500, b/c cheaper. Fit and finish is looser, but not in any way that negatively impacts function. Shoots 3" groups at 100 yards with the right barrel/slug combo, shoots cloverleafs at 50 yards as a .50 muzzleloader.

The Mossman 5000 has a camuch created elevator, whereas the 870 has a spring actuated elevator.

The majority of 870 jams that aren't related to deformed shells or short stroking are caused by the elevator, the Mossberg eliminmates that entire category of malfunction.

I have a nearly flawless 870 ringmaster from the 80's. My dad bought half a dozen for so in some sale for his kids plus extra. So silky and smooth.
I also have a 500 mariner that I bought to keep on my sailboat.
I prefer the 500.

I've had both, as well as Ithaca 37 and Winchester 1200.
Mossberg is lighter and less prone to rust, 870 is slightly more customizable and the extra weight makes heavy loads more tolerable.

They're not as loud as you think (basic bitch AR15 is much louder), and buckshot doesn't spread nearly as much as you think (1" per yard on average).

I have 3 500s and no 870s, I don't like the action release location or safety location on the Remingtons.

benelli guy here, are the problems with the express as bad as people make them out to be? local place has a good deal on 18.5" barrels with rifle sights, kind of want to build an old style police gun with the walnut furniture, but don't know what to use as a base gun. might try trolling the gun show for a donor receiver.

I don't care for either. The Mossberg safety never felt good to me and the Remington is unnecessarily heavy. Both have cruddy lockup mechanisms that rob the user of control in the name of safety, I'd much rather have any given Winchester instead. Right now I'm running a FABARMS FP6 clone, it's got the features I like.

Read the description, it's a civilian model converted to military specs but not actually issued in a military. Seems legit. I'll tell you though, get the Chinese clones, the originals are not made for modern shotshells and you may run in to some issues. At the very least you can save battering an antique. The Chinese ones are built by Norinco anyway so they're top quality, better than the real ones even.

Honestly they are simple enough you can just order the main spring and replace it yourself. You need some punches but that's the only fancy tool you need. I swapped the firing pin on my 500 and it took maybe 15 minutes.

An older 870 absolutely shits all over any Mossberg from a build quality perspective, even the original Express guns were nice. If I were buying new though? Mossberg doesn't seem plagued by the QC issues Remington has in recent years, in fact they only seem to have improved(if only slightly). Plus they're easier to repair when needed, so...
