I'm curious, what are the alternatives to the AR-15 that /k/ would recommend? Say you live in a ban state, or you just want a 223/556 that isn't an AR clone. What would you go for?

I'm thinking of getting a Kel Tec SU-16. It's got good reviews, and I won't be using it for anything other than target shooting. I'm also debating getting a mini 14, but the fact it doesn't take AR magazines is a real bummer.

Thoughts?

>you live in a ban state
Most states ban shit by name and feature, meaning you can still generally buy whatever you want. You just have to machine a bullet button or whatever the fuck gimmick is telling Cuomo to go fuck himself.
>>
>>34319876
I like this gun but seems too flimsy. Can't eat lead. Very picky with ammo.

You can get a cool looking stag-15 thumb hole stock that doesn't violate the ultra deadly pistol grip bullshit.

If you don't want a butchered gun you can always get a mini 14 although they are more expensive. The thordson stocks are OK but are uncomfortable as shit
>>
>>34320058
I want a Mini 14 so bad but it's so hard to justify buying one when I already own an AR and could just build another AR. I don't know what role it would fill in my life.

Wait until the RDB-S comes out and tell us if it's as weird handling as it looks. Kek-Tec managed to make it Commiefornia compliant, and in a weird super-slim body.
>>
>>34319876

I saw a guy talking about how his keltec su peened and cracked/fractured the back of the polymer receive which has made me really weary of them as it is a polymer receiver with a buffer pad inside the rear of the it implying the bolt is supposed to travel all the way to the back and impact the buffer. A setup like that with a polymer receiver witg only a buffer between it and the bolt carrier came across as sketchy to me ever since, though I've also seen a video where s guy rapid fired his until the hand guards melted off with no malfunction so that's a pretty good. The cracked receiver issue may have been a one-off as I've seen many people praise them for what they are.

The role your father would have played if he hadn't abandoned you and your mom for his boyfriend in San Francisco.

All Semi-auto rifles are next on the agenda for banning. We are heading towards Australian style gun laws minus the confiscation.

Fightlite SCR, although it's still kind of an AR-15.
>>
>>34320418
If you already have an AR a mini 14 is pretty pointless unless you just want it for the collection or aesthetic value. Regardless it will be a waste of money.

Get an M1A or something with a full size cartridge if you must have a rifle like that.

The only real alternatives I see are to get a Mini-14. If you don't mind 7.62x39 as a caliber choice you could get an SKS. The SU-16 is well regarded from what I can tell, but I never see them. Personally, I'm trying to get a hold of a saiga chambered in 7.62x39, but those Russian fucks won't get their stateside production running.
>>
Literally any other 5.56 carbine.
There are dozens. DOZENS.
>>
>>34321000
Yea, but for ban states? It's hard as fuck to find anything other than a Mini-14 that's compliant. The only other 5.56x45/.223 AR-15 alternatives I can recall are the SU-16, Aries SCR, and unconverted saigas, and all of these options are hard as fuck to find. You might have more leeway if you live in a ban state other than New York though.
>>
OP here.

I went to the gunstore and picked up a Kel-Tec Su-16C, and holy fuck, the thing felt like it was a nerf gun. Which sucks, I really wanted to love this gun, but CHRIST is it cheaply made.

I asked out of curiosity if I could order a Mini 14 through them, they said they could get me a Factory New Mini 14 for $680.

>>34320673
This is a solid second, actually. I could get a nice upper thrown on and it'd be beautiful. I may go with this.

Is that a deal, or not worth it?>>34320673
>>
>>34321437
$680 is high. I would pay $450 maybe $500. Unfortunately I paid around $680-$700 for mine. I don't really regret buying it but, but I do feel like a sucker for paying that much.
>>
>>34321437
Hey OP, stay the hell away from KelTec unless you are getting a sub2000. As for AR clones, I don't know any.
>>
>>34321486
I see stores selling the mini used for that amount. GunBroker is selling some police surplus minis that are near that range right now.

If you can show me where to buy a mini 14 for $500 new, please do.
>>
>>34320469
There's the RDB-C which IIRC is already out.
>>
>>34321676
You just have to hunt a little bit, try different gun stores, find individuals with FFLs that also sell, maybe go to a gun show. I don't know where you are, so I cant really come up with any recommendations. The price I gave was just more or less what I feel a mini-14 is worth. It's a handy, neat little gun, but it has some issues. From my experience, the action tends to gum up quickly, and it's not the most pinpoint accurate gun out there. Also it has expensive as fuck mags, and it doesn't like eating steel case ammo.

