My movie gun - wanted a lightweight takedown rimfire rifle since I saw Day of the Jackal in the early 70's, so I finally got around to making one.

A fine piece of cinema. Unlike the Bruce Willis catastrophe of the same name. The author actually sued to try and block that use but apparently failed.

thats cool as hell, but how do you keep it sighted in when you take it apart?
>>
>>34279312
The scope mounts are aluminum rings from an old Manfrotto tripod, cut down and carved into tapered slots in the bottoms. There are two steel wedges with rounded ends fixed to the steel main tube, the tapers matching the cutouts in the rings. It's a simple friction fit. A small bump on the scope with the heel of my hand sets it firmly enough for the first shot, which is right on zero, and that first shot slightly snugs it into place. It takes a firm bop with my hand to release it towards the rear when I'm done shooting.
>>
>>34279513
Oh, and the scope is a late 1950's Weaver B4, pretty tough steel body and strong wire reticle, so bumping it isn't a problem. I've fired hundreds of subs through this rifle and it never goes out of adjustment.

Takes a few years to acquire skills anon, that's life. When I was a kid of 20 I didn't have the foggiest notion how to build a firearm. In my fifties I started poking around at it, a new hobby after a bunch of decades of doing lots ofnother things. I'm vastly more skilled at some of those other things - this rifle and a few others and some pen guns are rather humble as gunsmithing goes. But it's fun, and I'm getting better at it. Might even splurge on a small mill sometime. That would make things easier. So would a proper sized lathe with threading capacity.
>>
>>34277616
Can you please explain what you used to make it? Did you base it off certain other guns? Do you have any books that provided insight and if so what were they?
>>
>>34280623
From the hardware store:

- thin-walled steel plumbing pipe
- steel rod
- 1" 6061 seamless tubing for the suppressor tube
- a few bolts

From eBay:

- 10mm ID, 12mm OD carbon fiber tube
- 7075 1" stock for the end plugs on the can
- 7075 0.875" stock for the K baffles
- Weaver vintage scope ($40 including shipping)

From my LGS:

- Redman 1:16" barrel liner, cut to 10" and crowned, chambered
- subsonic ammunition in .22lr

From my scrap boxes:

- steel lamp tubing for the hollow stock (holds 11 rounds)
- 1/2" 6061 tube for the T end on the stock
- black delrin
- stainless band clamp for the sear spring
- large nut for the bolt stop collar
- brazing rod, solder, JB Weld

I'm no doubt forgetting lots, but you get the idea. I started with an idea, made the main tube/barrel assembly, then worked my way forward from there. One solution at a time. Improvising. Like jazz. Every problem has a solution, provided one doesn't paint oneself into a corner. Very nearly did a couple of times but I'm getting better at solving sticky problems.

Total weight is 32oz with one in the chamber and 11 in the stock tube. Balance point is in the middle of the sear spring. Extractor is the least satisfying element, the claw sometimes taking two tries to pull out used brass, especially with uneven loads like Remington Subsonic which sometimes run a bit hot. With CCI or Fiocchi there's no problem.

I've read no books on this, but have read the novel which was fun. Like I said, I've made a few other rifles, this being the fourth. Each one teaches me a number of things. Same with the pen guns. Browsing forums, especially silencertalk, has taught me a lot about making very efficient baffles, so this one is very quiet. Aligning threads is the hardest part with hand taps and dies. I use a tiny TAIG hobby lathe to help with that as much as I can, at least getting close to good alignment, but it's trial and error. Sorry, no blueprints to offer. All I can suggest is learning by doing.

So how the hell did you stumble upon /k/ or rather 4chan in general? Kinda weird to think there are anons older than your own parents.
>>
>>34282923
Stumbled upon. Yup, that describes it. I heard "four Chan" mentioned in a CBC radio story about something to do with troubling but sometimes original and important things happening on the internet. I was intrigued. Think it was mentioned by professor Michael Geist. So I had a look for whatever this place was, saw a lot of CP and traps and ultraviolence etc, then eventually stumbled upon k while looking through the various boards and felt at home here. My son likes some wsg content, though he's scared to visit chans by himself, still just 11 and finds Usagi Yojimbo sufficiently violent for now.

