Okay /k/, I need a gun to go shooting with my mates.
But I live in California, so for ease, I'm limited to local gun stores.
I've currently got a budget of $500, but used is fine.
What should I really look for?
I kind of want a decently powered rifle with a scope rail, that I can later mount one to and use for hunting, but I have no idea there. I'd rather get something that fires a cheap round though, until I can get to where I can reload.
Thing is, one of my mates went recently to go find a shotgun, and paid almost 400, for just an old pump 20ga. So I'm not sure if my budget is enough, but I can always wait for another paycheck.
Or should I just get an ar15 lower, and build from there with online parts? Or can I even do that?
Hunting what exactly?

Deer, wild boar. Nothing bigger around here.

Gay porn star?

Get a cheep Savage Durr rifle in .308 or something. You might find cheap old hunting rifles if you look around local pawn shops.
If you want a semi, get an SKS and rice it out if you want to put optics on it.
>Build an AR
You'd have to track down a Commieforna legal lower and shit, but I guess you can do that if you're patient.

>Only available in California.
What kind of fucking job is Cali Exclusive???
>>34273727
>Cali Exclusive
Lettuce and lettuce accessories.
>>34273727
I definitely want semi-auto. Are SKS rifles with drop mags legal in California? I would guess so unless it has a pistol grip.
>>34273878
Staying in salinas i see.
>>34273497
Find a new job.
Move somewhere with a lower cost of living.

A new job and way out of your shitty state
>>34274060
This is what an SKS looks like when it came out of whatever Slav/chink factory made it. I think the ones in Cali will probably be missing the spring bayonet but otherwise It's got a fixed 10 round mag and no scary salt grip.
>>34274100
Yep
>>34274117
I don't really have any issues with the laws here.
>>34274164
I read some were made to use detachable AK magazines. And others can be converted.
>>34274285
Yes, the SKS-D indeed uses AK mags, but those are rare, more expensive, and ironically a bit less reliable as well. A barebones SKS is perhaps the best all around innawoods rifle, and especially without the bayo it seldom triggers gun-banners.
>>34274453
Oh okay, so anything else to look for? What are the chances the gun stores will just have a working one?
>>34274285
Other salinas guy here. Want to hangout? I want to shoot my AR tomorrow. smoothtaco96 at gmail dot com. I've got an sks to shoot. Just need some ammo too.
>>34274998
Lol am I going to die/be raped?
>>34273216
Good luck finding anything good for less than 500 in california.
>>34274855
SKS in general are everywhere, and tend to be very robust and simple rifles.
Here's an old buying guide I saved from /k/ ages ago.
>>34275023
No. Im a 5 foot 9 guy descended of Mexicans who's friendly, kek. If anything i should be afriad of you.
>>34273216
For that price, I'd say look around for something like a used Maverick 88. You can use slugs and get a scope and it will be alright for hunting.
>>34275044
Should probably be updated. East german sks and albanians are unobtanium
Found this gem when skimming gunbroker:

This is the kinda shit you're gonna want to avoid, OP.
>"a fast and maneuverable firearm in this configuration"
>>34274164
I've got a SKS with the tapco detachable 20 rounders
They work okay but they are kinda annoying to remove and put in because the way the bolt works (bolt has to be open to remove and insert)
The stripper clips and original 10round box mag are probably best but the tapco mags work alright if u REALLY want removable mags
>>34275520
I kinda want the detachable mag so I can just carry multiple mags when target shooting and shit.
>>34273216
If you just want a decent, reasonably-priced shooter that doesn't run afoul of CA laws and that costs under $500, a Savage Axis II or Ruger American Rifle seems like a good choice. Big 5 recently had the Savage on sale for $400. Another $100 will get you a Nikon Buckmasters II on Amazon, which is a nice entry level scope for a remarkably low price.
>>34273216
That has to be the ugliest shit
>>34276562
Stripper clips my man
