Please do not ruin an old genuine Jezail like that, they are relics and should be treasured.

Rather, find a custom stock-maker and ask them about having one made, it can certainly be done, and you could have it properly made to fit your Tikka, as opposed to an original Jezail stock which I promise you won't fit, but also which might be in a weak condition from centuries of hard use.

You know why I like the flintlock?

The lock on it went in in the first EIC anglo afghan war. Was wiped out. They were told by the afghans they could leave their candon and march home in surrender but the afghans being afghans butchered them, men, women, kids Lock taken and fitted in Jezail.

In the second anglo afghan war the brits sent the Irish. The grand bazaar in kabul was destroyed and every fruit tree had its bark removed, turning Afghanistan from the land of gardens to a complete desert. The jezail was brought back as a trophy of what happens to mudslimes.

The attacks on the column started almost immediately. Barely had they left the cantonment before the deadly jezails began taking their toll on stragglers and isolated parties. The onslaught only worsened as the Afghans gained in confidence as the British left the relative security of their base. Afghan horsemen drove off baggage animals, unarmed camp-followers were mercilessly preyed upon. As the poor unfortunate camp-followers sought sanctuary amongst the soldiers, they only helped disorganise the formations and make effective defence of the column even more difficult. The whole sorry column only made five miles that first day, but the snow was already blood-red from the slaughter. Stragglers staggered into the makeshift camp until late into the night. Needless to say, the freezing cold temperatures plummeted yet further during the night and nearly all the tents had been lost in the day's pillaging. What shelter could be provided was offered to the wives and children. Many of the men who had been forced to sleep in the snow froze to death during the night. The first 24 hours had been horrific enough, but there was still another week of travelling to go!

Sniping continued all the next day and more attacks were made on the precious few remaining artillery pieces. By the end of the day, they only had 3 pieces left. At midday, Akbar arrived claiming that he would guide them and provide for their safe passage through the passes ahead. He even chastised them for leaving before they were supposed to the day before. He said that he was not in control of all the tribes in the area and requested that Elphinstone stop his column whilst he negotiated with the next tribe on the route through the passes. Unbelievably, Elphinstone agreed to these demands too. He even agreed to hand over three further hostages to show good faith. The British had barely covered 10 miles and now faced another night in the open.

Akbar's promised escort did not show up the next morning, so the British set off through one of the narrowest parts of the passes. Worse was to follow as it became clear that not only had Akbar failed to negotiate a route through tribal lands, he had almost certainly warned the Afghans to be ready to ambush and attack the British. The sniping and attacks were more fearsome than ever. Some 3,000 died this day alone including many women and children.


Despite the obvious signs of treachery, Elphinstone entrusted Akbar a further time the following day. Akbar offered to 'protect' the wives and children of British officers along with some of the wounded officers. Some nineteen further hostages were handed over but it did not buy any relief from the onslaught. The ambushes and sniping continued throughout the day. By nightfall, there were only 750 soldiers left alive. Some two-thirds of the camp followers were dead too

Revenge

"Pollock's army, which was widely termed the "Army of Retribution", meanwhile advanced from Jalalabad. The army consisted of four brigades, one of which was made wholly of British troops. It numbered about 8,000 men in total. After a sharp engagement on 13 September, they defeated some 15,000 tribesmen deployed by Akbar Khan at the Tezin Pass, and the way to Kabul was clear. Pollock's troops came across many skeletons and unburied bodies from Elphinstone's army and, in spite of orders from Ellenborough and Pollock to show restraint, they committed many savage reprisals against villages and their inhabitants. Pollock reached Kabul on 15 September, two days before Nott.

As the British advanced, the hostages in Akbar Khan's hands were treated less severely than previously, although they were moved to Bamian to keep them out of reach of the British armies. Nott was urged to send cavalry to rescue the hostages, but he declined to do so (possibly as a result of a minor disaster on 29 August, when his cavalry had suffered heavy losses in a mishandled attack). Instead, Pollock sent Qizilbashi irregular cavalry under Richmond Shakespeare (his Military Secretary) and infantry under Brigadier Sale to rescue them. They found that when news of the Afghan defeats reached their guards, the hostages, including Sale's own wife, had negotiated their own release in return for payments. In all, thirty-five British officers, fifty-one private soldiers, twelve officers' wives and twenty-two children who had been taken hostage by Akbar Khan were released.

A detachment from Pollock's army laid waste to Charikar, in revenge for the destruction and massacre of an irregular Gurkha unit there the previous November. Finally, Pollock ordered the historic covered bazaar of Kabul to be destroyed. Although he issued orders that the rest of the city was to be spared, discipline in the army broke down and there was widespread looting and destruction.
