Type 99 Arisaka at a local pawn shop, looks breddy gud, dust cover and AA sights, no mum, didn't check numbers but assume it's not matching. They want $400, what's a good price?

Pic includes my Last Ditch.

Also: Milsurp bread, poast milsurp.

How much for a barreled G88 action with a scrubbed receiver?

Given that I already have the Last Ditch the most I'll probably offer them is $325, and I probably won't even do that since i have so many other things that I need first.

Second part of the deal. Either a weird Israeli capture or a fucked up abomination.

Czech VZ. 24 receiver, Israeli 7.62 barrel, misc German K98k parts, Yugo BK refinished stock, weird bent bolt, Israeli sling. Feeds 7.62x51 reliably, but no Israeli markings aside from the barrel and sling. Still haven't pulled the stock though so I don't know...

Depending on the series and manufacturer it's either a fair price or on the high side. No monopod? You should have checked for matching numbers.

>200 at most.
>>
>>34315451
It won't be marked, as it was meant to be "sterile".

Easy way to check is to look at the chamber if it looks like it was hand done, or looks rough, it's likely a FN rework.

>>34315556

I bought a Type 44, Type 38 action with unmolested mum, and a Type 99 in an "interesting state" for $200.00 less than three years ago.

I paid more for the bayonets.. There are a lot of shitty Japanese rifles out there, don't pay absurd inflated prices for junk.

>>34315766
From my understanding, the Beglians provided barrel blanks to the Israelis, who then finished them. I don't know if that means they weren't marked, or if this one is something which is why I asked earlier. My problem is the lack of markings by the Israelis. No signature 7,62 stamped in big letters on the receiver nor stock, no Star of Davids, no IDF markings. Only hint is Israeli sling and the barrel.

Peep this weird as fuck bolt angle though. Probably used to be straight before the Israelis got it.

Had a beat to shit SA marked SVT-40 come into the store today. It's in pretty shit condition, but for I grabbed it right away, especially at the price I'm getting it for (335). I'm not expecting a shooter, but I'll risk it to see if it can be cleaned up a bit. I have a nugget with a terrible bore than shoots ok, so who knows.

I use to have an SVT, but I sold it after a bit since it didn't work right. I sold it for the price i bought it at, which I regretted. I bought the money to buy 2 garands though.

Putting it on layaway. It'll be a while until I can pick it up since I have 4 other guns on layaway as well. I'll take a closer look tomorrow.
>>
>>34316456

The bore is pretty bad. Bad ebough for the store to price it much lower than any SVT I've seen (aside from that dude from years ago that got a bubba'd one for like 250). The previous owner inherited it from his dad (who also inherited it) and I'm guessing one of them shot corrosive and never cleaned it. I've seen a beat to shit SA stamp sell for 750 about 5 years ago.

>>34316507
During my short inspection, I found 2 SA stamps; one on the mag and the other on the receiver. I'll give it a detailed look over tomorrow.

A lot of people poo pah "bad bores." They ignore the fact that a collectable gun is more than just a lead thrower. And of course, often times dust can make barrels look trashed out.

I literally told someone online that the barrel that he was questioning was good and was just dusty and was needing a good cleaning and someone else in alt caps called me an idiot and said it was worthless. The guy bought the gun, cleaned the barrel and sure enough it was pristine. How'd I know? There was this huge dust bunny between the cleaning rod and barrel. It sat in someone's closet for decades like that. It was also a later made Type 38, so it never had enough chance to be shot out. I see it all the time.

Granted, that's probably an extreme for this case, but something to look at. Finnish captured SVTs can often be in poor shape, but that's mostly from shooting their heavy ball ammo which it wasn't designed for.

>>
>>34316768
I'll try to get the bore cleaned tomorrow. I didn't have time today. I know they have bore snakes in the back to clean, but I might bring a rod and some jb bore compound myself.

Still, even with a busted bore, I can't really complain for the price. As long as there's nothing else wrong with it.

My inglis hi power has been getting a lot of failure to extracts recently. It's very apparent when using ammo that passed through the winchester factories like the white box shit and the browning brand ammo. When I put a snap cap into the bolt and shook the slide it was loose and could be shaken off semi-easily. However, the gun reliably extracts snap caps when I pull back the slide. Can I grab a replacement repro internal extractor from numrich and "fit" it or am I SOL? How would I even fit it?

>Why is it bad
old surplus ammo is just not very good, even discounting the age. for example, i pulled about 400 rounds of 100 year old surplus 7mm mauser made by Winchester. i measured the powder charges in 5 rounds and the variation in powder charge weight was +-almost 2 grains. not to mention all the projectiles are a different weight.
old ammo is dirty, corrosive, often misfires, and sometimes the brass cases rupture. that 7mm Mauser? 4/10 cases that actually fired, ruptured

from some anon in one of these threads many, many moons ago. No idea how correct it is, but here:

>from 1917-1927 three soldiers lost eyes to the improper heat treated 1903. They were NOT sent back immediately, in fact, the fact that they were not ever sent back is why there are warnings from the CMP as to which you can, and cannot shoot.
>Second, the heat treating method at Springfield at the time was a guy looked at them, and judged them by color...-...guys used to treating black powder Krag receivers were now making MUCH higher pressure 30.06 receivers.

wew. That's fucking terrifying.