Don't really see Reddit being the place to browse for gatshit. Then again I rarely go on there so I don't even know the community.
>>
>>34283777
Never yet visited Reddit, though I see it mentioned here frequently. Is it some sort of hipster board? Sounds vaguely newsy.

I've hung around on airgun boards, as I enjoy airgun tinkering and competitive shooting. Then on places like silencertalk and nfatalk, though the snarkiness can be a bit much at times. Most of the time actually. Americans can be so... pesky.

>>
>>34284274
Yeah, guilty. That was my 2nd try. First one was more of a 'wand' with a 6" ported barrel and another 6" of cupped washers and spacers. Pretty quiet for a 3/4" tube, but too long to be practical for carrying. More like a mini-baton. In a one-shot situation noise isn't really the issue anyway, it's more about taking that shot out of desperation. And of course if it's a hard contact shot there's little noise anyway.

I've since reshaped the clip as it was prone to falling out of my pocket. Otherwise it's quite a successful build, fairly easily cocked and firing reliably. I use rounds rated for about 1200fps as from the short barrel they give about 900fps with the 40gr bullets, enough to do significant damage at close quarters.

Ah, so aging is disturbing to you at this point, as your self image is still that of a man in his 20's, not yet having accepted that 40 is just a handful of months away... From that perspective 55 must seem ancient. I empathize, as I've not accepted aging well at all. Still often think of myself as a teenager really, though connective tissues and skin texture put the lie to that when I push myself too hard. Elasticity is the first thing to go. Cuts and tendon tears come all too easily beyond 50.

Thank you anon. I'd forgotten the name of that film. Downloading now from TPB. My son will love this. Kurt Russell is one hell of an actor. While completely silly, another of his which is well worth at least one viewing is Big Trouble in Little China.
>>
>>34284543
I've worn the nerd badge with pride since the 1970's, when I realized that being a jock or a rocker or anything else 'cool' usually went along with lower intelligence, the sorts of people with whom I wanted no relation whatsoever. So yeah, I'm a big ol' nerd. My kid says so too. And he should know. Kid's a fuckin' nerd if there ever was one. Teaching himself piano because movie soundtracks are so epic. Playing the hell out of Minecraft. He's going to out-nerd me some day.
>>
>>34284534
Honest question... do you post memes or even find them funny? It's just hard for me to imagine an 40-50 yr old laughing at obscure spurious and fpbp's.
>>
>>34284607
Never made nor posted any meme, but I do find many of them quite funny. In fact as my boy is shifting into an age where reading novels to him at bedtime is not so interesting any more (been through most of Terry Pratchett, and a host of other authors) we've sometimes turned to meme searches on Google on various silly themes. I am also fond of Archer, though after season 6 it really seemed to dry up a little. The Americans is probably my favourite TV, though only watch it via torrents as the TV left my house fifteen years ago. Interesting thinking that all that spy shit was going on while I was going from job to job trying to figure out what I wanted to do for a living.

>>
>>34284694
not the same guy but i have a question too, even though its completely unrelated in any way shape or form to this board

what hopes do you have for your son? do you just want him to be happy no matter what or do you want him to be successful, regardless of happiness?
>>
>>34286044
Wow, deep thoughts. I'll try to be brief (about to go for a bike ride with the little bugger). Happiness is the main one, as I expect it has always been for parents of decent nature. I'm not sure how happy his life can be considering the rapidly deteriorating state of certain global scale elements of society and environmental trends, but part of happiness involves finding interesting things to do, and surviving during this century could well prove to be very, very interesting indeed. To my way of seeing things a life spent watching TV and attending some meaningless job is a life not worth living, grounds for euthanasia really. So I hope for him to have a classically interesting life. Meaningful, if sometimes painful experiences. I hope he survives his first heartbreak, whatever that is. Right now his biggest fear is that I might die, so my mission in that regard is to remain healthy and fit and avoid dying. My own father disappointed me on that one... died at 58, silly man, in an avoidable mishap.

