How did they end up on US ship after going missing?
Why would USN/CIA need to go around kidnapping sailors? Were they supposed to be the next Lee Harvey Oswalds or something?
>>
>How did they end up on US ship after going missing?
Their bodies were trapped in flooded compartments after the collision.
They were listed as missing because, while it was likely they were in the inaccessible areas, they could have also gone overboard.
You retard.

How the fuck does a navy destroyer get t-boned by a gigantic freighter? They're made to defeat Chinese submarine torpedoes and it runs into a Filipino oil tanker, like holy shit. The CO probably shot himself once he figured out what happened and that's why he's a casualty

Lets do some math, Anon.

The ACX Crystal displaces 29000 tons and was traveling 12 knots at the time of the collision.

This translates to 407020000 foot-pounds force all crunching its way into the destroyer's soft, tender, lightly-armored above water superstructure.

By the way, that's equivalent force to what's produced by 263lb of TNT.
>>
>>34290162
You didn't tell me why one of the most agile warships in the world with top-tier electronic detection systems, radar, 15 people on the bridge, constant communication with the navy, japanese coast guard, civilian controllers etc was rammed by a glacial mountain of a ship that couldn't be missed by a rowing boat. There never should have been a collision in the first place

Incompetent retards who would be cashiered out of the service the moment they stepped foot on a ship. Apparently if anything happens ever even though it was completely preventable and two dozen people should have been working together (as per their job descriptions and salaries) to avoid it it's completely fine because DUDE RANDOMNESS LMAO IT WAS AN ACCIDENT XDD. You're right, it did happen, but that's not an excuse and the specific parameters of this incident (a top of the line navy destroyer capable of 30 knots getting tboned by a cargo ship) + 7 deaths mean that heads will roll, as it should be.
>>
>>34290313

My brain regarding this matter immediately jumps to the Chinese and Russian incidents where the two captains of each vessel literally said, "You move." And then the other said, "No, you move." Over and over until they smashed into one another. At least there no one died and it could be paraded as nationalism and not some massive ego fueled fuck up. The captain on the Destroyer probably said, "We're the US Navy, fuck off." And the cargo ship captain probably said, "I am bigger than you, you fuck off." until they collided.

I cant imagine going outside must be that pleasant, meaning that you spend more and more time inside. I did not avoid the Fitzgerald, the Crystal was most likely running autopilot. After the collision, the autopilot turned the ship back on its original course. Then after 15 minutes, the crew intervened and steered back to the location of the accident.

It's a shame that those sailors had to die, especially considering it could have been prevented so easily. If that destroyer had been properly armoured all it would have needed after the crash would have been a new coat of paint.

Simply wrong. A container ship with that much mass would also have damaged a significantly heavier armored ship.

And why would up-armor your destroyers to make them more expensive and slower for an incident that shouldn't have happen in the first place.

Ramming other ships has always been a part of naval warfare, because it's effective.
Armoring the ships is counter productive because any missile it'd face in actual combat could destroy whatever armor it had anyways, so they chose maneuverability.

That's not how the colregs work at all. A ship has radar, AIS, binoculars and radio, all for the purpose of avoiding collisions like this. Both the navy ship and the container vessel fucked up in pretty much the worst way possible.

>>
>>34290751

I think they got crushed, the damage on the hull seems too high for flooding.
>>
>>34289236
>How did they end up on US ship after going missing?
It happened in the middle of the night. Most of the crew was asleep except for the people on watch. Those people on watch were probably shitbags who were not minding their stations and not paying attention because it's the middle of the night and 'nothing ever happens in the middle of the night'.
The cargo ship hit two berthing areas where everybody else was asleep. Those people were sleeping, got rocked hard as hell out of their racks. The people who weren't unconscious were dazed as hell. The ones who died were probably knocked out or were too slow and got locked in a flooded compartment. It's a shitty way to die.
>>
>>34290751
Depending on the hole size, the compartment probably flooded too quickly. It was also the middle of the night so everyone was fast asleep too. Since it's a berthing below the waterline, it's accessed by a watertight hatch like pic related. While underway, the hatch is usually shut and only the small, round scuttle is open for traffic. As soon as general quarters is called (like right after a collision) material condition "zebra" is set and that scuttle is shut to prevent the spread of fire, smoke etc throughout the ship. If the sailors were knocked unconscious or power was lost to the berthing and they couldn't find the hatch in the dark, the hatch wouldn't be opened until the repair party investigators came to assess the damage.
>>
>>34290777
Nice trips, but there was damage below the waterline too. What's visible in pictures is where the bow impacted. Underwater, these ships have what's called a "bulbous bow" almost like an old trireme and that's likely what struck below decks.

