> 1942 fight in burma
> 1943 gets assigned to a group known as the chindits
> 3 months of hell, before they get orders to fall back to india
> Grandfather bong gets separated from his group
> Starving & without food, he uses his grenades to kill fish
> Grandfather bong gets into a one man firefight with a japanese platoon
> Hearing the gunfire some natives find him & take him back to their village
> Give him food, & send him on his way
> Makes it back to british lines
> Breaks into a restaurant and starts cooking food
> MPs turn up and arrest him on desertion.
> Gets put into penal unit digging foxholes as no one can verify his story, as he's one of the first chindits to arrive back
> Hits an officer with an entrenching tool when my malnourished grandfather bong can't dig as much as the others
> Japanese army is moving in on town
> All the MP's are sent to the front to prevent a breakthrough
> Grandfather bong, imprisoned in a penal unit is promoted and made part of the MPs
> Since he's in no state to fight they put him in charge of the japanese prisoners
> Japanese prisoners are now all police officers, given a bamboo stick and policing the populace so they don't commit sudoku
> Story finally gets verified & is released & sent on 3 months leave (which wasn't a problem as he was a brit born in india)
> Late 1943 Goes on the offensive to kick the japs outta burma
> Fights at the battle of kohima
> fights through burma

Was only told stories about my great uncle Bart. Not very /k/, but war is hell I guess.

>Served as courier of some sort during pacific campaign
>Left as the nicest guy on the planet
>Came back angry and drunk
>Grandma stopped letting my dad and the rest of her kids visit him when he started making his daughters stand on top of the dinner table until they pissed themselves
>Dad told me he was a "sexual deviant" and left it at that.

I had an Uncle that was at the Chosin Reservoir. I showed him my Mosin one time and he started talking about mowing down chinks and the whistling they did to signal an attack. He said that after a while he sort of felt bad for killing so many of them.

>Gramps
>Royal Hungarian Army, WW2
>Despatch rider
>Shot in the leg in Translyvania in 1944 while speeding along
>Fucking rides on and delivers the message
>Has a slight, barely noticeable limp for the rest of his life
>pic related, not him, could have been

He had some stories like this, many of them involve pain and a motorcycle. He loved motorcycles (he had a beautiful vintage Indian which we had to sell after he died) and tolerated pain well. He didn't tolerate commies though and tolerated stupid people even less. When my father was a kid he slingshotted and broke one of the windows of a particularly dumb neighbour whom Gramps particularly despised for the unforgiveable sin of being stupid. Gradma offered the furious retard monetary compensation for the broken glass, Gramps berated my dad for not breaking his other windows as well. Anyway, more Gramps stories.

>1949
>Rural Hungary, Somogy county
>Gramps wants to cross a railway crossing with his motorbike
>Drunk policeman shows up and makes the mistake of starting shit with Gramps
>Exchange of impolite words commences
>Policeman makes an attempt at stabbing Gramps with a bayonet (cops carrying rifles were not uncommon back then in old timey Eastern Europe)
>Gramps punches him unconscious
>Official investigation
>1949 was the time of one of the shittiest dictatorships in Hungarian history and punching a policeman was not a safe thing when a joke or an unlicensed pig slaughter could get you in jail
>Gramps gets away with it, because it is still obvious that the cop was at fault for being drunk while in service and harassing and innocent civilian

I could go on.

>So does owning a gun
>Grandfather and a few others are sitting in some bar, discussing what they can do
>It starts out as drunk bravado but gradually turns more serious

>Grandfather gets handed a rifle
>The mood starts to get more and more violent
>Suddenly, some stupid fuck discharges a rifle into the ceiling
>The entire bar is silent within seconds
>Pretty much everyone realises that they're sitting together fawning over maps with German positions, with guns spread out throughout the bar
>People have been imprisoned, questioned by the Gestapo, shot and buried in the dunes for less
>Every patron of the bar books it as fast as possible, and the maps and guns disappear back to where they came from
>Grandfather and someone else immediately go upstairs to see where the bullet went
>On the second floor, there's two people sitting at a small table, playing a card game

>Finally, Comrade Important Party Member grants Gramps an audience.
>Comrade Cunt bluntly explains to Gramps that his treachery is not forgotten, he should be happy to have gotten away with it, they know about that revolutionary committee and all that...
>Gramps explains that it is true, but there is a difference: he was ELECTED to be the head of that committee. By the PEOPLE. Instead of just being put there from above like Comrade Cunt.

More Gramps.

>Mandatory Russian classes in schools
>Dad is a good student, but sucks at Russian
>Gramps constantly pushes my Dad to study harder and improve his grades as he detests bad grades like he detests stupidity

I should mention that Gramps was a forestry ENGINEER and his grumpy and mean exterior hid a sophisticated and literate interior with a love for good books. His little library is still around, he had a taste for good war literature.

