>Immediately after the Syrian Su-22 fighter jet dropped its bombs, two American F/A-18E Super Hornets, flying from the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush, engaged, firing a AIM-9 Sidewinder -- a short-range air-to-air missile -- at the Syrian plane from about half a mile away, two US officials told CNN.

>But the Syrian jet deployed defensive flares, causing the US missile to miss its target. The US pilot proceeded to fire off a second missile, an AIM 120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile, which hit its intended target, downing the Syrian warplane and forcing its pilot to eject, the officials added.

So a modern AIM-9 was defeated by some flares from a decades old shitty soviet plane

Gotta use up that stock of old missiles before the X starts full on production

Gonna take a wild guess that it was an AIM-9L, which is a decades old missile for that decades old soviet plane.

>So are the Russian conducting "shorties" with Su-35 as esocrt, or did those damn meddling turks only get away with it because there was no Su-35 present?

ofc there was on su 35 at the time the su24 were returning (as far as both us and russia said) and the su35 went to help another su 24 nearby(from the flightpath both provided)add to that the short rwr the fact that even one survived its a miracle

So the Russians are flying without countermeasures because they have escorts except the escorts don't actually stick around long enough to be useful because they're not numerous or competent enough to manage protecting more than one plane at once?
Cool.

It probaly makes sense if you are russian...or retarded.

who said they didnt had countermeasures? the su24 simply didnt had a modern radar to counteract the aim 120 thats why if you see the path of the su24 they were casually patrolling near the border till some seconds before they realised the missile probably and started to do sharp turns

the distance between the f16 and the su24 at the lowest was 50 km....(the moment the su24 crossed the airspace).
unless turks managed to slap some rocket booster on the aim 9 then no
it was an aim 120 mainy because this is their standard payload for dogfights (the greeks use the iris-t and the turks have the aim 120)

usa actually provided a rough map on where they shot the tomahawks we know that those that went from the south didnt got affected but those on the center and the north west did the fact that they found a lot of debris no were near the airfield prove as much few of them managed to hit the target because they were on the final legs using ins but those that got affected by the bubble and had to use INS so early in flight just hit the sun or some poor sheep on the ground

Having omnidirectional antennas for jamming is so retarded that only russians could possibly think it's a good idea. Maybe that is why russia has problems with jamming of the shelf walkies in Ukraine while OSCE drones fly all over and photographs their jamming stations?

>>
>>34330112
Please explain why the shot down Syrian Su-22 was providing close air support for ISIS, bombing SDF (Kurd) forces?
Please explain why this is not the first time SyAF is conducting CAS for ISIS, this happened before in a couple of incidents they bombed the Kurds fighting Assad, and the pro Turkish rebel in the Azaz vs ISIS fighting.

Most of the refugees coming to the west were created by Assad bombing to shit the Sunni cities, so the civilians had to leave.

>Su-22 sees it and easily evades because lol HOBS
>Su-22 kills its energy, takes an AMRAAM up its ass from .6nm(!)

etc...

>>

I don't understand why we still use the AIM-9, a missile originally designed in 1956, when the russians have had 3 generations of IR AAM's - the K-13 (AA-2 Atoll - a reverse engineered Sidewinder), the R-60 (AA-8 Aphid - a indigenious, smaller, lighter and more agile missile than early sidewinder) and the R-73 (AA-11 Archer - one of the first widespread off-boresight AAM's).

The rest of the west as well has largely dropped the Sidewinder as well. There ain't no fucking excuse the AIM-9X is supposed to be above par to the early AA-11. And there is definitely no damned excuse to continue fielding AIM-9L's when there are a metric fuckton of 3rd world countries and lesser allies that will buy the shit up and when the 9L can be upgraded to near 9X standard
>>
>>34331270
It was a head on pass, so I assume the AIM-9 didn't get a good picture on the Su22 engines as it was looking at them from the front, which could mean that it was easily binned by the Su22. The hornet could have then passed, did a 180 and then wiped out the Su22 with a AMRAAM.
>>
>>34331337
Same reason the tomahawks got used on that chemical bombs delivering syrian airfield: There are enough lying around, they have been payed for a long time ago and it is literally cheaper to use them now, then to scrap them a little later, because they reach their top shelf time. It is not rocket sciene, pun intended.
>>
>>34329581
If that was the case they would have stuck with the Atoll (literally a copy of the sidewinder) and kept upgrading it.
The AA-2C was the dead end for the USSR, China kept developing the Atoll/Sidewinder - esp as it got it's hands on later Sidewinders, developing the PL-3 and the PL-5, which have also been replaced by newer missiles

>>
>>34331337
There's nothing the R-73 does better than a modern AIM-9. AIM-9s have HOBS as well. You fell for a shitposting thread.
>>
>>34331171
Mirages are shit, and Canberra's aren't exactly a hard target
>>
>>34331406
Except you know size, weight, aerodynamics, body, control surfaces.
The Sidewinder is literally a story of slapping better and better guidance onto a pig.

