Hey /k/
I'm looking for advice on a first purchase. I can spend around $500-700 and was hoping to get some input or at least get pointed in the right direction. As far as caliber goes, I really liked firing .45 and .40 at the range, but I'm not too picky.

Agreed Glock 21.

Depends on what you need, carry gun? Range piece? Home Defense?

Personally, I rather enjoy the pistols CZ Puts out, the P-09 I have hasn't jammed more than 5 times in the year I've had it, and I've put a thousand rounds of the cheapest fucking steel cased ammunition I could buy, and even then they were because of the shitty ammo and not the gun. Great trigger, good point of aim, and accurate to quite a distance, it also can hold up to 19 rounds in its magazine, and I got mine for about 500 dollars. Main problem I have with it is that it's a bit bulky, grip's a bit wide, if you have dainty hands, and, while it's not a problem for me, it may be for you, it's chambered in 9mm, although there is a version, supposedly, that holds 16 rounds that's in .40 S&W, although I've never actually seen one of those.

Too big to carry, too weak of a caliber for home defense, and too boring to just be a range piece. Basically only good for duty fags.

OP I would get something that is both fun at the range and could in the future be carried concealed. I present to you the hk45
>can take +p 45 all day bby
>can be carried da/sa with decocker only or cocked and locked (with a simple change of a detent plate)
>you can also carry it in light LEM, which is basically single action but with quite a bit of takeup on the initial pull (similar to a two stage trigger) without the need for a safety or decocker
>just as easy to carry as a glock 19
>reliable and durable in every way
>god tier paddles that are easy to use and won't engage when you don't want them to
>pretty ergonomic but you should handle one irl before purchase
>>
>>34291466

forget the 40 that caliber is losing popularity very fast - search for 40 cal decline - because modern ammo 9 = 40 = 45 etc

look at ruger sr9 sr9c 9e

and before buying go to local range take the $100 intro class, you get to shoot several different guns & calibers

Oh shit wrong picture

OP the hk45 (with threaded barrel) is also in use by the navy seals if that means anything to you

I live in NJ, so carry is out. I guess It'll mostly be a range piece. Home defense isn't a primary concern since I live in a safe neighborhood, but I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

In that case you can't beat a 1911 for fun on the range, aesthetics, murricaboner, trigger and ergonomics.

You can get Springfield armory milspecs for a little under 700 pretty easily. That's assuming you have to buy new, there are a lot of good used 1911s on gunbroker.

I looked it up and the mag release looks like its in an awkward position. Is it or am I just ignorant?

Glock-21 for sure
>>
>>34291770
It is if you use your thumb, it's optimized for using your index or middle finger. After even a modicum of practice I think you'll find it just as easy to use as a thumb release, while still being ambi unobtrusive, and much more difficult to engage accidentally.
Don't worry about it though, it's out of your price range and there are better choices for a fun range pistol
>>
>>34291774
He lives in NJ you stupid stupid glockfag. Why would he want to hold a 2x4 at the range when he doesn't even get the capacity? Why would he want an incredibly boring ugly piece if he isn't using it for defensive purposes?
>>
>>34291758
Agreed but it's NOT a newbie gun. Noguns folks can't even understand DA/SA, SAO is not a good first gun unless you are dedicated to practice and research.

OP, my suggestions in cases like these are Beretta M9 or CZ75, and with your budget, the CZ75-SP01. Compared to shooting a Glock, it is effortless. I don't think you can pick a better gun than the SP01 in that price range and I have no intentions of getting one because all my purchases are pragmatic, I.E. they must double as a carry gun.
>>
>>34291758
1911 was the first pistol I ever fired and I fell in love. However, after reading some horror stories and lurking /k/, I figured I'd get an informed opinion
>>
>>34291812
I forgot NJ might have a 10 rnd limit, not sure but if that is the case I'd go for a PPQ .45, Sig P227 .45 or an HK 45 - basically, I'd pick a gun that doesn't need special, neutered mags, something 10+1.
>>
>>34291466
That image reminds me that local gun store is selling a .38 that looks similar to that. Not sure if I want or not.
>>
>>34291813
It was my first gun, but I'm a freaking gun geek so I learned as much as I could to become proficient and confident. Condition 1 is the only acceptable condition for a 1911. This means-

>Round in the chamber
>Full magazine
>Hammer cocked back
>Safety ON

You must practice sweeping the safety off until it becomes second nature. If you are unwilling to keep your 1911 in condition 1 , then you should move on to a different model.
>>
>>34291466
something striker fired in 9mm, Glock 19 or S&W MP etc, 9mm is cheaper ammo so you can shoot more

get HST JHPs for carry
>>
>>34291862
doesn't the 1911 have a grip safety? By not holding it, the weapon is on safe.
>>
>>34291862
>>34291883
It's not for carry
And 9mm is cheaper, but the lack of much recoil impulse makes it decidedly less fun to shoot than 45.
>>34291813
Trust me negro 1911 is a great choice for you. Springfield makes a nice one and it's in your price range. So long as your using quality magazines and your extractor is tuned properly it should be very reliable. SA has good customer service and a good warranty should problems arise.
>>34291812
SP-01 is a great choice for OP as well, so long as he's open to 9mm.

>>34291842
It's a 627 PC, 8 shot 357, first gun I ever fired
>>
>>34291862
If it's not going to be on his person, condition 3 would be acceptable - hammer down, chamber empty, still have 8 rounds of 45. Though IMO OP still needs a dedicated hd rifle or shotgun
>>
>>34291758
>Springfield

PPQ
>>
>>34291958
Yeah but it has a very short and light trigger. Once it's in your hands, that grip safety is null and the thumb safety takes precedence.

I hate grip safeties and I think the Hi-power is a better 1911, although the trigger kind of sucks in comparison.

Some of the old timers would use leather lace or electrical tape to pin the grip safety down. Dunno how I feel about this but there is a semi famous AR15.com story of a guy getting robbed with friends and failed to depress the grip safety properly. He cleared the perceived malfunction only to see a live round eject. I think he carries a G19 now.

Racking a gun in a defensive situation is a terrible idea. You can short stroke it and cause a malfunction or accidentally fire it if your finger is in the trigger when you rack it. Waking up in the middle of the night and responding to a break in can cause stupid mistakes like this.

Again, if you aren't comfortable with condition 1, get a DA/SA with a long trigger pull as the effective safety.
>>
>>34291705
Wtf do you mean .45 is too weak of a caliber for home defense?
>>
>>34291705
>45 too weak for home defense
Wut
>buy this oversized bar of soap with shitty da/sa
Nigga please.
>>
>>34291705
>IMG_1655.jpg
why the fuck do you have that creepy shit in your home
>>
>>34292175
Because in a home defense situatiation you're not confined to what can fit in your waistband. Your doing yourself a disservice if your not using a shotgun or rifle for home defense. 12 gauge > 5.56 >>>>>>>>>> pistol calibers.

>>34292175
>can be carried cocked and locked
>light LEM is actually pretty good as well
>implying it's only a bit taller than a glock 30 and is similar in all other measurements
>bar of soap
Okay I just see your shitposting, have fun with that