>Gramps pushes Dad so hard that Grandma almost cries, begging him to go easier on Dad
>But at the same time Gramps hates the fact that a Hungarian lad has to learn fucking Russian.
>The Russian teacher of the school was also the local head of the Kommunista Ifjúsági Szövetség, the communist youth organization with whom it was wise to get along well with, let's call said teacher Comrade Communist Cocksucking Ponce.
>CCCP already dislikes my Dad.
>Gramps comes to Dad's high school to visit CCCP and give him a piece of his mind for being hard ony my Dad (only he was allowed to do that).
>Fierce argument happens
>WHY ON EARTH DOES A HUNGARIAN HAVE TO LEARN RUSSIAN IN HUNGARY, or at least something along these lines
>CCCP begins being even harsher on my Dad, writes on his report paper that the Kommunista Ifjúsági Szövetség does NOT recommend Dad's admittance to university.
>Unfortunately for CCCP, Dad was otherwise a good student, he aced his entrance exam and they told him that they will be happy to see him next semester, the mathematics department awaits him, welcome aboard.
>Dad's love for mathematics persists to this day.

Also, Gramps almost became the proud owner of some type of a late 50's-early 60's American car, although I don't know the exact type. Some of his friends emigrated in 1956 and pooled some money together. Alas, we couldn't afford the customs for the car. Still, I like to imagine Gramps driving his Cadillac or whatever on the dusty roads of 1960's Southwestern Hungary.

Showed my grandfather my Mosin and he similarly opened up. Said he never had a problem with "the Russkies" during the cold war because they had lost millions in WWII while we just sent equipment. Added that he was "a hundred percent certain" my rifle had been used against the Nazis because the Russians had thrown in everything they had and even shared rifles between groups of men because they didn't have enough to go around.

Most of them are shorter and less interesting. Like how when Gramps had a toothache and just asked a friend of his to grab the toolbox and fucking pull his tooth out with a plier. Or the magical world of boxing (both Gramps and Dad loved boxing) in Old Hungary.

>Heavyweight match
>The two boxers know each other and don't really want to hurt each other, they don't put up a match as interesting as most of the audience wants it to be
>Drunk voice from the audience
>DO FUCKING SOMETHING ALREADY, DON'T MAKE ME COME OVER THERE

Silly little stories like this.

While on topic of war stories though, Dad was the black sheep of the battalion during his time in the Hungarian People's Army. Mandatory military service, originally it was three years, later to be reduced to two and one year during my Dad's time.

>Be Dad
>Heavy machine gunner
>Dad is tall like a lot of others in the family, be machine gunner because big guys are assigned big guns
>Dad hates it, the heavy machine gun is a lot of work to properly maintain, fucking RPG guys get done in a matter of minutes
>One of Dad's idiot squadmates who should have been thrown into a meat grinder after birth for being such a turboretard of galactic proportions doesn't maintain his machine gun properly and by the will of the Gods of Military Fuckedupery this escapes the attention of his superiors
>Gunnery practice
>Moron pulls the trigger
>Trigger is stuck
>Moron stands up to report that his weapon malfunctions
>Machine gun starts firing
>Everyone hits the deck
>Machine gun keeps firing until the ammo belt is depleted, spraying the entire range
>The Gods of Military Fuckedupery willed that day that nobody got injured
>They open moron's machine gun
>Rust falls out

Dad says, these were the longest seconds of his life.

Also, Dad and one of his friends ate most the battalion's whole sour cream supply one time. Pic related, sour cream.

There is a fair number of stories about him and his superiors hating each other.

>Tank's gun slowly turns towards manlet because the turret servos need to be properly checked

Dad hated his time in the army.

>Catches nasty pneumonia.
>Has to report every month to the infirmary for a medical check-up
>Such a check-up also means laying there for a few days
>This also means that he doesn't have to do anything
>Sgt. Turbomanlet (I don't recall if he was the same one or a different one or whether he was a sargeant, let's call him that) thinks Dad is slacking
>Gives Dad hard time over this, subtly putting pressure on him
>Dad is basically forced not to show up for one of his monthly check-ups.

Sgt. Turbomanlet fucked up big time with this. You see friends, there was one group in the People's Army of Hungary that nobody messed with. One group that everyone of every rank feared and respected. Whose authority and will were not defied lightly and without consequences and Dad got along well with this group.

The army doctors.

And Sgt. Turbomanlet successfully managed to draw their ire.

>Dad reports for his monthly check-up.
>'Private Anon's Father, you weren't here last month.'
>'Sgt. Turbomanlet said I'm a slacker and all that, I didn't want to anger him', Dad explains the whole story.
>'I see, I think we understand the situation.'

>Later that day the entire battalion is gathered and red-faced Sgt. Turbomanlet delivers a massive, groveling apology to Dad in front of everyone to see.

Later Dad was ordered to Budapest for a check-up at the central army hospital.
>Pvt Anon's Father, that's quite a story... How much time do you have left in service?
>One month, doctor.
>I see. I'll tell you what. We'll demobilize and discharge you.
>Dad was sent back to the base with a notification that he is to be released from service in three days.
>Of course, Sgt. Turbomanlet and his other superiors waited until the three days were over to keep him around as long as possible.

Some more Gramps.

The Hungarian People's Army was an interesting thing. Lots of very smart and very stupid people locked together, like some kind of a vast experiment.

Gramps worked in the forestry where War Secretary Lajos Czinege used to hunt. Hunting was a popular pastime among high ranking commies. Czinege was quite possibly the biggest, stupidest and at the same time, most vengeful and ruthless asshole ever to be in command of Hungary's military. He wasn't even fit for peeling potatoes, but he had connections and friends in Moscow so they couldn't get rid of him. Fucker used to hide in a farm during WW2 to avoid frontline service. He got in contact with the communists though, volunteered for service in 1946 and so began his stellar career in the military by brown-nosing his way upwards through the political branch of the army. He used to boast that it was him who invited the Soviets in during the 1956 revolution.

