I've kind of been wanting to get a Type 99 Japanese milsurp rifle recently, they're about $150-$200, but they use fairly expensive 7.7 Jap ammo.

Anybody have some experience with them and know if they're worth the price for fun?

Yeah the last ditch ones are what I've been looking at, they're really the only affordable ones. I honestly have a thing for abnormal/unique ammo types, which is one of the things I like about the Type 99, but yeah the prices are kind of crazy. I've seen smaller boxes at something like $2.50 per round.

Gunbroker has a big pack of milsurp 7.7 jap for pretty cheap though if you want to buy in bulk.

The outside appearance is a little deceiving. There's like 8" of rust at the muzzle end of the barrel. Ive been scrubbing the shit out of it with CLP and wire brushes. Still havent gotten it all off. Im gonna switch to Hoppes 9, but I need some more .30 cal brushes cause the ones I had are fucked

The $1k is for your top of the line all matching, excellent condition, mumed, original sling and of a harder to find manufacturer or series. Most would be around $700ish otherwise.

Then you have ones like Hoten made Type 99s that a completely stripped barreled action sold for $2k. You may think that is silly too, but they are that rare.

Well, Tokyo Arsenal never made Type 99s and an early Jinsen with all of the early features would be rare. Most Jinsens are very late war rifles, and some are transitionals.

Even your typical Nagoya Arsenal with all the bells and whistles, matching and mummed will be over $500 usually.

What would cause an sks to go single shot only? Its a yugo and I've made sure the valve was int he open, but it still doesn't seem to be getting gas for some reason. I already cleaned the dogshit out of the ports.

Rubber O-ring? This may be the problem then kek. theres no ring I've seen.
>>
>>34287512

It's been a few years since I did it to mine but if you disassemble the gas system there will be a little rubber o-ring on the end of the gas cut off valve. You can also use 18 gauge stainless steel wire to act as an o-ring if it's missing. That's what I did. I searched for the fix online a few years ago when I was working on mine.

depends on the bore. a matching excellent condition one goes for like $1,000, so maybe $5-700 would be realistic? check gunbroker for similar examples and price accordingly or just throw it up on gunbroker for 99 cents and let the market work
>>
>>34289144
that's kinda the problem. There are rarely any on gun broker. From what I understand there are supposedly only about 20k in existence today, but I can't remember where I saw that.

It's so niche that really no one outside of a swedish collector would be interested. Also besides the bolt there are a number of very uncommon features so it's somewhat rare even in the M94 community

NJ or NC. Moving shortly. If you're interested my particular rifle has no import marks and the stock is not cut for a stock disc. Instead there is a blank brass disc fitted onto the comb of the stock. It's difficult to find information about that.

Bolt is not matching and rifle has not been fired since I bought it about 3 years ago

Yes, rebluing it will hurt collector's value. As for how much collector's value the rifle has depends its exact model (Mosin-Nagant m/91 came three variations - infantry rifle, dragoon rifle and cossack rifle), condition, markings and possible special features.

If you want to figure out its value post some photos showing rifle and its markings (most importantly the ones above chamber) to Collector's Forum at Gunboards.

This place is full of autists who think that all Mosin-Nagants are the same re-furbed Soviet m/91-30 garbage.

If you reshape your own brass and buy cheaper .45-70 bullets to paper patch, it'll be around $1.50-1.75 a round for the first shot. As long as you take care of the brass, you can shoot for less than a dollar a round. The actual time cost is more significant, as it's not as simple as just dumping black powder in a case and seating a bullet. IV8888 did some videos on reloading for .577/.450 that are really helpful.

Well they did have a slight change in the receiver design that unit armorers fixed. If your rifle is a G or H series it probably had this notch cut into the back of the receiver. The changed it and the end cap design so the end cap can't fall off.

Shooting my m39 this weekend and the recoil bolt nut walked out on me, the bolt stayed in place and I don't see any wood cracking under it.

I stopped shooting it, found the bolt and got it home. Found that the tips of two 54r rounds worked great to get it back on.

Yes. Most of the pieces in it I still use. The only thing I'd change out is the balance scale. While it's definitely accurate enough, I just find it too slow. A good electronic scale is faster, which is something I like to have when I have 35 different calibers to reload.

Guys, I fucked up, I put my Mosin bolt back together after cleaning, screwing the firing pin into the decocking piece to be exact, and the damn thing got stuck halfway through. I tried using the bolt connector to screw it out but it wouldn't work. I tried smacking it with a hammer and I fucked up the prongs on the connector, now he firing pin isn't flush with the cocking piece and, while I was able to put to bolt back together, it failed the protrusion test by like a millimeter.