>>
>>34290863
They likely did. When general quarters is called you shut all openings to the ship. The doctrine is to save the ship and the life of everybody else. If you're stuck down there may god help you.
>>
>>34290863

There's a balance between saving a couple of people and not losing the ship.

>>
>>34290850
>>34290846
After the hit, the general quarters alarm would be sounded. All hands would muster at their assigned battle stations and simultaneously set condition zebra(shutting doors, hatches and scuttles to provide the maximum amount of water-tightness) The sailors assigned to repair lockers(designated compartments where firefighting, desmoking, dewatering equipment etc is stored) would dress out in protective equipment and then the repair party investigators from each locker would go through their locker's designated spaces to look for smoke, fire, flooding, busted pipes etc.. once the flooding was located, the space would be electronically isolated to prevent shock and then "dewatering" would begin. Depending on the severity of the flooding, other repair parties might be called in as backup and together they would start pumping the water out of the space and over the side using whatever portable pumps or eductors were on hand. Normally another select group would enter the space to try and stop the leak, though I suspect in this case, with a hull breach like that, all you can do is try to get water out as fast as it comes in. I also suspect they weren't able to dewater as fast as they were taking on water and had to just seal the space til they could limp back to port. That would also explain why the bodies weren't recovered for so long.

>>

We also put photoluminescence tape of everything important like hatches, ladders, etc so it can be found in the dark. Red colored lights are supposed to be on at all times and this keeps the glow in the dark stuff charged. sleep very lightly, keep a PFD and a waterproof flashlight within arms reach of you rack (i did this). some people literately had emergency bug out bags in their lockers

Also there is usually glow in the dark exit tape with arrows all over so you can find your way if disoriented. I always blind folded new guys on our boat and had them memorize the way to the outside of the boat for just such a situation.

Also in our damage control classes we were taught that if where was a hole in the ship and we ran out of objects to stuff into it, and there were dead bodies, you can stuff bodies in the hole to save the ship as a last resort.

With fires, if there are injured that cannot be immediately moved, sometimes you need to kick the bodies out of the way to get to the fire, somebody has the specific job of getting bodies and rescuing, everybody else has a different specific job to make sure the ship has the greatest chance of survival.

>>34290923

You have to remember in these cases that the safety of the ship and the rest of the crew trumps the safety of a few crew that might possibly maybe be alive in a damaged location. You can seal it off and condemn a handful of guys or not seal it and condemn a boat load.

Mostly things like chem lights, emergency snacks/MREs, water bottles, those mylar blankets, survival knives, sunblock, commercial dye markers, basically things to get seen, not die from hypothermia, and not die from starvation or dehydration

They were for the event of abandoning ship after all.

emergency drills are well rehearsed, move to a designated area in a designated direction on a designated side of the ship, opening and immediately closing all doors, hatches, and scuttles as you do so. You might be the first or the last person to go through a door, but you close it all the same.

Is automatic collision warning a thing?

I alsways thought that the radar would say closest point of approach and then the bridge wold determine course of action (in extreme cases say brace for impact over the intercom) sometimes captains like to play chicken too, it could have been one of them said fuck it Ive got places to go, aint no way im moving for some boat

It could have also been one of them was not displaying proper night time light signals

someone could have been scanning a different area on high level zoom and forgot to zoom back out, and the ship was never seen on radar

Have you ever been in a position of power or decisiveness in your life? It's all true, if you were a babysitter and the kid drowned in the pool while you weren't looking you can't just say it was a random act of god, more likely the father comes home and beats you to death with a fireplace poker.

Not sure if already in widespread use but there are several patents for maritime collision warning systems.
But of course radar and AIS are a great aid to avoid collisions:

preventable accidents, but why have lights on a boat that just cost more,

Radar images can be skewed by how high off the water the radar mast is, that's why you still need competent lookouts (who don't sleep on watch)

Some dipsit e-2 might have been responsible, but the captain signs off that the E-2 was compentant to perform any task assigned, therefore it was the captains call to let that E-2 do his job, so it's the captains fault, also captains get a special "command pay" on top of their paycheck as compensation for the responsibility.