Other, better men did the actual work, which is why the People's Army of Hungary could function as a decent, even good army.

Anyway, Gramps. He was only a witness of the following:

>working at the forestry
>Czinege and his entourage shows up
>lots of local party dignitaries and their immediate family are also present
>Czinege is drunk as fuck and cares even less of what people think of him than he normally does
>Gorgeous wife of a local dignitary, Czinege spots her and roars like the Magyar warlords of old
>'THAT... ...WOMAN OVER THERE. SEE HER? I'M. GOING TO. FUCK. HER.'
>'Comrade War Secretary, you can't fuck her, she's the wife of [important party dignitary]
>'IDONNCARE, IMMA FUCK HER ANYWAY. DO YOU UNDERSTAND.'
>'This is impossible Comr...'
>'SHUDDUP, I'M... I'M GOING TO FUCK H...HER.'

His aides solved the problem by taking Czinege for a drive. They knew that he'll fall asleep and forget the whole deal.

If there would have been an armed conflict between the Warsaw Pact and NATO, I'm sure that removing this guy would have been swift.

This reminds me of a guy Dad (Hungarian Gramps anon here) told me about.

Dad went on to become a teacher, he taught mathematics and physics various schools, one of these was a particularly shitty school with some rather rough students. There was a very old, retired history teacher there who still used to teach even though he was in his fucking early 90's, he was Hungary's oldest teacher at the time. His age didn't really stop him, some old folk remain quite active. Now, this guy managed to keep an iron discipline among the students. Nobody talked back to him or if they did, they regretted it. Students weren't allowed to enter the classroom until he was in, they were to wait outside. Fragile old man, but his natural dominance reduced the undisciplined kids to obedient pups.

The old timer came back alive from Voronezh in 1943.

My great uncle Ted was stationed on the USS Bunker Hill. He was in the kitchen with his friends one day when a torpedo hit the other end of the ship and the alarms went off. He went to get his weapons and head to the deck. As he was doing this, a kamikazi hit close by. He decided he had no time, and his only option was to man one of the anti aircraft guns outside. 40 cal I think? as he opened the hatch to the deck, he saw one of his shipmates severed head literally right in front of him. He knew the guy well from what I understand. He got on the gun and shot at incoming kamikazis. I do not recall how many planes he shot down. He said it was such an adrenaline rush - he was just standing there screaming and shooting while the entire ship was under attack and in a panic. A kamikazi hit near him and he was forced to jump ship, along with some other guys. They had life jackets, and were rescued later.

My uncle Frank was in Vietnam and was awarded three Purple Hearts and one Silver star, but I'm not sure how he got them

I'm pretty bummed my grandfather died before I was old enough to really understand anything and ask him story's about the wars because going through his stuff he Had a ton of enemy gear, pistols, Rifles, ss knives and Helmets. Sadly he never really talked to my father about it either so I can't even get second hand into really now I just keep all his stuff in move shape and won't sell it out of respect for him.

Grandpa from mothers side missed WWII by a couple of years but his older brother, my great uncle, was in Europe as an Engineer. Every picnic as a kid I remember he would start drinking heavily and would eventually lead to the same story.

>great uncle Joe and his company are somewhere in France, never heard him say exactly where
>nightly patrols are sent out
>it's Joe's turn to go but he gets a case of the shits from something he ate
>his closest buddy says he'll take his place on the patrol so Joe isn't shitting all over the French countryside
>at some point the patrol makes contact with a German patrol and a quick firefight ensues
>great uncle Joe's buddy is killed instantly
>by this point of the story drunk great uncle Joe is usually crying saying it should have been him
>never got over it and came back with a drinking problem obviously

My grandfather from my dad's side was in Europe as well driving around in pic related. He passed away before i was born so i don't have many stories about him except these two:

>was stationed at the bridge in Remagen in his half track as part of the force tasked with holding it as it was the only route they had at the time into Germany

>after the war he was a guard at a POW camp somewhere in Germany, my father and uncles are not sure where
>while there the prisoners used to make things to trade with the guards for cigarettes and such
>one prisoner made my grandfather a wood cigar style box that he brought home with him
>my uncle gave it to me years back because he knew i was into WWII history, still have it to this day!

Don't blame him anon. He spent a portion of his life getting close to people only to see them die. Don't be mad that he doesn't like getting close to people / seeing others get to be happy and be close to each other (maybe he is jealous). Additionally, don't fault him for not wanting to see someone else he loved dead and get put in the ground. He's seen enough of that without proper funerals.

Go talk to the miserable bastard.

My grandpa (RIP) never really talked about his war experiences, I think, but I guess I'll bump the thread.
We have a stack of postcards from the front, when I get the time to learn Sütterlin I'll post anything interesting (if anybody is interested)

>be 17
>it's 1939, so off to the Wehrmacht with you!
>Field trip in Poland, as a blacksmith's apprentice before the war, 2nd line duties (as far as I know)
>Ostfront the entire war
>Later get pressed into frontline duty
>Shot in leg (bullet is one of our "family heirlooms")
>captured and sent to Ukrainian Gulag (I think in 45)
>released pretty soon
>limp on foot most of the way back home
>home is now part of Poland
>ohfuck.webm
>go to the west and marry widowed grandma

Other grandpa had a massive case of PTSD from his experiences and no one in the family talks about him (left before Dad was born)

>let out effimenate yell due to adrenalin
>solder turns around with time enough to shoot but freezes
>not sure why he froze. Maybe he was surprised to see a black woman on the front lines of the Wermacht fighting

I have a non-family story from Vietnam that I think you would like
>In Vietnam
>on patrol
>bump into a large group of NVA
>too big to handle with a small patrol
>call in for fire support hoping to scare them off
>radio in
>response from some bunch of letters and numbers

>couple seconds later a whole acre of land becomes airborne
>radio cracks on
>"this is BB64 whats the status of the enemy"
>Sargent to the radio man
>"what the fuck is BB64!?"

