How effective is this really against AT?
>>34319109
>>34319111
I seriously have no idea.
>>34319109
Questionable. There's history in attaching different materials to armored vehicles in hopes the extra layer will deflect the projectile, absorb some its kinetic energy, or prematurely detonate the explosive.
The Russians used mattes springs and bed frames in WWII.
>>34319126
That's what I was thinking. I've seen more professional looking ones designed to detonate the warhead before it hits the armor. They look like grills and seem to be metallic.
It's probably more along the lines of "whatever helps you sleep at night" as opposed to actual protection. Gotta get those grunts to drive out to probable death somehow.

Wood can be an effective improvised armor if done correctly
There are claims going around that they help because the IS are using shitty RPGs or something.
>>34319165
>>34319172
That's similar to what I once saw that wasn't just all cobbled up.
>>34319109
Not much at all.
The only effect is increasing the stand-off range and providing a very slight spaced effect. The ammunition that they are likely to encounter are all HEAT, most with a 73mm cone diameter (RPG-7 with PV-7). You need several cone diameters to seriously degrade HEAT penetration, the wood armor here is placed too close to the body to increase protection.
Mostly it just makes the crew feel better, like most improvised armor.
>>34319175
>just makes the crew feel better, like most improvised armor
>it is armor for the heart, the will, and the spirit
Oh I found it. This is what I saw. Is there a name for this kind of armor extension?
>>34319200
slat armor iirc
>>34319208
>slat armor
Thank you. Guess I'm in for some comfy reading.
>>34319200
Cage or slat armour.
>>34319200
Slat armor, that actually functions on a different principle.
Spaced armor is intended to set of an incoming HEAT projectile before it reaches the main armor. This increases stand-off distance and (should) decrease penetration (when done correctly).
The main way slat armor defeats projectiles is by either damaging the fuse or by deforming the cone before detention. It is not intended to set off the main charge before the main armor.

Have a webm.
>>34319281
That's fucking neato. What about the plating armor extensions? I've seen those too but what are they called?
>>34319304
Not too sure what you're referring too. If you mean pic related, it's Explosive Reactive Armour.
>>34319326
Sounds like he is thinking of conventional spaced armor.
>>34319109
it is a good idea
but not to protect the driver but the infantery arround the car
bullets fragment or riccochet from the tanks and can injure or kill infantery near by
The Filipino wooden armor isn't for use against RPG's
These are often 1950s-era vehicles that have been kept in poor condition and concentrated .50 cal fire can penetrate the armor now.
>>34319456
>spaced armor
Ah yes, that's what I was thinking of. Thanks.
>>34319326
>reactive armour
Yeah I know about this too. From some game.
>>34319604
>>34319180
Look at how thin that shit is
He's probably right. I would expect that the armor would eat shit against any amount of .50 cal, and only be resistant to regular small arms fire.
>>34319487
I hadn't considered it, but that is an excellent point.
>>34319487
So the idea is have the bullets get embedded into the wood? Could be, actually.
>>34319604
Do the insurgents even have any .50 cals?
>>34319109
It may provide some protection. When armor is very thin (ie probably has around 8mm of steel armor) RPG explosion can not only penetrate armor with shaped charge but just break hull with blast wave. It results in much large hole and beyond armor effects. If RPG detonates at standoff it reduces such possibility and damage inside vehicle. Of course shaped charge jet will go through both sides of vehicle anyway.

They do now (since they knocked out several flip APC and there's a video of them hauling HMG from the wreckages)

They must be somewhat effective, I can't find it but there was a video of French Forces in Mali using cinderblocks on their wheeled ERC or AMX.

>SIMBAS and Cadillac Commandos.
They're 'Nam era at least.
>>34319487
Except if it gets hit by an explosive then wood fragments get added to the mix of shit
>>34319626
Could set of RPGS out of contact with the armor, defeating part of their AP capability.
>maybe
>>34319126
>The Russians used mattes springs and bed frames in WWII.
No, they didn't. They used purpose-built add-on armor made of expanded metal panels. Look at the picture more closely - those are not beds.

Yui
anyone have the cardboard armout photos