Successful, yes, on his own terms. I hope that he succeeds in being a decent and intelligent being who works for the betterment of those around him, while taking care of his own needs in a balanced way. I hope that he takes risks, but plans them well and survives. I hope he finds a good woman, someone crazy enough to be interesting and intelligent enough to keep him sharp, beautiful enough that his attention doesn't need to wander more than idly. And I hope that when the water and food wars come, when the massive depopulation of equatorial regions results in a vast swarm of desperate humanity acting without intelligence or compassion, that he has found ways to survive.
>>
>>34284496
yes, it is
>>
>>34286207
Thanks oldmanposter. I'm the ripe old age of 22 and since my father and I don't really have these kinds of conversations (plus I'm too afraid of being a disappointment) it gives a little bit of insight. Appreciate it.
>>
>>34286296
I feel ya. My dad was a career drunk. A deeply intelligent but very anxious person whose whole life was pain. His only joy was his kids. Though he rarely found it possible to say so, he did tell us he loved us a few times, and his efforts generally proved his commitment to making us happy. His criticisms were aimed in the same direction, though they were absurd and felt destructive at the time.
>>
>>34286388
Fuckin' hell, it's like we have the same father. Anyway, I'll try not to derail the thread. Have a picture of what I think is a bullpup? I don't know what the fuck to call this thing.

>>
>>34288424
I have to ask, aren't you worried of RCMP busting you?
>>
>>34288439
For a little while I had my second one threaded for a suppressor. But no, that's too silly. The sort of situation calling for deployment of a pen gun doesn't allow time for threading on a can. And because the barrel's so short and that one wasn't rifled, bullets tumbled too much for a small bore in the baffles, the resulting oversized bore making it a bit louder than was worthwhile for the effort. So I popped it in the lathe and removed the threading. They do look kinda cool. But I'll do some thinking and maybe in a couple of years try another pen, going for something utterly innocent looking but highly functional. Maybe even an extractor.
>>
>>34288488
Not really. I'm an upstanding citizen who pays his taxes and does nothing to harm anyone. It's a little hobby is all. Of course if they start doing door-to-door searches I'd worry. Don't think they're going to do that.

Did he keep the tungsten carbide point for the firing pin?

Fucking why? Just want to fuck up the chamber for no reason?
>>
>>34288900
Why not? Does anyone dry fire such a weapon without brass chambered? The impact from the spring is sufficient for reliable firing, but nit sufficient to cut through brass rims into the steel of the barrel. No damage happens in my zipguns unless someone's stupid enough to fire on an empty chamber. Can't see why that would happen.
>>
>>34288988
It doesn't take impact well either, might chip and break.
>>
>>34289098
That comes into play when there are surface flaws - I polish carefully - or when the tungsten is of poor grade - I use good stuff and test thoroughly. My testing has shown it to be more durable than heat treated 01 steel and similar to quality drill bit shanks. In more recent builds I've gone to the drill bit shanks as I've run out of 1/8" carbide drill shanks, but will go back to those when I can find some more electronics manufacturing surplused drills.
>>
>>34289253
surface flaws on the carbide wedge and the brass?

No.
>>
>>34289381
No, I was thinking more surface flaws along the rod. A small scrape on a thin carbide rod can cause a fracture on impacts, similarly to hardened but inadequately tempered tool steels. I've made sure the rods are polished everywhere.

Hey, cool. Unintentional feels boost feels good. I got an amazingly complicated card when I woke up this morning, incorporating folded paper leaves, bamboo, a poem written in the shape of my first initial, even a bit of a gentle jab at my goofy nature. My kid is the best kid ever.

Here's a pic of the four rifles I've built so far. First one is over-scoped, the Burris 2-7x is a bit much so I'll be replacing that with a vintage 4x whenever I find another one on eBay. Second one is a folder, with hollow delrin grip and butt plate each holding a few rounds under threaded end caps. Both those require cocking the striker via a knob at the back. The first one locks the bolt with a fitting on the stock tube, requires loosening that 1/4 turn to open the breech, a bit awkward but it works. Third one was a sort of prototype for the fourth, just working out ideas using a ported airgun barrel - it's not hugely accurate and extraction sucks, but it's quiet and it works okay.