And that is how an acquaintance found out about the pure firepower that is the New Jersey and her main guns.

He also said when walking through what remained of the blast zone, they would occasionally come across a gooey and when they would lift their foot it would be red. They assumed that was the remains of some poor sod.

Grandpa had a sizeable estate in the 1940's in south eastern poland where I still live though not in the exact same place.

He got called to war in 1939 and was the dude with a telephone spool on his back. They lost a battle in central poland and surrendered and gramps was taken to a nazi stalag. The security wasn't very impressive and he just walked out one day and walked 500km back home. Nobody gave a single fuck somehow.

Then later on a wehrmacht AA battery camped on his ground and he had a few officers living in his home, he hated them but always said how when the germans came they dug orderly latrines, didn't fuck his shit up and the officers paid had him bill them for every single meal or anything they used at the house. He was honestly impressed with this because in 1944 the russians were prosecuting their westward campaign and they in turn took to living on his lands.

They were permanently drunk, shat fucking everywhere you can imagine, grandma was locked in the attic behind a metal-reinforced trap door and they sold him a Bofors 37mm anti-aircraft gun at gunpoint (its still there rusted beneath a bale of hale in the barn, gotta take pics sometimes) so they could buy cheap ass moonshine. The thieving got so bad one russian lieutenant had to publicly execute an asshole private in front of my grandpas house to keep some semblance of order. Nothing of value remained afterwards.

After the war the communists were hanging everyone who was caught with a gun he didn't give back so grandpa had to sink a bundle of nuggets, SVT's and TT pistols in a nearby river where presumably they rust to this day.

Good man, anon. Never, ever fucking give up family history to outsiders.
>>
>>34333987

Also he told me how they were at some relatives house and were having a good old slav party when Opels full of SD or some shit like that descended and demanded a guy who was with the AK resistance turn himself in or else they'd start shooting random people.

The dude decided to take his chances and took off running from within the crowd and the officer in charge just took a Kar 98 from a soldier and took half the guy's skull from like a hundred meters away. Then they left. Everybody kinda felt cold and not wanting to fuck with these people although the resistance later buried my grandpa up to his neck in the ground and left him in the forest because he hid his food from them or else the family would starve. He was yelling his face off for like a full day before some old hag picking mushrooms randomly found him the next day.

All in all from his stories the nazis were mostly civil although they shot all the jews in a nearby canyon in 1940 which everyone saw and knew about.

They also dug a fuckload of tunnels and factories in the hills all around the place, some of those are still undiscovered but the nazis flooded it all in 1945 before they fucked off, there's one railway tunnel where Hitler and Mussolini met in 1943, people used to grow champignons in it before they turned it into a museum in the nineties.

All over the place a metric fuckload of unexploded ordnance was left and it wasn't uncommon to see people without an arm and leg because locals kept picking them up and it was relatively common to use old artillery shells and grenades for fishing which didn't end well some times. As a kid I found a bunch of 23mm Shturmovik cannon shell around.

I don't have that many funny stories (or stories at all) from my serving relatives, since most didn't live to tell the tale.

Mother's side

great uncle #1 (big picture in the middle, early picture of him)
>inna Wehrmacht
>became an officer in an Anti-tank unit
>France, North Africa & Eastern Front
>wounded several times, Iron Cross 2nd class, German-Italian Africa Campaign Medal
>died in '42 near Lake Ladoga, when his dugout got caved in by an arty shell

great uncle #2 (lower middle picture)
>be tank crew
>killed in the East by shrapnel as he stood in the hatch of his tank

Grandpa
>conscripted as airforce helper at age 16 in the late war (44-45 I think)
>deployed in the west, but saw no combat
>captured by the Allies, got tuberculosis and nearly died
>released early and walked hundreds of KM home on foot
>comes home to find out he's now a complete orphan
>family committed sudoku out fear, because Ivan
>rebuilds the looted family business (photography store)
>was a happy go lucky grandpa up until he passed away a couple of years ago
The Photography store is still in family hands. 4th generation now.

Fathers side

Every male that served in WW2 found their end on eastern soil.

Dad:
>conscript inna NVA
>standing guard at night during field exercise
>officer tells him to wake up the men, they're moving out
>dad puts AK into fun mode & magdumps the 30 blanks
>reports to officer: Camp awoken as ordered, Sir!
>gets chewed out, but nothing else happens

>still conscript
>radio truck driver
>basically drive to point x & let the comm guys do their thing
>comm guys made him some headphones so he could also listen to western radio (he loves Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin etc.)
>sometimes he and the comm guys would troll west german radio stations and broadcast their own shit

My great-grandfather fought in the romanian army in the eastern front in WW2, on the axis side.

