carry 250 rounds instead of 5 missiles you can engage 50 times as many targets for the same price.
And you can have a very large belt of hundreds of rounds instead of 30 rockets in a pod meaning more targets between reloading (which either requires a spacewalk or a fancy airlock).
Meanwhile the station the going to outweigh the round by a factor of almost 400,000. The effect of firing on the orbit is going to be very minor. More of a concern was the shaking it caused.
Its also important to remember that it was a essentially an experiment passed off as an emergency measure. That's why it was fixed - it wasn't seriously intended to be used.

But rocket pods are much, much lighter than cannons until you start figuring into the hundreds of rounds. You also can make them out of aluminum or even plastic, made right, and they won't suffer for it like a cannon would. The rockets will end up being somewhat heavier than shells, but you don't have casings, you can save weight cutting off fins because they're not going to do anything in space. You also don't have to worry about heating up. Because that cannon, after firing a few rounds, is going to get hot as fuck, and most of that heat is going to the rest of the station.
And since these are unarmored targets, you're not going to need much. A 15mm rocket with a HEAT warhead is going to destroy most anything manmade you point it at in space and in a lightweight pod you'll still likely get a hundred of them or so.
>>34365619
>>firing a fucking gun inside a pressurized craft filled with oxygen
oxygen doesn't burn by itself without fuel so that's not a huge issue, the bullets might go faster if they were loaded in a 100% oxygen environment but if they were loaded on earth the content inside the bullet will probably stay the same.
Guns in a pressurized craft is still not a great idea.

Another name for them is "captive piston cartridges" It's not the only gun to use them, but the most prominent. It's also a great example of soviet engineering finding.... unique... answers to design problems.
>spaceguns
>60% of the pictures are just plastic assault rifles with nothing particularly interesting
C'mon, where are all the retrofuture, zeerusty guns? Stuff where the whole gun is odd and intentionally futuristic rather than just having a few bits and pieces of furniture on the same basic frame that's been around since the 1940s
