Hello fellow /k/ommandos, resident of /tg/ in dire need here, lend me your combined knowledge:

Assuming the apocalypse has come and gone quite a while ago, how feasible would it be to mobilize a warship or more specifically which of the types of ships would be the easiest to get moving?

A) Old-school veterans with antique steam propulsion like Texas or Mikasa
B) 20th century ships with boilers/turbines like Iowa or Edinburgh
C) Modern day nuclear ships like the Nimitz

Basically it's not a question of material or manpower, but rather ease of use/how intuitive it would be to restore/operate a ship without (a lot of) experts on the topic.

The easiest? B.
That being said, the chances of any average sized group of people having enough knowledge to get even a Cold War era boat running is extremely slim. You'd be better off finding a merchant vessel of some description.

Is there anything in A that is even capable of floating TODAY?

Most of the museum ships are ready o fall apart.

I think the Texas is still capable of making a run to a nearby drydock under her own steam for repairs;
if you had 30 qualified welders, a solid year, and some decent marine-quality steel, she could still be made seaworthy pretty easilly.

She's really just about the only one, though.
The Mikasa is in solid concrete,
the Warrior is too outmoded to count for shit,
and after that all you have are the H.M.S. Victory and the U.S.S. Constitution.

>U.S.S. Constitution.
GOOD ENOUGH FOR FALLOUT 4!

Seems legit

Who saved that /k/arrier meme? Frankly the Navy needs to give us a battlegroup and let us take over Somalia.
>>

The Aurora migt be able to go, also some american fleet subs, seen a video of one of them recently cranking up the diesels.

Hey freindo here you go

Jokes on you, the Constitution is still sea worthy. It goes out once a year
>>
>>34326340
Assuming real world scenario, the availability of candidates limits you more than the feasibility of restoring them. There just aren't enough relics available left in the water.

A more practical solution would be to rig an existing commercial ship (ideally with electric drive) with the extra structural strength, electrical, and weapon systems needed to fight.

The texas is literally falling apart.

So the thing about boats is that you have to put them in drydock from time to time to recoat the hull to prevent the ocean from literally eating away at the metal.

Texas has sat in the water for a long while, the metal is starting to corrode and, though it can be prevented from leaking and sinking, to make it seaworthy (let alone battle worthy) would require an extensive hull replacement program.

USS Olympia is the oldest US Steel warship and I think might be the oldest afloat. The fucker was in the Spanish American War.

But the damn thing has not be drydocked since the 1950s and is in serious need of repair below the water line. The hull is in such bad shape they almost scrapped it out and sunk it for a reef a few years ago. Thankfully cooler heads prevailed.
>>
>>34326340
What about the Olympia down in philidelphia. Runs off of coal.
>>

The only reason they didn't tow her out was they don't have the money to. Their only real plan is to just let her sit until what happens happens.
One day someone will go to open her for tours, and only her funnels and masts will be above water

>the Texas is still capable of making a run to a nearby drydock under her own steam for repairs;

Nigger she's not running period. Aside from the electrical wiring, the whole thing is fucked.
>>
>>34327742
False.

A preservation movement saved the ship and they have been doing temporary repairs on the hull systematically for the last couple years now. They got 600k for the immediate stabilization and are working to raise the $15 million for eventual dry-docking and real repairs.