>gets shot in the leg
>gets to a hospital
>no anesthesia in the place
>shits on the doctor from the pain of the bullet being removed
I'm talking a big spray of feces.
That's the only war story in my family. He fell in love with a blonde nurse, and later in life when he was senile he'd dissapear from the village some times, to get to the train station in the city and try to get a train to Poland to meet his blonde waifu. My grandmother (living in the city) had to go to the station and take him back to the village.
>>
I have a Dutch great grandfather who was in the resistance and a communist like a lot resistance members of the time. He got caught with 12 other men, he was the only one of those who survived the camps. I still have some of his letter to his wife and a German bajonet he used to protect himself in the trip back home.
I also have a German great grandfather. He served as a combat medic in the army on the easternfront. Apparently he was a Stalingrad but im not sure (my grandmother told me this, she I hardly a military historian). He sometimes woke up screaming in the middle of the night about Russians.
Not super exciting I know, but its what I've got.

Grandad on my dad's side was a railway official and conned the shit out of Nazis traveling through sweden to norway. He was one of the few guys at the railroad who spoke german and would often go up to soldiers and ask to see their tickets, study the ticket for a while and spout some bullshit about the ticket lacking a stamp and not being valid.

Having a non-valid ticket would of course mean they got thrown off the train, which would in turn mean they got marked down as deserters. Grandad would offer to "fix" their tickets for smokes, booze or chocolate. A pack of smokes or a bottle of booze is a small price to pay to not get shot jah, Fritz?

Grandad on mom's side helped train norwegian "mountain police", which everyone knew was hush-hush speak for resistance men, saboteurs and commandos. The norwegians would transfer over to sweden, stay for a few months doing stuff like marksmanship training, telemark skiing, ski jumping and english, swedish and german language training then ski over the mountains back to norway.
He also helped smuggle wanted finns over to sweden just to troll the shit out of russian/germans/whoever held finland at the moment.

He told me a story once about walking up on a (dead) gook who had taken a mortar to the head and the round was still live, sticking out the top of his skull

I can only agree with you to a point. See the part about him being a total asshole BEFORE Vietnam as well. He made my dad's life a living hell growing up. Also, I can't recall ever having met him, and I'm 32 (probably met him when I was 5 or some shit and don't recall); he's never expressed any interest in the fact that I exist. I find it hard to consider bothering. It's not even a spite thing; I just can't imagine the point.

There are 37mm ones but they are rare, the Bofors factory would build in just about any caliber you wanted at one point or another.
I once was able to visit the Bofors museum while they were taking inventory of their non public pieces, there was a lot of unusual test versions of auto cannons for export anywhere from 20 to 45mm as well as experimental versions of their 20-57mm guns.

The Soviet Union tried some of these guns and also constructed a number of their own versions in 25-45mm.
While it is unlikely that one of these prototype guns were actually used in the war it is not impossible.

More likely is

Which is a scaled up version of a Bofors 25mm

Great Grandfather on my mother's side:

RCAF electrical engineer. 1940 - 45.

He was an engineer in name, but often that involved having to clean out bits and pieces of men from the Lancasters. Told stories of the air crews afterwards just fucking shook to pieces. The smallest noises would send some into a panic. Stable and cool in the air, but wrecks when they were safe.

Great Grandfather on my father's side:

15 years in the Reichwehr/Wehrmacht 1930 - 1945

He saw a lot of shit, marched through Poland, the Low countries, France and then the Eastern Front until the end of the war. Rotated out, but always ended up back there.

Last months of the war, he was made a company commander and assigned to Walther Wenck's 12th Army and helped break through the Halbe Pocket. Got trapped in it for four days and lost half his company. Ordered his troops to shoot at Civilian SS men hanging male children for desertion after regular Heer uits sent the children that were rotated into their units off with German families to stay out of the fighting. Eventually after three attempts of smashing against the Soviet encirclement, he ended up breaking out and leading a few hundred civilians west to the Americans.

After the war he went back home to Hamburg, found out his family was dead, so he migrated to Canada and started a second family.

Grandfather, who married my Grandmother on my Mom's side

Danish child who went through the occupation. He was a little scoundrel who the Germans took a shining to. He started feeling some empathy to the common German soldier eventually.

He was the last one with real war experience left in the family, but he has dementia now. sucks.

My grandpa and his buddies stole a jeep from the Marines on Iwo Jima, painted it haze grey, stenciled their ship's name on it and kept it on their landing ship. Their CO would drive it around when they were in port. Until someone was auditing their onboard supply T.O. and tried to confiscate the jeep. The captain and this Quartermaster argued back and forth for close to 2 hours. Essentially just saying "It's not on the T.O. so you can't have it. It's not your jeep" "Well is it YOUR jeep?" "No, it's not my jeep" "Well then what's the problem?" before the captain gets fed up with the argument, has the Boatswains open the welldeck and lower the ramp, then he idled the jeep off the ramp and into the Pacific forever.

