What are my options and pros/cons?

Looking for a semiauto rifle in a full size cartridge that delivers accuracy to hit man size targets at 300-500yds.

The new Galils appeal to me even if the 2k gives pause. Obviously FALs and even garands are options. There's SCAR in .308 and civilian version of HK 417. Not looking for a race gun AR10. I'm willing to trade some precision for reliability. What's /k's choice?
>>
>>34300207

Galil Ace .308 has been getting very solid marks. I think it's a better use of money than blowing nearly twice its amount on a SCAR. Very little real gain beyond LRBHO and a smidge of accuracy.

I'd immediately give the Galil Ace the nod for durability though.

My only concern is how nice magnified optics would hold up on it given how much the the rail whips around.
>>
>>34300207
Not OP, but is the VEPR in .308 any good? The single stack mag seems to be kind of irritating but maybe it can be modded for FAL or SCAR mags?

Anything that will hold 2-3 moa will do then.
>>
>>34300301
i have one in 20'' and i do enjoy it. and it actually takes double stack mags.

mags will be expensive tho
>>

Very good.
>>34300301
>The single stack mag seems to be kind of irritating
That's only vepr54r rifles, really no point in getting one in 54r any more because of that and other reasons.
Maybe the reason double stack 54r doesn't work in an rpk receiver is the reason the psl has such different parts, despite being very rpk-ish at first glance. But everything is longer and heavier in it.
>>
>>34300207
you can get a lower end ar10. fucker will shoot good and not be very expensive

They're brilliant. I own one, and it's a very comfy to hold, and shoots accurately.

>single stack mag
Mine uses double-stacks.
AFAIK, only the 7.62x54R variants use single-stag magazines.
>>
>>34300391
What about the Super Veprs in 54R with those monte-carlo stocks? I can get one right now for a decent price. Display model with only 50 shots through it.

>>34300351
>>34300391

Is there an advantage to a Galil .308 over a Vepr .308 then? What are the pros and cons of the 2?

Because I know a SCAR 17 is way outside of what I'm willing to pay, and I know nothing about the FAL other than century's versions are shit.
>>
>>34300320
yep. I don't need sub moa.

You honestly can't go wrong with the 54r either. If we're talking a DMR-type weapon, the single stack mags and 10rd upper limit isn't the end of the world, and you get a much better/more predictable cartridge for that small inconvenience.

I love mine, the BDC in my POSP 6x32 is calibrated for the round I actually fire, and with a 20" barrel I can pull consistent 1-1.5 MOA groups with a setup that cost me $1200 w/ optic.

If you're spending north of that, an AR-10 with a fluted bull barrel will pull sub-MOA groups without breaking a sweat, and you can build one for the same price as the Galil ACE. A good AR-10 is anything but a "race gun" and is just about the closest thing you can get to the spiritual successor to the G3SG1 or the PSG-1.

And if you're looking to spend scar 17 money, get pic related and proceed to never leave the house because you're too busy fondling it and touching yourself.
>>
>>34300435
Wild guess would be that Galil's parts and mags would be easier to acquire. Especially in the EU, good Vepr mags are almost unobtainium / cost a fortune. I know yank firms make their own for relatively cheap tho'.
>>
>>34300207
Honestly, I've recently been shooting with a dude who's gotten a Panther Arms .308 AR pattern. It's surprisingly accurate, and while we've only had the opportunity to go out to 100 yards thus far, it's been performing incredibly well at that distance. Basically it outperforms his shooting, and I'm able to shoot within roughly a basketball sized hole at that distance, which is fucking superb for my lacking skill level.

They're not all that expensive, and mostly everyone has familiarity with the weapon platform, so that'd be my suggestion. Plus you can get a wide range of accessories on the cheap.
>>
>>34300452
Fuck. I've been eyeing one out in .308 but this one in 54R has just been taunting me for months.

It'll mostly be a pig gun for me.

>>

Once again. Do it.

You have no idea how much more fun 54r is from a semi-auto than 308. It never gets old.

It's a Vepr Hunter sorry. I don't think Supers came in 54R? It doesn't have the thumbhole grip.
>>
>>34300207
Literally any working battle rifle will hit a man sized target at 500 yards.
>>
>>34300484
Supers did come in 54R, but they're incredibly rare. I've seen a few images of them bouncing around the web, but from what I understand, they never left Russia.

