I was thinking "Cowboy" guns were guns that people actually bring to Cowboy action matches, not just any lever action or single action revolver.
Also the .45-70 being a better hunting/survivalist weapon would depend on the climate in which you were hunting/surviving.
>>
>>34333089
No. Fuck you. You're a piece of shit whose history extends to the limits of your ADHD memory or the first time your uncle diddled you, whichever is nearest.

Just because you can't appreciate something doesn't mean it's embarrassing. I'm sure you found your parents embarrassing when you were in middle school. The difference between you and the rest of us is that your parents find YOU embarrassing now. When's the last time you called your mom and it wasn't "why are you calling" awkward? Exactly.
>>
>>34334447
Meh. I have a revolver I use for a home defense/pillowgun.
>>
>>34334705
>Also the .45-70 being a better hunting/survivalist weapon would depend on the climate in which you were hunting/surviving.

Of course, but .45-70 is a strong contender in all of them. It is capable of taking any game on Earth, including Polar Bears and the African Big 5, and it is also by far the easiest rifle cartridge of great potency to reload. You can reload it reliably with nothing more than a rubber mallet and one of those $30 Lee kits that do not include a press. It also has a bullet design that lends itself to not being deflected by small branches or light cover. Its only weakness is performance at great distances, but that's a tradeoff I am willing to accept.

Not a surprise unfortunately. It's widely known how bad they have been since they got bought out by the Freedom Group. There have been unsubstantiated rumors that they have improved in quality since 2015, but I think those are literally paid shills who have (unsuccessfully) been trying to sway internet opinion to undo the irreparable damage that has been caused by Remlin's terrible QC.

I hope you don't let this one bad experience dim your view of lever guns. They are awesome when you get one that hasn't been run into the group thanks to investment banks and capital management groups.
>>
>>34335007
I'm not going to let it ruin my opinion of leverguns, but it's unfortunate such an iconic American company is putting out such absolute trash now.

Winchester is fine, but they don't really produce any modern design I'm interested in.

Henry is fine apparently as well, but

>MUH TUBE LOADING

Why can't Marlin just make a gun that works
>>
Since I guess this is now a cowboy gun thread, what's reasonable for a holster and gunbelt? I think I have a set picked out but I'm looking at ~$300 and that's approaching a price point where I might as well just wait and buy another gun.
>>
>>34335042
>why can't Marlin make a gun that works

They had to completely re-tool after being bought by freedom group. You'll still have a few lemons here or there because they basically have to re-do all their designs.

Also, the Henry loading gate phobia is way overplayed imo. Henrys are fantastic for what they are

Would you bring your 12000$ precision rifle hunting? No. Competition guns are justified in the context of competition, nothing else. No one thinks it's a great idea to bring their ultra light expensive competition gun in the bush or in carry situtations because it's intended purpose is competing.
>>
>>34333089
not really. these "cowboy" style guns have found pretty good utility as bush guns and guide guns.
45-70 is well regarded as a handy cartridge in a lever action that alot of people agree is reliable but a little quicker on the followup than your bolt guns.
I saw a 500 magnum 1895 on Hickok's channel a couple of days back that looked like a hell of a bush gun. I'd like to own one but those guys are mighty proud of their work.

Yeah, hate to break it to you, but you'll see more lever actions in the back window of a pickup around here than anything else.

Best all around bush gun there is. My long range guns come out in the winter for coyote & wolves. My 30-06 comes out during early hunting season for my elk/ moose or a couple deer. the rest of the time, I've got a lever action with me. Usually my 30-30, but if the grizzlies are bad, or during early spring it's 45-70.

Out of 8 guns, all but one pump shotgun of mine are automatics, most plastic or aluminum frames. The shotgun does not have wood furniture.

Some people like guns like other people like old muscle cars. I think cowboy style guns are very attractive and modern single action revolvers are some of the toughest most reliable handguns out there. I'd love a Ruger Blackhawk in 44 or maybe 357.

Fedora is when you can't accept that modern guns might be better for a task.
>>
>>34335524
you spelt it correctly the first time brother.
>>
>>34341006
Lever guns are not fully obsolete any more than pump shotguns are obsolete.
>>
>>34334650

Nothing wrong with owning one because you like it but..

>Lever action 45-70

Bolt magnum long action gun would be reliable. If you get around like 300WM you have more power and effective range than 45-70

Pump action shotgun is more reliable and has more versatile loads and potentially more energy in them depending on what you get.