My good friend/recently deceased relative who fought in WWII served as a medical orderly in a U.S. Army field hospital attached to the Nationalist Chinese Army. I asked him about close calls or combat action he may have seen. He was like: yeah, this one time we snuck down into the front line trenches during a battle to get a look around and ohh, that was such a horrible mistake, we could have gotten killed. Like 70 years later he was lamenting it like it was the worst mistake he ever made in life. He also talked about seeing horribly mutilated Japanese corpses after they took some city following a siege and how the Chinese peasants would "sell their children for a bag of rice". For /k/ info, he had a Springfield M-1903 as his issue weapon for the duration of the war and I don't think ever fired it at the enemy.
>>
One of my more distant relatives was a AAF-USAF officer from WWII through Vietnam. He was leading a group of fighter bombers on an attack run over N.Vietnam to destroy a bridge and got shot down and then somehow bailed out over China. The Chinese then bragged on radio that they had captured him giving his rank and serial number though it is unclear whether or not he was even alive at that point. That's where the trail ends. He is sort of a poster boy for those MIA flags you used to see flown.

Grandad's Uncle was a sailor during both world wars as he started his career at 14 by lying about his age. The family legends say he sailed under neutral flag throughout the wars but took on both german and allies merchant raiders during both world wars. He survived getting the ship torpedoed out from under him twice and had a lot of close encounters with prize crews trying to board the ships he was on.

After WWII he took a bullet to the hip from a drunk policeman that ended his sailor career. Instead he ended up doing oddjobs around town like being a stoker for the local bathhouse and schools, fixing cars and some minor gusmithing jobs

Genetic grandpap was bombadier. Got shot down by the krauts. Gandmama remarried fella she met working in munitions factory who was sick ass race-car driver before they invented safety. I am proud of both the genetic grandfather I never met but was a hero anyway and the grandfather I grew up with who was a hero to me.

Also have an uncle who was an artillery man in Vietnam. Never told anyone about his experiences but when I was a little kid I once asked him why he had all those old little cuts on his face and I remember what he said to me "I had an up-close theological discussion with a viet-cong"
He has a box of medals I'd really like to see someday but he doesn't want anyone to see them. Supposedly there is a bronze star in there but I don't know.

Both of my grandfathers were in Europe with the US Army during WWII, but I know little about their service, because I never really knew either of them (dad's dad died in the '60s and mom's when I was 2 or 3) and neither talked much about the war.

>Be dad's dad
>His dad was a Jewish mobster in Chicago in the '20s and then moved to Cleveland and went clean, and opened a chain of clothing stores
>Grandpa went to school for accounting
>Joined the Army when WWII broke out, became a Captain in the Quartermaster corps.
>No clue what he did during the war, but he processed captured equipment after the war ended.
>Brought back a bunch of loot, including 5 captured Nazi pistols that my grandmother sadly sold after his death.

Most of what I know about my maternal grandfather comes from unit research and from a couple of little diary things with sparse entries that he left behind. Interestingly one of them is written in a captured Nazi day planner, which I need to take pics of some time.

>Be my mom's dad
>Family is from South Tyrol, everything is fucked after WWI so they come to the US and move to a coal town in PA
>Grandpa is the first member of the family born in the US
>Gets married and has his first kid just before WWII, and then joins up or gets drafted, not sure.
>Becomes engineer in the Army - not a combat engineer, but part of a unit that builds airfields and stuff
>Lands at Utah a few weeks after D-Day
>Gets promoted to CPL or SGT, not sure, and then gets busted back down to PFC for fighting with somebody or other.
>Gets TDY'd to the Army group that's at the Battle of the Bulge
>Was close enough to see some kind of combat, at bare minimum was shelled pretty regularly. (A diary note says "shelling especially heavy today" or something like that.)
>Gets sick and is sent back for treatment and misses the really bad parts of the BotB.
>Becomes a cop after the war.
>Brought back the iron cross and medal in the pic, no idea how he got them.
>>
>>34329608
>great grandfather had a brother
>both went into the army in ww2
>great grandfather volunteered
>his brother stole a police car and joined to avoid jail time
>great grandfather got a bronze star and a purple heart for bravery
>his brother looted german medals and sold them to GI'S
>great grandfather got promoted to staff sergeant during the war
>his brother bribed a colonel to promote him with an authentic SS china plate set and 2 lugers
>great grandfather spent the war fighting in some of the fiercest battles of the war
>his brother spent the better part of the war having sex with French women and mailing guns and medals home for GI's

Both rather enjoyed the war. When they got home, they bought some land and raised cattle together. My great grandfather got the loan from the bank with his rank and medals he earned, but his brother got the cattle from selling shit he stole from the nazis.

