Welp
Now that VEPRs are banned, there goes some of the last quality AK imports.
Now the question stand: how can American made AKs be improved? Why are they so shit? What can be done to remedy this and how come shit hole combloc countries can make some of the best AKs around, yet one of the foremost manufacturing giants in the world can't?
>>

They need better heat treating and they need to have the same features as original European AKs.
Cleaning rods and kits.
Painted finishes.
Chromed barrels.
The works. And at least make an attempt to not have that ugly ass blonde wood bullshit.

>how come shit hole combloc countries can make some of the best AKs around, yet one of the foremost manufacturing giants in the world can't?
because our domestic firearm industry is pants-on-head retarded when it comes to producing quality at a competitive price. They're prone to cutting corners to increase profit, and they've become complacent due to the fact that companies like Norinco are banned from selling their wares here. This allows them to fuck consumers in the ass.

it's worth noting that the generally-high quality of Eastern European AKs is largely due to decades of producing rifles to uniform state standards. The US's arms industry is different in structure and most companies have no similar relevant experience.

It boggles my mind people cant fathom labor costs in a 3rd world country versus the most advanced western civilization

Lets break it down:

>Ak parts have to be hand fitted

American labor isnt cheap, so this process is not conducive to an inexpensive product.

>engineers
They are arrogant. They will try and re-invent the wheel for something that already has set effective processes
EX: DDI extractors, early DDI magwell being entirely wrong for anything but p-mags, PSA double cut handguard retainer slot

>cast parts

Low quality castings with bad heat treat to meet a price point in the market. Century has known shitty business practices so this is no surprise

Americans are use to things being drop fit. Because of the way things in comblock countries almost everything will 1) be loose fit or 2) will need to be fitted. If you have taken the time to look at the machining marks, and "quality" on AK parts you will see very little concern is given to surface finish and in turn tolerance range the part is made to.
DDI got around this by using well made cast polish parts and started CNC'ing their own trunnions. This allowed them to make the parts have tighter specs and probably made parts hot swapable.
Yes, their extractors failed, but all their other parts were successful and well made
>>
>>34314897
They do, and they have Bushmaster M4s from Georgia and VAR Carbines.
>>
>>34314837
>how come shit hole combloc countries can make some of the best AKs around, yet one of the foremost manufacturing giants in the world can't?

It's all part of a conspiracy to keep the AR as the dominant rifle in the country.

I don't think of craftsmanship when I think of any modern produced gun in the United States. Cheap materials and horrible build quality compared to the past when gun makers took pride in their work.
>>
>>34315091
>American labor isnt cheap

You would think that the American firearms manufacturing industry could come together and figure out how to make quality AK production more efficient but apparently that's fucking wrong and LET'S ALL CHURN OUT OUR OWN AR15 is the future.

its stamping the least cost efficient way to manufacture if you are doing limited production runs

This.

In one end you have government/military supported or owned companies making AK series rifles for the military with decades of experience.

And in the other end it's private companies making AK clones and profit in the civilian market.

What amazes me is why OP does not realize this? Why don't people think about the whole manufacturing chain and just see the product and fill in the blanks with their imagination which usually results in "why ALL AMERICANS can't and why ALL RUSSIANS can...something something"?

I wish Zastava would just put their knowledge towards building a proper AKM, instead of the M70-ish N-PAP

Hell, even if they stuck to the N-PAP design and just changed it to a Russian side rail, stock, and foregrip - it'd still sell like hotcakes - 99% of buyers won't give a fuck about the finer points of AK47 vs AKM barrel and etc.

Either that, or those dirty Romanians actually unfucking their QC finally and adding some god damn dimples.

What gives? A .308 AR should cost as much as a 5.56

>>34314837
I'm not too much of an AKfag, but from what I can tell, the biggest issues with American AKs are that they use cast parts for critical shit like the BCG and trunnions.

if we can fix this issue, American AKs could be good.

How much did AKs cost to produce when they first entered production? Everyone thinks they're cheap but I'm starting to think that's just because the Soviets were commies and didn't have to pay their workers and shit as well they made a fuck ton of them and gave them away to anyone that claimed to hate the US.
If the US made the exact same rifle would they cost same?
>>
>>34314862
Here's the problem:

It isn't going to be cheap

And a lot of the hype/myth/etc around the AK is that they HAVE to be cheap, or else you turn a lot of people off from it. The AK's own reputation makes it very hard for smaller or new companies to make good parts on the cheap. And big domestic companies are going to spend $$$ on tooling and shit if they want to get into the game, which will still transfer over to ultimate costs.

Do you have an extra chromosome? I never said an ak has craftsmanship. Learn to read you retard.
>>
>>34314837
The problem is that AK-making isnt easy for small companies. It is very capital-intensive.

AKs were cheap because the Warsaw pact nations made them by the boat-load, they sold off much of their stockpiles, and new ones remain cheap due to the low labor costs and pre-existing capital.

When the state is willing to throw you free capital machinery and an old factory, production gets VERY cheap.

in contrast, an AR15 polymer lower is cheaper and easy to make. Polymer, simply put, is to modern manufacturing what steam engines and the spinning jenny were to textiles. It has weaknesses, but a lot of strengths.

unfortunately, we will never see AKs as cheap as bargain-bin ARs in the US again barring a sudden revearsal of Chinese/russian/DPRK/Khyber Pass/African warlord import bans, and AKs being shipped over and dumped into our market at a feverish rate when every 3rd world nation and Asian manufacturer realizes that Americans will spend the equivalent of $3,000 in their currency for a beat up old AK.
