Russia has never used uniform VLS cells for their missiles, the Gorshkov has 16 VLS cells for Oniks or Klub missiles, and 32 for S-350 or quad packed 9M100 missiles, and two CIWS systems on top of that. The 052D has 64 standardized VLS cells, which can hold either a Chinese ASROC, a single surface to air missle, a single ASM or LACM, in addition to CIWS systems. All while being 3,000t heavier.

We have a better surface fleet than Russia due to the strategic needs and geography of China, but Russian subsurface combattants are superior to ours. Something like the Yasen or even the Oscar-class are things that the PLAN dreams of.