So is my bold fucked guys? Anyone else had this happen to them? I'd hate to have to buy a whole new bolt assembly

99% chance they are not original at all. If it's a rifle it will have a 30 inch barrel if a carbine they had a 22 inch barrel. If they are carbines yet have a pinned rear band they are cut down rifles, or at least the stock. Carbine stocks had bands retained by a spring. Carbine sights have a C stamped on them too. There is like a bagillion different variations and a bagillion different sights for those variations.

But really, you need to do a lot of research before you purchase anything. Not just ask a bunch of strangers a quick rundown on a complicated subject.

Carcano's are cheap and neat but their ammo is pricey and hard to come by. Better collector guns due to their role in WWII IMHO but not good if you want to shoot.
>>

>muh hard to find ammo
This meme really needs to die. It's a meme that plagues many milsurps. I can go to my local cabelas and buy 6.5 Carcano ammo for .85 cpr and shoot reasonably accurately with it. The same Cabelas also carries 7.65 Argentine. .303, 7x57, 8x57, 7.5 Swiss and .30 Carbine for the same or in the case of .30 Carbine its less than 50cpr. Also if you aren't a bumbling retard you can order pretty much any Milsurp caliber online. Even shit like 6.5 Dutch or 7.35 Carcano

My Czech-made Turkish-used Vz.98/22 can do 2MOA or better with surplus ammunition. I daresay the 98/22 is the best buy of any 8x57 Mauser rifles; no-one seems to care about them, but they were impeccably constructed and despite many years of conscript use in Turkey they seem to remain very accurate.

I would skip the Type 30s until you have a more full collection personally. No sense in spending extra for rare guns when you're early on, that's why I've been mostly focusing on sub-$500 guns so far. Even though I drool over a bunch of $1000+ guns.
>>
>>34301469
Man, that's a bunch of bullshit. Buy whatever you find interesting and can afford. If you want a Type 30 now, buy it fucking now.
>>
>>34300655
The only German-made Turkish Mausers in 8mm are the Gew.98s purchased/given to Ottoman Empire as war aid during WW1. All Ottoman-contract smokeless Mauser rifles were in 7.65x53mm, and were re-built by Republic of Turkey in 8x57mm. The workmanship on these rifles should be considered more Turkish than German; serviceable but not exemplary.
>>

Picked up my first Moist Nugget a year ago from Classic's sale on those hex-recievers

Would love to mount a PU scope but I don't have a local gunsmith that could help me out with drilling and tapping the mount into the hex-receiver.

I really (REALLY) want to find a SVT-40 that won't break the bank on me. (max $1000 United States shekels in a perfect world) thats in shooting condition.

I know a lot of hate happens with the "bubba" of ww1-ww2 firearms and such. But I don't see why not put a traditional scope on the rifle. Irons are great on my Mosin. If I wanted to bubba my moist up I would turn it into a SBR with a PDW chasis

A bubba humping meant to replicate the Swedish Gevar m/40. In 1939 Sweden purchased some Kar.98k rifles in 7.92x57mm for use as light anti-tank rifles. This was quickly determined to be foolish, but to keep the rifles from going to waste they were re-chambered to 8x63mm —the standard Swedish heavy machine gun cartridge used in Sweden's m/36 heavy machine gun— and issued to those troops in the heavy machine gun units.

Finding one sub $1,000 is hard, but not necessarily undoable.

My first SVT was a Finn capture I got at an auction. It ran me $1150 which was just fine with me.

My second one was a mixmaster. Russian capture 1940 Poldosk receiver that the previous owner had a gunsmith install a mint surplus barrel on, as well as a repro mount with original an Kazan SVT scope. Collector value is minimal but it makes the perfect shooter in terms of performance and I don't feel so bad taking it out to the field. That was only $950 shipped.

Most were sold to Israel, where they were probably re-built into 7.62NATO like so many other Kar.98k. Those in the US seem to be in very good condition and I would bet they were first sold to civilians in Sweden before being rounded up and exported with tons of other Swedish Mausers during the Silver Age of Milsurp in the late 1980s.

As far as worth goes.... yours is probably a 400 gun. It is fairly rough, which is expected (they were all naval and colonial service rifles) and is missing the upper handguard. I paid 650 for mine but it's a tad nicer.