The only thing we should be doing with old sidewinders, besides selling them, is making new and improved Sidearms while we search for a better short range AAM.
Even if it's guidance is now slightly inferior to the AIM-9, the R-73 is still a more maneuverable and faster missile, not to mention the fact that it was designed from the onset to be off boresight, the Sidewinder is a larger missile.
>>
The AIM-92 is a better short range missile than Sidewinder FFS
>>
>>34331530
>Size
has stayed the same

>weight
Has probably changed

>Body
completely different, just looks the same.

>Control surfaces.
Completely different, usually changes with each model. AIM-9X has the most notable differences, as it has thrust vectoring.

The AIM-9X, for all intents and purposes, is a completely new missile design. It's like the differences between the Hornet and the Super Hornet.
>>
>>34331429
The Sidewinder wasn't designed for HOBS, and is significantly less maneuverable than missiles designed from the ground up for HOBS.

Again if the Sidewinder is so good why did the Chinese and Russians ditch their copies - esp. when they had access to later Sidewinders during Vietnam and later conflicts

A modern soviet aircraft could likely break to avoid the this missile. Modern aircraft have missile launch warnings so you'll know one is coming. Spotting an incoming missile and getting in the right position to break correctly is a bit of an art form though.

Things that did not happen. Putin thought he could put the West on blast by taking Crimea and singlehandely caused the re-investment and increasing ops tempo for NATO and the massive sanctions on his country. He literally played himself for the fool.

Maybe if Russia wan not concerned about grabbing territory in other nations, they wouldn't have these problems. The South Ossetia issue is a "Russia being an idiot" issue, NOT an American one. The only thing the US did was offer to train the Georgian military before the war. The only thing they did during it was fly back Georgian troops to a forward base under US fighter cover.
>i mean the whole incident on the airport that the americans wanted to bomb the russians
It was a NATO mission idiot, the troops on the ground were British tankers with America Cav scouts as a reserve (I know because I had a bunch of college classes with a guy who WAS one of those Cav scouts). NATO wanted to take the airbase so they could fly more troops and supplies in that would force the Serbs to fall back and stop them from genociding the people living in the area. Russia holding the airport meant that the Serbs could continue killing indiscriminately. I actually ask the Cav scout guy if they could have beaten the Russian stationed at the airport and he said the battle (assuming they actually fought and didn't surrender) would have lasted less than 6 hours.
>>
>>34333888

Actually that article says that Macron is following the US's lead, previous French leaders saw that Assad could be reasoned with but Macron says that Assad must go.

The title of the article is a beat misleading but if you read it (it's less than a page in total) you'll understand fully what they say.

Goalpost movement in 5...4...3...
>>
>>34335930
Why? Because it gets dragged along every chance given, no matter how relevant it is to begin with, by now it is on a "dont trust da jooz" level. Its like the standard shill answer and people keep parroting it simply because they seen others do this. Furthermore it only goes and is used in one direction, which is contradicting the narritive you actually claim to have, people like you will endlessly demand evidence as long as it aligns against the US, but turn both eyes blind the second it is about Russia or Assad for example. And spare us with the lie that it isnt the case, because we could actually see that from people like you, if you actually where doing that, but this is magically never the case, my total neutral poster number 9356, doing the exact same thing.

t non american
>>
>>34336040
it gets dragged along exactly because it's such a good example. If the US wasn't constantly on the winning side i'm sure people would use similar shit against other superpowers, but turns out there aren't any around that fuck up other countries on the other side of the globe since decades.
>>
>>34336269
It gets dragged along, because it is one of the rare cases the US has done that, it gets dragged along because people think its their super button they just have to press every time the US says something they dont like. It is overused, gets constantly refered to without thinking and without actually honestly taking the claimed idea behind it honest and apply their claimed doubt on more than the US.
>>
>>34336347
it couldn't have happened more often because there's a limited amount of countries to fuck up and a population at home that's tired of war. Probably it wouldn't get used that often if samntha power and nikki haley and the people that repeat the drivel these persons spew weren't everywhere. Constantly claiming moral superiority whilte doing all kinds of fucked up shit without even providing evidence doesn't work for to long, who would've thought. They'll have to find something new
>>
>>34329575
>NATO plane shoots down syrian jet.
>IT TOOK 2 MISSILE SO IT DOESN'T COUNT GUYS!
>>
>>34336545
It gets used so often, simply because they like their fake little moral superiority, while actually being everything they attack at the same time. Those people are hypocrites through and through, of course they dont care what it actually means or what consequences should be there through this for themself, all they care about is, that they can claim to be honest and have high moral ground by raping an event for the 9000s time, declaring this is a moral thing to do, while fully relying on the anonymity and the inability to track their whole posting, in order to check if they judge everything on the level they claim.

They fired a sidewinder from about 2,640 feet?
And it launched flares in the meantime that had enough time to seduce the missile?

When effective gun range is about 3,000 feet?

You guys really hate Russians huh.

To be more on topic, I really don't understand how this AIM-9X missed, if it even was an X.
There is no way the Su-22 would have known it was coming, and even then the 9X is supposed to be very flare resistant. Someone already posted a video of that F-4 dumping a fuck load of flares and the AIM9 gave zero fucks.

Su-22 is also pretty much incapable of performing maneuvers required to avoid a 9X.