ITs like if you are at the range, and you let your 10y/o shoot your gun, and the kid shoots other people, its YOUR FAULT because you incorrectly assumed the child was competent to use the firearm

Probably egressing the last man from a space after he was unable to control the flooding and it got too high over his head.

I have heard of actual flooding incidents where someone accidentally opened a sea chest (it was right next to an identical plate for a void or some other system- genius engineers) and almost sank the ship. people tried to fix it until the entire space flooded. fortunately ,there were divers on board and were able to dive into the space and seal off the hole.

The darkie was caught with a jelly donut in its footlocker so they are jettisoning it out to sea for the good of the ship.

In terms of training and experience, This is comparable, a 17y/o e-2 with a few months in is not likely to be as well versed in nautical operations as an 0-5 with 10 years. Boot camp might prepare someone for some of the operations, but specific scenarios are taught on the ship over a tour of duty

It mainly consisted of making things worse.
There was one time where there was an avgas leak, so some schmuck turned on the ventilation system, which made the whole carrier fill with avgas fumes, which promptly ignited because IJN ships were a fire hazard. They also had bad habits of leaving fuel barrels and hoses lying around, so their decks became infernos if they got strafed.

So it was a head-on situation? Was no one looking out the window?
>>
>>34290863
Yep. Some ships have hydraulically operated watertight doors. In case of flooding, the captain can shut them remotely from the bridge. Those doors are heavy and are operated by ±300 bar hydraulic oil. When they close, an alarm bell rings, because the door will pinch your arm off if it gets stuck between the door when it closes.
Deciding to close them in case of emergency is never easy but necessary. Sacrifice a few to save the many.

I doubt it, those destroyers have some of the most advanced radars. It's more likely they were under EMCON and active radar was shut off.
But every commercial ship now has an AIS transponder which permanetly sends out position, course and speed over ground etc. - even under EMCON they should have received that.

There are fairly convincing videos on YouTube about many things. If you pull enough 'alternative facts' out of your ass and pack it into a seemingly sound story enough gullible people will believe you.
Since most people can't be bothered or have the means to check the validity of the presented arguments those conspiracy theories live on for ages - but that doesn't make them anything more than fiction.

And now consider for a moment Sandy Hook happened exactly as officially reported. One of your children was murdered and on top of that people accuse you of being part of a government conspiracy, a liar and actor.
I'd probably want to choke the conspiracy theorists with my bare hands.

So, I was on the collision yesterday. I am the FITZ DCA. I'll put that out there now for everyone. I don't care.
The collision happened around 0130. I remember looking at my watch when I felt the ship do a strange maneuver. It woke me up.
I know that basic damage control saved my ship yesterday. We battled to keep her stable for 19 hours. The first 8 were the worst and fastest of my life.

>>34291708
probably told the people to wear something other than uniforms for the trainer, leave it to the female sailor to wear a white shirt for an exercise involving lots of water and heavy concentration requirements
>>
>>34291732

Sometimes water can force doors shut, thats why there is planning on which direction doors open. You want the water to press the door closed when its a space that you wouldn't normally be in. This works against you when you are trying to open a door to a flooded space, thats when people die

Not all spaces have more than one exit, most only have one. Places where fires might break out may have an emergency escape hatch.

Concussions and impacts can warp door frames making doors inoperable, te round shape of doors helps with the structural integrity, but deformation is likely, sometimes you need to stuff anything you can find into door holes to stop flooding (mattresses, hats, anime body pillows, etc.)

is this not normal? on canadian frigates, they issue you those, and if you leave canadian or US waters they order that you have to have it on you at all times. it's called a "war belt" and has a PFD and an entire ship abandonment suit on it. more permanent people also get flash gear and safety goggles and shit like that for action stations. even just puttering around the coast for PR stuff and routine training, they recommend you put it in your rack in the little space just ahead of your bed and to never lock it up.

>>34290974
lots and lots of drills. idk about the US but here in canada we're also issued "Know Your Ship (KYS) Books" that are basically just little map booklets, but the goal is to get some colored pencils and tour the ship to color in where all the emergency gear is and how best to get the fuck out of your usual hangouts in case of emergency. the idea is that having to fill in the map yourself before it becomes usable is supposed to better engrain where stuff is. And canadian ships are fairly small, so it's definitely all do-able. there's also a section for signatures from more senior personnel (usually engineers) that attest that you understand the various systems of the ship that you care about; where all the firefighting gear is, where the firemain runs and how to isolate it, the various hazards in spaces, how to reach people without running around and doing it in person, etc.