But some stores try to rob you with $800 minis, so $680 isn't cringe inducing levels of overpriced.
>>
>>34321788
Nope. Just the standard one on the market so far.
>>
>>34320992
Nice Chinese ak-47 variant anon.
>>
>>34320469

Fuck i dig that
>>
>>34322127
It's a 1956 Chinese SKS, pretty sure that shit got pulled out of the swamps in Vietnam before I bought it.
>>
Big5 has them for $770 right now which after sales tax and DROS fee is about $850.

That's about the same as using the special order price from my local gun ($750) store since they charge an extra on top of the DROS and I would have to pay for shipping, not to mention having to wait for it.

Unfortunately those are the lowest new prices I've seen for commiefornia in a while.
>>
>>34319876
Ares SCR
>>
>>34319876
I had one but aside from the ability to fold it in half and the handguard being a bipod, I didn't really like it. Traded it for an SKS.
>>
>>34319876
I like the masterpiece arms MPAR-556, mainly because of the design- it has a fuckhuge heavy-and-pointless machined aluminum handguard, but other than that, it's essentially a copy of a leader t2, which is a simplified copy of an ar-18.

I dig it certainly, would be the perfect guerilla rifle, only thing is the fuckhuge handguard
>>
Get a collection of H&R handi-rifles. Will be band in Cali but not until after autos. Trick it out for long range and have fun.

Take your pick
.223, .308, 7mm-08, .30-30 .30-06, 45-70. .444 Marlin.

The SCR is definitely an option but just a heads up, be prepared to dish out ~700 for a lower and bcg, AS WELL as buying the firing pin as the bcg comes in incomplete.

SU16 beats the shit out of itself when you shoot it, it has a short lifespan of like maybe 10000rds and magdumping or rapid fire in general dramatically cuts into that already short lifespan.

For what it's worth my friend has one and the reciever cracked where it connects to the buttstock after like 200 rounds, they made good on it but it was a pain in the ass. Plastic receivers on rifles are not great imo.

Plastic receivers can work, it's been done competently, it's just that the SU16 isn't a very strong design, the bolt just kind of batters the shit out of the receiver, even redesigning the receiver to allow for a little bit more bolt travel, make it a little bit thicker, maybe add some kind of rudimentary buffer (perhaps just some impact rubber pad), I think would vastly improve the lifespan of the SU16 series of rifles. It'd cost more, but it's not like the SU16 isn't super cheap already.

The CAV15, pic related, is an AR lower made from polymer and it's legit incredibly sturdy.
Probably the only good polymer AR lower actually.
>>
>>34325860
Why can't you just DIY such a buffer?
>>
>>34325871
No idea, never tried it, and honestly you'd have to test it to see if it even works at all, the bolt might just batter the receiver too much anyway.
>>
>>34319876
My dad has one and its pretty good
The only things I can think of are that recoil is kinda high because its very light
Handguard starts to get hot after 3 mags
Other than that, theyre a great option for ban states
>>
>>34319886
Finally, fucking this. I'm so tired of all the cucks freaking out like they might as well just turn in all their guns. You can buy whatever rifle you want, make it "featureless" and then buy your regular parts like a regular grip and flash hider and convert it in about 10 mins. Really not all that difficult. Taking it to the range is a different story.
>>
>>34326795
>had gun
> can't practice shooting it

Yeah, naw
>>
>>34325860
The CAV15 is solid as fuck, yeah. That's because it was designed to function as a polymer part from the get-go instead of someone taking an aluminum component and hastily making it out of polymer instead. GWACS sells them now, I think.

where the dickens can you get just the lower/bcg/pin? I've been thirsty for an SCR build but I can't justify buying a complete one when I'd swap 2/3rds of the shit out anyway.
>>
>>34327556
If you buy a complete AR upper then you can just take the parts missing from the SCR and take it from the bcg you get with your upper.

This certainly wouldn't help in a ban state, but not an AR clone either. While it looks much like an AR, the Sig Sauer 556 is a long stroke piston with a bi-lobe bolt, so it is actually closer to an AK. It is solid AF and pretty accurate. The only downside is that it is a bit heavy.