An AR10 is very powerful, you have follow up shots, and may not be as reliable as a lever gun but there's no reason you can't manually cycle it if it gets bad enough

>ruger Blackhawk more reliable than glock

Yeah probably more than anything out there remotely close to its price and abilities. You'll have slower follow up shots though. A 10mm glock like the model 40 would be great for just hiking because it's lighter and has similar ballistics to a 357 magnum only with 15 shots you can dump a lot faster.
>>
>>34341254
You're not looking for range with a lever gun. You're looking for fast follow up shots with something easy to manipulate that fires a fuck huge bullet at brown alert range. Yes my .454 is never going to shoot sub moa at 300 yards. What it will do is put 8 405 gr cast lead loadd at 1350 fps into minute of bear at 15 yards in about 5 seconds. My hand cannon isn't going to dump 20 rounds into a dime at 25 yards in 20 seconds, but it will put 5 350gr jfp at 1200 fps into a moose at 10 yards in 3.

As for the .30-30 that's a fantastic innawoods deer gun when shots are under 200 yards and there's lots of light brush.

Also they're just plain fun as hell to shoot. Very big bangs, make other people at the range stare in awe, and there are some ridiculous hand loads that can be made for them.

I like manual actions.
It only weighs 7lbs, which is nice for a stalking rifle.
It's quite a bit cheaper than an AR10 in either of these calibers.

I wish I could find a 7lbs AR10 in 6.5CM right now for $800, but that doesn't seem like an option.

Well, if you're looking for half moa accuracy you're definitely not using a rifle with a wood stock anon.

If you're looking for a carry piece you probably want something smaller, lighter, faster, and with more capacity than a single action magnum.

If you're looking for a home defense weapon you probably don't want something with only two shots or a manual action.

I did not say anyone in the thread was claiming that a cowboy style gun was better at anything.

There are people, both I've encountered online and who I know personally that will advocate that an older, not necessarily cowboy action, weapon/caliber is as good or often better and worth buying over something modern and well accepted for an application other than fun.

Well, for a durr rifle, it's actually damn hard to beat .30-30 in a lever gun, especially here in Oregon.

>Inexpensive
>Lightweight
>No protrusions
>Accurate enough
>Good enough range (seriously, you try to see a deer in Oregon woods further than 200 yards)
>Good enough accuracy
>Super fast follow up shots

Is an AR-10 technically better? Probably. But with five-round hunting magazines, who gives a shit? Why not go for the more A E S T H E T I C gun?

Those are all good reasons, it sounds like it's great for that role and that you're not the type of person I'm talking about m8. Mostly I'm talking about fudds and fedoras who think aesthetics or age somehow = better function. It's entirely different to use something that you like and works adequately but still realizing you could have got something else that may work better (normally it costs more though). I use a handgun sometimes for squirrel hunting instead of my rifle because it's fun and still works.

Two examples that really got me were an older hunter insisting a 30-30 was inherently more accurate than a 243 and another guy obsessed with his old 45 acp revolvers trying to tell people how great hardball was, to buy a similar revolver for defense, and that automatics, especially 9mm, were shit for a gunfight.

Just for fun, it'll cost more and you wouldn't have as slim of a rifle but savage has 308 bolt rifles

mkay,op, depends on what is meant by "cowboy guns" single action revolvers in service or diminutive calibers, yup, cringe as all hell; double action revolvers still serve a purpose as holdout/backup guns or (on the other end of the scale) as hunting/bear defense weapons. lever guns (unless 45-70 or 444 marlin) are pretty cringe. single/double barrel shotguns are cheap and still used for trap/skeet/hunting, so they aren't cringe UNLESS YOU USE THEM FOR HOME DEFENSE

they aren't bad for home defense, it's just that at this point semis are better. I have a 686 by my bedside, BTW. i was referencing double/single barrel shotguns as bad for self defense.

Natives are subhuman

It's cringe to buy a double barrel for defense, not to use it if it's the best of what you have

There's literally nothing wrong with 30-30.
I bet you're one of those fags who parrots that "7.62x39 is a ballistic twin of 30-30" meme

Why aren't lever action rifles superior to bolt actions? They seem a lot faster and easier to cycle

>jam like a semi-auto .22

Anon, if your semiauto .22 is jamming it means you're not taking care of it. I owned a Marlin Model 60 for years and years, and would regularly put a full brick (500 rounds) through it in one afternoon without a single jam.
Don't buy ultra-shitty pure-lead ammo. Use copper plated.
Clean your fucking gun you cuck.
I said CLEAN YOUR FUCKING GUN.

I put so many rounds through that Marlin that I wore out the barrel rifling. Replaced the firing pin and extractor twice, lifter and disconnector springs, shit, I dunno, a bunch of times, and the C clips a few times.
Take care of your guns and don't feed them shit.
Semiautomatics jam is a meme.
Except Taurus.
Fuck Taurus.

Because they are fun as hell you wanna be seal larping fuccboi.
I like the tactical shit too but cowboy guns are pure entertainment, it's not like people typically pretend to take them all that seriously. Get over yourself
