I'm 19 years old, parents are not against guns but aren't crazy about them so can't get a gunsafe or anything since i'll probably be moving out at some point. I have about 6 firearms, some in hard and some in soft cases. Where can I put them to avoid rusting? I currently have them sat in my closet in their cases and check on them every now and then, have had no problems yet but will I eventually run into a problem? I keep them propery lubed and greased if needed to be greased, should I worry?

nigga, buy a lighter built gun cabinet that locks. Like a stackon. Take it with you when you move.
Even a light/medium duty safe is better than nothing.

This is my gun storage, but I will be getting a big ass safe come next year just not sure which one
>>
>>34327456
If the actions and barrels are stainless, you'll likely be fine. Otherwise, you do need to regularly take the guns out to clean them, oil them, and deal with any new rust. Gun cases with a soft lining are detrimental for long term storage because it is like pressing an atmospherically humid sponge against the gun. You could potentially avoid these problems by wrapping the guns in a silicone impregnated gun sock before putting them in the case.

Move out when you can, and get a gun safe and dehumidifier bar when you're in a stable location both physically and financially.

How about something like this? I wish it'd tell you how heavy the damn thing is to see how much of a pain moving it would be. Will this shit actually hold up to 18 rifles? I'm looking at the bigger one because these 6 I have are definately not going to be my last. So far my list is : M1 Garand, RC Kar98k, AKM, M39, 91/30, AR-15. I got plans coming up getting a SLR-104. Do I just get this and get a humidifier for it?

according to dicks sporting goods:
https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/stack-on-18-gun-fully-convertible-steel-security-cabinet-15skou18gncnvrtblgua/15skou18gncnvrtblgua

That specific safe weighs 92 lbs. And from what I see, $150 is a good deal for that safe.
Just be sure to bolt the fucker down. You want to deter the amateur smash and grab burglar, not provide him with a convenient box to steal all your guns with in one go.
>>
>>34327691
I doubt my parents would let me bolt anything down. I live in a very nice area in a nice small town with a good security system, i'll probably just leave it as a burglars dream until I move out. There's usually someone home at all times anyways. Thanks for the help.
>>
Whatever you do OP, don't just store them in closed cell foam cases. You can't get the moisture fully out of those cases even with dessicant, so if you leave the guns in there for any length of time, in contact with the foam, they are guaranteed to rust.

If you won't buy a cabinet or just lean them against a wall, then buy a handful of silicone-impregnated gun socks and at least sheath them up in those before putting them in the cases. They'll still probably rust but not as badly or as quickly.
>>
>>34327456
If you check on them regularly and keep them greased they'll be fine.
>>
>>34327719
So, should I get my guns the hell out of the foam cases and just let them lean against the closet wall? It probably doesn't help that my closet is attached to my bathroom right... it's connected to the sink and then on the opposite side of the closet is the shower/toilet. I'd keep them in my room but my parents get pissy when they're sitting out and i'm not in the position to argue, their roof their rules.

here's a picture to better explain where they're at. The room i'm standing in is with the shower, then the sink area divides the closet where my guns are.

>>34327745
Depends on the relative humidity of your area, but yeah. All mine are just chilling bare in the closet. Ideal relative humidity for guns (wood and metal) is 50%, and here the relative humidity is 50-60% year round so just open air is fine. Just having them open in a closet gives you the possibility of controlling humidity if you need to too, because you likely won't be able to gain much control out in a large room.
>>
>>34327456
Go get some of these friendo:

http://www.zerustproducts.com/products/firearms-ammo-weapons/vci-gun-storage-bags/

https://www.amazon.com/Anti-Corrosion-Tactical-Shotgun-Storage/dp/B00FROLA4Y/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_200_bs_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=NCMKV4TDS51GDYJZZPSM

Clean / Oil as normal, and then just stick it in the VCI bag. You're pretty much set at that point, especially for the vacuum storage bags.

The gun sock idea suggested above or just open air storage might be the best then.
Also, take an oiled rag and wipe down the entire firearm to protect it from oxygen. Then, wipe off the exterior oil when you take them out to be used.
>>
>>34327772
If that's next to a bathroom with a shower then I'd definitely move them, that's no good at all. But if that's at the opposite end of the bedroom from the shower AND YOU KEEP THE CLOSET DOOR CLOSED ALL THE TIME, should be fine.
>>
>>34327716
crye moar bitch or get a bed safe on mommy and daddies "go away we love you xir" card.
>>
Not OP here, but I keep the AR under my bed in a guitar case, which is foam. it needs to be ready to go.

my Hi Power and .22 are in gun socks. with silicone packets so I think they are good, and I shoot my glock all the time and oil it up at least twice a month so I think it's good.

How likely is my AR to rust. I'd say I clean it at least once a month and give it a generous helping of CLP.

I will probably be buying a gun safe soon, but even then I want to keep one gun loaded and ready to rock if I need it. How do I do that without worrying about it rusting?
>>
>>34327791
those vci bags look like a good idea, if I just stuffed them into those after cleaning and then put them inside their cases will they be alright?
>>34327813
I oil all the metal before putting them up.
>>34327818
The closet door is closed, and it's really my only option.

You should be gtg then. Just check on them occasionally for surface rust beginning.
Don't stress out about it senpai.

Is that an 11" barrel? I have the same rail but with an 11.5". Looks nice flush with the rail.
>>
>>34327600
i vote this. as far as theft, its a small step above what you have now. plus you can worry less about rust. if you were near cincinnati, i would just give you one of those lockers
>>
>>34327970
i'll pay for shipping ;) i'll have to wait till next month to afford it and it'd be a shame for all of my rifles to completely rust by then.
>>
>>34327929
the zipper and it's under some blankets. I can get to it pretty quickly. Would i be better off just wrapping it in a blanket and skipping the foam case altogether?
>>
>>34328031
it wouldnt be worth the cost of shipping. check craigslist, you might pick one up for next to nothing

A DE-HUMIDIFIER!!!

>tfw did my duty to save several innocent guns
And you don't really need one unless you live in some gross state like Florida. Just have a coat of clp on them if it's an issue where you live.
>>34327719
>don't just store them in closed cell foam cases
I've stored my guns in these for years at a time, including my mosin and museum grade SKS. No rust after 5-6 years, then again I live in AZ (the dry Florida).
>>
>>34327780
Nigger thats too many sidearms
>>
>>34328138
oops, de-humidifier. thanks. and I live in SC, this thread made me anxious that I just went and gave them all a bit of CLP and moved them from under my bed further away from the bathroom. Guess i'll keep a close eye on them like I have been and get a cheap safe to keep them in.
>>
i have one of these, its worth the buy if you have more than a few guns and youre concerned about humidity (4chan wont let me post a shortened link, sorry)

I'd just say lean it up in a corner with no case at all if youre intention is home defense.
Keep a magazine in it but not charged.
This might be a bad idea though if you have roomates or kids.

Put silicon impregnated gun socks on all of them before storing in cases.