Part 1
>grandfather on father's side gets drafted on 1930, gets discharged in 1934 and goes working as a bricklayer/plasterer
>WW2 begins, in 1940 he gets recalled.
>ends up as a sergeant at Stalingrad, gets wounded in the russian assault (shrapnel to the chest) and gets put on a plane.
>the plane gets diverted to Odessa, the wounded are thrown out and the plane gets filed with sheep. Yea, sheep - some general really wanted his looted angora sheep to arrive safe and sound.
>he and the other wounded get put on a train, almost all die on route to the hospital in Iasi. He barely gets away with a nasty lung infection and partial paralisys
>one year later he's deemed well enough for rear echelon duty, get's put as machine gunner on a truck
>winter of 1943, during the Nipru offensive, his truck gets hit by an Il-2, he gets blown out the hell away, ends up with nasty burns and broken feet, loses conscience and is left for dead by whatever was left of his comrades.
>wakes up in a russian POW camp that barely could be considered a hospital; after a 2 week ordeal gets transferred to an Odessa field hospital, stays there for a month
>in spring 1944, with the restart of the offensive, all the wounded prisoners are to be shipped towards Siberia so he gets put in a truck. Just outside Odessa his truck hits a mine or whatever, he again gets thrown out, loses conscience and is left for dead, by the russians this time.
> wakes up by night, in a field, surrounded by dead - probaly they thought he was dead and they have put him with the other corpses to be buried. He's almost naked and covered in bloody bandages, can't walk that well so he stumbles himself out of there.
>finds out the corpse of a russian officer, takes out his almost intact uniform and slowly walks away. Later founds a destroyed supply truck with still some food in it and spends the next few days hiding in it.
>>
Part 2
>once he gathers enough strength he gets out and starts walking towards the front line in the hope of getting back. To his surprise notices that no russian ever talks to him, if they see him they turn their eyes and ignore him.
>he reaches the Nistru river and sees the bridge he hoped to cross destroyed. Desperate, he tries swimming, but he's too weak so he barely gets out of the river on the same shore soaking wet.
>he takes of his uniform and tries to dry it a bit. With only his pants on he's gesticulating in anger and somehow a truck stops - the russians in it invite them to join in (he later thought that his gesticulating has been interpreted by those guys as instructions to stop, they didn't dared to speak to him because he then put on the rest of his uniform and they simply shut up when they recognized it). He knows just 3 words in russian so he just climbs on the platform and slaps the top of the cabin yelling his first russian word , Davai.
>they carry him across the river and a few kilometres and when he sees in the distance troops he knows that he has to go back or he'll be found out so he slaps the cabin one more time and yells his second word, Stoi. He gets down and says his third, Spasiba, and moves out before they have a chance to reply.
>for the next 3 days he crawls thru the wheat fields towards the front line, waits for the night and finally reaches the romanian front units. There he just barely survives being executed on the spot as a russian recon soldier, gets arrested and sent back home to Bucharest.
>>
Part 3
>there no one believes his story, the uniform turns out to be an NKVD one so he's labelled a traitor because in that time and place in Odessa region the russians were creating a division out of POW's to fight on their side. He spends 2 months being interrogated and finally is put together with other communist agents and scheduled to be trialled for treason and executed.
>one week before that happens Romania changes allegiance and he gets transformed from a traitor to an commie hero.
>still physically too weak and damaged he gets sent to the rear the army so he ends up in the Communist party as one of the very first card carrying soldiers - gets an immediate promotion to major and gets sent to a party school to become a political commissary.
And that's how my grandpa got transformed from one of the unluckiest soldiers of the war into a commie bigwig. At least until 1954, when he got demobilized and sent back to be party chief over a building company.

The guy who pulls night guard gets the sole AK.
One night its a 17 year old kid. Noises in the dark. H e challenges, no reply, more noises coming towards him. "Oh shit its the Contras". Mag dumps into the darkness and wakes the camp.
Next morning they find a cow with 30 bullet holes in it. They ate it all. Even the nostrils. Three months without meat will take away any squeamishness.

>Joins military (Unsure what branch as after the war the only one who actually talked to him that was and is still alive is my mom)
Anyway.
>Gets captured by Germans at some point in the first few weeks of US deployment in Northern France
>Separated from other prisoners and taken to live on a farm in the middle of Germany apparently
>Stayed with said owners of the farm
>Never ate, slept with a makeshift knife under his pillow in the barn
>War ends

My uncle was an infantryman in Korea, he was injured in some minor fashion but he was in a field hospital for a bit and his unit moved on without him. Somehow he became an orderly for some higher-up officer, less an orderly and more a bodyguard because the officer liked to be close to the front and he wanted a "good man" watching his back.

Anyway, after serving as an orderly for a couple months, he looked into the forest thinking he heard something, turned back around because he couldn't see anything, and got "shot up by some zipperhead with a burp gun" I guess a PPSH? Then they strung him across a Jeep to take him to a MASH and the Jeep got "it's ass end blew off by one of them big mortars" He said it jarred him like hell and hurt like a bitch b/c he was already wounded but he didn't catch any shrapnel. I figure the body of the Jeep took most of the shrpnel and blast wave else he'd be toast.

After the war he worked for a "government company" idk doing what exactly but he wouldn't talk about it.

I'm American. My grandfather only spoke seriously of the Korean war one time. My father was there as well. It was an august occasion, he mostly spoke of the atrocities of war, described some of the people he killed and how he did it, left us with two names of men who likely saved his life, and finally showed us some paraphernalia, some old Zippos, photos and stuff like that.

Mom's dad was born in '22, bought this gun before he either enlisted or was drafted, and went through Normandy on his way to find Hitler. It's sad, but all I know for fact is that he turned down some battlefield commissions and stayed enlisted because "they died faster than we did." Came back, had a bad drinking problem, but eventually quit cold turkey. Something about waking up drunk on the steps of a cathedral, terrible hangover, and believing that it was a sign.

I never got to meet the man because he died of cancer before I was born. This little .22 put food on the table way back when, and she shoots straight as fuck with irons (which are somehow dented and skewed left), but I have yet to zero the scope past "eh, the squirrel won't live at 30 yards". NOBODY cared for it until my mom's mom found out I liked family history and guns, and she only kept it because it reminded her of him.

I'll try to make you proud, grandpop.

