Well, I've finally got the urge to get an AR15. I've never been into rifles but I've always felt that every red blooded American should have one. However, I'm not sure which version Id prefer to have.
Rifle version, 16" bbl
>prevalent, can find factory versions for ~$450
>16" bbl helps with velocity over shorter rifles
>Can have an actual stock, not just 3 "brace" options
>Can't transport it loaded because of old anti poaching laws, must be empty, ammo separate
Pistol version, 11.5-14.5" bbl
>Can be transported while fully loaded as it is classified as a pistol
>Muh CQC
>Short bbl that can be transported between state lines unlike NFA items
>Essentially does the same job, just not as comfy cause "brace" only
>Lower velocity, potentially diabolical muzzle flash and noise
What does /k/ think? What is the shortest bbl length appropriate for .556? Is there a muzzle device that can compensate for the flash/blast of a short bbl .556? Do the benefits of the pistol version outweigh those of the rifle?

Wouldn't you need a tax stamp? Or is there some difference between a SBR and AR pistol that I'm not aware of?

It's arbitrarily complicated.
The difference starts in the receiver.
>Ar15 rifle lower .556
>Ar15 pistol lower .556
You can have any bbl length in on a "pistol" receiver. However, the "pistol" turns into an SBR rifle (which needs an nfa stamp if bbl <16") if you
>install a "rifle sock.
Which means you can only use the "pistol brace" , such as the sig brace or the shockwave, etc. You CAN shoulder the braces now per ATF. There are folder and adjustable versions out there, but most people know only of the sig brace version.
It's fucking retarded.
Adjustable "brace" on an MPX
Same brace for AR15 fully extended
Folding stock adapter with "brace"
This is pretty nice, still considered a "brace."
I'm leaning towards a pistol build for the numerous advantages. The only disadvantage I can see is lack of "stock" options. I could always get another 16+ inch upper and then use a regular stock if I don't like it.

yall plebs

muzzle blast and noise isnt bad, just get an flash hider not a brake, if you shoot an AR indoors youre ears are fucked anyway
i recommend the 16" if youll only get one
if you think youll get another down the road, start with the pistol, then build another upper and use it on the pistol, then get another lower with a real stock, to spread out the cost

Whats its purpose? Specific or jack of all trades?

Jack of all trades I suppose. I don't have any specific use in mind, just something to have and shoot. I'd probably get something larger for longer range specific use.