For the people in this thread talking about the 54r, ive had fairly good results woth my veprnov. It averages 1.25-1.5" groups and isnt unheard of gettin 1" with either heavy grain winchester(idk why it likes thay ammo) and sellier and bellot match with my 4-8x32 posp. I fitted a AKT in there which i wouldnt reccomend its just too light even with a dampener spring and single stage trigger is eh. The mags from csspec require fitting and for 50 a pop idk. If your willing to drop the cash for the knock off dragunov id say go for it bit really your better off getting the .308.

I love my psl ..take the 3k you would spend on a Tigr and get ammo since the premium for the dragunov is only because it's rare I'm pretty sure it has a short stroke recoil for quick follow up shots but except for that he had no accuracy increase for thousands of dollars more

That's a nice looking Vepr. R8 mine plz.

What do you think of the SVD clone stockset? I don't mind the look, but I like the ergos of my late stock Vepr furniture enough that I don't really feel the need to swap it out.

As for ammo, for some reason I've shot my most consistent, tightest groups with shitty MFS 174 grain FMJ. I guess the Vepr just likes a heavier bullet.

So the furniture is lighter makeing the recoil mean as fuck. Its my russian tsundere raifu now. Keep it orignial. I think the heavier barrels have something to do with it but i agree veprs prefer heavy grain pills.

Ill add the stocks from rhinewood (ehere mine is from) come unfinished. I finished mine with dye and boiled linseed oil to bring out the stripes im the tiger maple. Its been ageing well and looks even better now. But its more work then ypu think if anyone wanted to put svd furniture on their vepr.

>>34300207
Get a smith and wesson m&p 10. Remove the retarded gas block, handguard, and muzzle brake. Put on your favorite furniture, and throw on a sei muzzle brake. Get a decent FFP scope, like a swfa HD 3-9. Get a sling set up, and some magazines.

And purchase some of the following ammo.

1x box of federal/american eagle 150gr
1x box of 147 or 149gr federal m80
1x box of remington core lokt 150gr
1x box of 168gr hornady match
1x box of federal 168gr gold medal match

This is the general rule of thumb, ~150gr and below are for sub 300yds, 168gr is for sub 600, and 175gr is for sub 1000yds.

Heavy grain bullets, anything above 170gr, will wear out the barrel faster.

Use the match ammo for shots that require tight groups, and use the 147-150gr for practice ammo.

I listed those specific brands because they have the best quality control of commercial ammo, so once you find which practice ammo and which match ammo your rifle likes, you can just stock up on those.

The barrel of the rifle is chrome, so DO NOT let any bore cleaner with ammonia sit longer than 15min. It will eat the steel under the chrome.

DO NOT EVER use a stainless steel brush in the barrel, and NEVER use anything more abrasive than a nylon brush to clean the crown of the barrel. Both these things will fuck with the barrel and screw your accuracy.

Try not to run your gun dry. Use some sort of lubrication on the action.

You can get a smith and wesson for around $800. Its the cheapest, lightest 308 rifle out there.
>>
So any AR-10 on the market, a VEPR, Browning BAR/FN FNAR etc etc.

The BAR DBM looks pretty sweet imo and the BAR line is pretty well proven at this point. I may have to pick one up for my as a general purpose hunting rifle 6lb 10oz is pretty fucking nice. Jeff Coopers corpse is jizzing

>I'm willing to trade some precision for reliability. What's /k's choice?
Can't go too wrong with a vepr308. Pic related doubles pretty well in either role you mentioned in the subject. Easy to scope and has a nice comfortable folder stock that makes it pretty small too, except it won't fold with the scope on. I think it's worst flaw accuracy wise is the trigger, not great.
>that delivers accuracy to hit man size targets at 300-500yds.
Not much that can't do that, even with irons so long as the target is pretty visible.
>>34300685
Not really sure that counts as a civilian variant for the thread, but mine's a great shooter.
But yeah, svds are a novelty for people with more money than me. But plenty of people could probably laugh off a few thousand bucks.
>>
>>34302423
Came here to say this. Have VEPR in .308, 0'd out to 350yrds or so. Does phenomenally well at range, out of a 16" barrel to boot.
>>
>>34302528
I've shot a lot of things out to 400, but not the 308 vepr yet.
I'm sure it'll do just fine once I finally get my steel set up later this year.
>>
>>34300207
Anything .308 or 6.5 creedmoor with an 16.5-18 inch barrel (unless you want to reach out further).
If you want cheap I'd go a FAL.
