Would 270 Winchester make a good military round?

Probably not, it's a lot of powder waste for something that only gets used inside of 300m. I'm sure it's been tested, military's aren't dumb, we are using the rounds that we are for a reason.

That would be fully sex, but I think the case should be re-designed to the same capacity but shorter. It's already a long case but long, high BC bullets need to be used and seat out far enough to utilize the most of the case for powder; this would mean that at x55 length you get a very long COAL unsuitable for assault rifles. I'm not really up on current intermediate rounds but if there was something like that it would be great.

Its not a big recoil round but I would fucking hate to be shooting anything bigger then .223 from a light rifle for an entire day. From my savage model 16 the recoil is fucking nothing, still pretty annoying to shoot off the shoulder though. Really don't know how the garand guys back in the day did it.

The lightest model 16 I can find in 7mm-08 is 5.65 lbs (16/116 Lightweight Hunter) going up to 7.25 lbs for the heaviest (16/116 Trophy Hunter XP, which comes with a scope).

A KAC SR-25 weighs between 7.5 and 10.75 lbs and the semi-auto action will slow down the recoil impulse, making it even more manageable.

The Garand is like +9lbs so that takes edge of recoil right there, also a self-loading action always takes away from recoil.

An AR10 in .270 I think would probably have pretty soft recoil, for different reasons.

Yes but not so much better than 308 and not comparable win300 or .338 that it would be worth the cost of switching although establishing supply would be easy.

Now, no. Not outside a precision rifle anyway. Long as fuck. Also, high BC bullet selection is limited, so there are better options for a sub .30" long range rifle, like 7mm Rem Mag.

God tier hunting round though. Quite a long point blank range, who cares about high BC when you're keeping your shots within 300m.

Not a standard AR-10, but there are companies that chamber AR's in all sorts of long rounds. There's a European company that makes one in 8mm Mauser, if I'm not mistaken.

All modern cartridges have a standard maximum peak pressure of about 65,000 psi. Any more than that, and you start running into limitations of the strength of brass. The difference between a 308 and a 264 magnum is that the 308 does not sustain that high pressure: it's only the PEAK pressure. Its case is too small relative to its bore to do so. The more overbore cartridges, on the other hand, are able to utilize slow burning powders to sustain high pressure, and that creates a tremendous amount of heat and strain on rifling. First of all.

7mm short magnum (270WSM) exists and second .243 has about the same external ballistics at a distance with even less of a drag coefficient while being a short action. .270win is long action.