>be my great great grandfather
>join WW1 part of the 2nd Portuguese expeditionary force
>Battle of La Lys was the 1st major battle he was part of
>Gets injured while tending to the wounds of some injured comrades.
>Goes home, rarely talks about war, just that it was hell

Nothing really great, just he was in the battle where one of Portugal greatest WW1 hero fought, Soldado Milhais. Who was moving from trench to trench alone with a Lewis gun shooting at the germans for hours making the illusion that the trenches were well defended, while the portuguese and the british pulled back.
Now my dad
>Parents immigrated to France in the beginning of the Colonial War so my dad didn't get drafted
>Travels back to Portugal alone, without saying anything so he could enlist
>Joined the Portuguese Comandos and went to Angola
>Get injured by grenade shrapnel and have to stay in a makeshift hospital for 1 week, and wait for papers to return home
>runs away from hospital, steals a civilian bike and rides back to his unit in hospital garments

Some months later
>He and his unit were doing a mission in the jungle that was supposed to be a 1 night thing, >ends up being in the jungle for 2 weeks
>unit getting some rest, back faced to a huge tree in a circle.
>most of the guys took out their boots because they've been walking on a swamp earlier
>middle of the night the sentry starts whispering "contact" saying he heard noises real close
>Dad woke up just in time to see a monkey stealing a friend's boots.
>He had to make some sandals with tree bark and from there he was called Tarzan

He didn't talk much about the war either, but was incredible proud of his service and his unit. He didn't missed any annual gatherings with his former mates, and was head of my city veteran comandos group.

>assigbed to a small fob for moat of the war building latrines.

>got baked and built showers and toilets all war.

No idea if the story is true or not, but one that my family loves/hates

>great grandfather just arrived at base near London as part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force
>walking along, minding his own business
>turns a corner and comes face to face with a bear
>having no rifle, FUCKING RUNS
>bear chases
>climbs flagpole to get away
>bear hugs the bottom of the flag pole and seems to be trying to shake him down
>crowd gathers round to look at the idiot chased up a flagpole by Winnie the local mascot
>everyone has a good laugh
>except for great grandfather, who nearly pissed himself
>owner gets bear to leave so he can come down
>years after the war was over, his wife brings home a book to read to their child

Yeah the daughter was in love with my opa and he saw it as the only way out of that prison. When they got in japan she got all "kiss me, marry me" but he didn't want to and she was nice enough to send him back to indonesia.
Yeah a lot of shit happened in that time.

My great grandad never told any stories about service (he actually died a couple weeks ago) but he did tell us about training a couple times. He was in the air force and he told a story about how they'd put a guy in an enclosed pressurized space and slowly remove (or maybe it was add, been years since he told the story and I'm retarded) oxygen. They'd have the guy tie his shoes as they were doing this and he'd get drowsier and drowsier until he passed out, around which they would start fixing the air supply. He'd wake up and have no fucking clue what he was supposed to be doing, and his shoe would be only half tied. I always thought it was funny.

My mother was an aircraft inspector during WWII. I didn't know to ask what her inspector stamp looked like but she worked the PBY Catalina line for Consolidated.

After coming home from my first deployment in Iraq I spoke with my great grandpa who was a courier in WWII (motorcycle type). He let me know that they would mow down any blacks they found along the way and blame it on the Germans.
He passed away a few months later and meh I have no idea if he was full of shit or what.

Still haven't told my mom or grandma.

Read "The Tunnels of Cu Chi" and the PTSD is highly understandable!

A close buddy of mine was a United Kingdom Royal Marine whom recalled surviving a close quarters engagement with a Russian tank that was nigger-rigged up by the rags in the desert. Left the service as a Colour Sergeant, was supposedly flagged for promotion prior to leaving and was post-humously given the Queen's warrant, which technically meant that he was a Warrant Officer Grade 2 after his passing.

One of my history teachers served in Vietnam as an infantryman. I'll go ahead and tell that story.

> Just promoted to Spec 7 in the United States Army.
> Woke up one night, popped some acid. Camp's looking all through the wire.
> Supposedly, they can't find the 2LT. It is now that something ticked in his head, and he went and got his grandpappy's M1911 and his knife, and hopped into a gookchute.
> Spent a week and a half trying to find the 2LT. Never really wanted to talk about 'Nam, and got really shaky when you said 'gook' around him.
> Learned the hard way that he carries that M1911 at all times.

1950s army story.
My grandfather joined the army because he knew he was gonna get drafted so he might as well pick the job he got.
Ends up in southern Germany with a secret clearance escorting pictures of Nazis around in some kind of box that required a code every 6 hours or some shit like that.

>great grandfather emigrated to canada from france as a child
>served in the canadian army as a sapper during WWI

>one son (my grandfather) enlisted to serve in WWII but was rightfully deemed too batshit to serve
>other son (my grand-uncle) did serve. Landed in the second wave at Omaha, fought in the battle of the bulge, etc.
Grand uncle that served in WWII vehemently claimed that the issued 1911s were jam-o-matic pieces of shit.
Said thompsons were only good for mag dumping through doorways and windows during house to house fighting.

Also have a WWI vet great-grandfather on the other side of the family but I don't know the particulars of his service.

>he gets pulled up and captured by some kind of military unit
>he wakes up on a cell and a cowboy starts to torture him until he agrees to join a group called diamonds duck or something like that
>he is issued a rifle and a uniform and told to patrol a rig on the middle of the sea at some undisclosed location