Imagine scoring some sweep surp rifle, you go to shoot it and BANG. Permanently blind, or dead.
>>
Maybe a dumb question, but what's the barrel life on an SKS? I shoot mine a lot, and have put maybe 3000-ish rounds through it so far. I clean it after every outing, but I hear they only last like 10k rounds before the barrel is shot out. They're only going to go up and price, and I don't really wanna buy another one if the barrel is shot out, as much as I enjoy shooting it.

It was a fault of many things going wrong. There was some receivers that weren't forged correctly. The workers would just "eye ball" the right temperature of the metal instead of reading their gauges.
It was partly the fault of the poor quality ammo during WWI. The bullet jacket material would also tend to foul the rifling and soldiers would grease the bullets to try to prevent that and in doing the chamber pressure would increase.
And it doesn't help that the M1903 has a coned breech design which means the case head isn't fully supported.

So basically poor quality ammo led to cracked cases, which is helped by the lack of case support which in turn dumped all the energy into some suspect receivers.

>>34325218
>>34325358
The heat treatment wasn't at fault. Yes, they changed their heat treatment

From Hatcher's Notebook:
>One fact that this staff quickly developed was that the forging temperature was not being sufficiently controlled….These men thought that they could tell when a piece had the right heat just by looking into the furnace.” “…it was quickly found that the “right heat” as judged by the skillful eye of the old timers was up to 300 degrees hotter on a bright sunny day than it was on a dark cloudy one.

Also, the Krag was NEVER a black powder rifle.

30 year old noguns cunt here. This is probably the best thread to ask this. My dream rifle is a K98. I understand that Russian "captures" are not as enviable in terms of collectors pieces, but I don't care and am actually intrigued by why they put K98's together from various parts. I know it was to put good condition parts together and thus have better overall rifles. Bottom line Russian "captures", is that I would love to own one as long as I can get it for a good price (sub 500 bucks).

Bottom line I want a GERMAN K98 even if is a Russian "capture" and in good quality, as in being able to run 10,000 rounds through it before part replacement. And for no more than 500 dollarydoos.
Gunbroker and gunsamerica are the only sites that seem to have K98's regularly but holy fuck they are terribly expensive or in absolute terrible condition. Are there other sites, perhaps better than those two with regards to getting a good quality, and reasonably priced K98? Thank you!

In the days of dopey dreams—happy, peaceful Philippines,
When the bolomen were busy all night long.
When ladrones would steal and lie, and Americanos die,
Then you heard the soldiers sing this evening song:
Damn, damn, damn the insurrectos!
Cross-eyed kakiac ladrones!
Underneath the starry flag, civilize 'em with a Krag,
And return us to our own beloved homes.

I need to take her out for a real photo shoot sometime. Shes 1901 marked. I picked up the bayonet and scabbard at a gun show a few weeks ago for like $60. The scabbard was rusted to hell, and the handle wasn't in very good shape either. But I think it cleaned up very nice. Except for the marks on the bayonet of someone trying to sharpen it with like a dremel. The bayonet is from 1899.

Sacrificing your need a german one can get you an easternbloc copy for less than $350 in basically new condition. I have a yugo that I got for about $200 and i love it. However I mostly now see Serbian and Turkish.

Alsp, check local classifieds and pawn shops. Youre more likely to find and work out a deal locally. My old man got a German k98 with matching numbers (except the floorplate) for like $400 because it was in a pawn shop next to ARs and Remington 700s and nobody wanted an old military rifle.

So you guys freely import them and Russian SKS'. Meanwhile in the entire United States there are somewhere around 15-25K of them floating around? That is it. Of 1.6 million made only about 25k will ever be in the US.

I'd ship it to you for $50 provided it's in the CONUS. I bought it last summer. I ordered the wrong one while my newly acquired Krag was at the gunsmith. I assumed since it was an 1898 model that it had the 1898 sight. I was wrong. I was a complete noob to Krags then.

It arrived a day or 2 before I got my rifle back from the gunsmith, so I put a coat of boiled linseed oil on it because I assumed I had the right handguard.

It served the Nazis, even if they didn't mark it. These conversions began in 1934. Some went to Spain with the Condor Legion, where they were left behind and later refurbished by the Spanish. I think yours is most likely a WW2 souvenir if it's all-matching.

Look on the sight base, it'll be marked "s/42K" (1934) "s/42G" (1935) or just "s/42" for 1936-later. Mauser made the sights, and the Wehrmacht arms depots retrofitted the rifles, but not necessarily in the same year the sight is dated.

How do I find out more info about the rifles? Like value and stuff like that. GunBroker seems inconclusive.

Look at finished auctions on GB? Basically try to find out what people are actually paying, for milsurp that's what the value is.
