There are a lot more interesting variants going for the Type 99, but the Type 38 has a better build quality in general. Strawed pieces and springs, fully milled parts, no stampings besides the dust cover.
The answer is both.

>>34260288
Im not sure if you mean for that specific rifle or any 99. Ive seen it a few times on 38s and im not sure how different they are. It would be neat to have the monopod and aa sights though, il throw a low bid on it and hold of on a 38 for a bit.
>>34260068
Quality and Price > Variant
Get one that is in good condition, preferably all matching with an intact mum. Better yet, try to find one with things like the dust cover, bayonet, sling and cleaning rod.
I prefer the Type 99 in terms of looks, but I went for a Type 38 because it was a way better price and was all matching with an intact mum. No cleaning rod, sling or bayonet though :(
Ultimately I want to own both, and maybe one of the carbine variants too.

If you don't know what the series and manufacturer is I can tell you if you post a pic like this. Does the dust cover match on your rifle?
>>34260037
Mine stove pipes every 25ish rounds.
Took this as a partial trade from my co worker, I sold him an old Ford pickup. Mostly matching, early serial number, with a letter in front of 4 numbers. He said he bought it cheap from a guy 10 years ago and let it sit in his gun cabinet ever since.
Internet said this scope and mount combo is a hit or miss as to whether it holds zero and is worth a shit. Evidently China welded these on before they shipped them to the U.S. I'll try it out next week after I'm back from Chicago to see Metallica.
>>34260388
Im really just looking for a shooter with some doodads as long as its totally functional.
>>34260376
Didnt know the mexicans made a arisaka
>>34260388
Mine is a Nagoya O series like the one you posted. The dust cover is matching as well, which I was pretty damn happy about.
>>34260429
I'm just saying you don't go overboard in what you spend.
And the Mexicans didn't make any Arisakas, but they bought some in 7mm Mauser.
>>34260438
You mean a 27th series? Katakana オ (O)?
>>34260507
Yeah you're, right, it's a 27. I always forgot what numbers coincide with the katakana.
Has anyone ever seen an PCMR Winchester for sale in the US, and if so what did it go for?
>>34260507
What would a fair price be for one these days?
>>34260527
It's pretty simple, actually. It's just the syllable order of the Iroha poem. Except for 49 and 50. That's in hiragana.
>>34260596
For which one? A Mexican Arisaka or just an Arisaka in general? For the former you'll have to bust open a thick wallet.
>>34260600
The former. I have no plans on going after obscure variants for a while.
>>34260596
I don't know, I think the median is around $500. I got my Type 38 for $250 CAD, so patience is key. If you look around at gun shows you can probably find one for a better price than online places like gunbroker.
>>34260107
It's pretty ridiculous actually, its like they don't think anyone does a little bit of research about prices first.
>strippers coming in the mail for my first milsurp I ever got.

>>34260068
6.5 Jap is MUCH easier to find than 7.7. However, type 99s come with a monopod and have GOAT accuracy. In addition, due to the lack of new ammo, no one buys the 99s. It's the same issue with the Fusíl Grâs (shoots an XBOX HUEG 11m cartridge).
>>34260107
And here I thought I overpaid for my mint no4 mk2 at $350 a few years ago.
hey milsurp people. I have a question. how much would a yugo capture k98k be worth? Im debating purchasing that or a type 56 sks.
>>34260597
Okay, that makes sense now. That explains why my Japanese friend started singing when I showed them the O and said "it's a 27 I think, I'm not sure how O means that."
>>34260626
People won't research the going price for these and will just eat them up. I think it has to do with ease of access. Buying from classic is simpler than looking for and bidding on a rifle on GB or finding obscure websites that cater to surplus buyers.
>>34260698
If it makes you feel better I payed $400 for the No.4 Mk1/2 in >>34260107 earlier this year.

>>34266263
That sounds about right, maybe $50 more than some others I've seen. Maybe.
>>34266283
Well I figured put it on armslist for 800 and I'll take a 750 if someone doesn't make it a hassle. It's a cool rifle but honestly that scope has awful eye relief and it's not fun to shoot.
Sweaty Ben also has a K31/43 sniper rifle.
should I hop on this Krag Jorgensen carbine and 80rds for under $450 at my LGS? seems decent condition
>>34266646
is it a legit carbine or a cut down long rifle
>>34266646
Make sure that it's an actual carbine. The sights will have a C stamped on them. The stock will have it's band retained with a spring, not a pi, which was used on rifle stocks. If it's a cut down rifle stock you will see a splice of wood in the barrel channel on the end where they milled into the wood to lighten it. It will have to have the proper Krag front sight too. 99% of Krag "carbines" are just cut down rifles.
>>34266646
Pictures are required. Krags are very tricky.
>>34266668
pretty sure legit carbine, looks a lot like this with different rear sights, and the barrels different
>>34266677
oh, it might be cut down then. it has a replaced stock plate for sure
>>34266698
I have a cut down krag that was supposed to be made to look like a carbine. Cut down or not, still an awesome gun. Ammo is just hard to get for it. I finally got myself 150 rounds of brass and have been loading. If it's in good condition, they're good rifles.
>>34266743
it's definitely sporterized
threaded holes for a scope mount, buttplate replaced with a recoil pad, sights are probably after market
$318 + tax, and the ammo is about $15 each box. also have a Beretta 1934 on layaway, but I could definitely afford both.
should I?
>>34266784
I can't really speak for the value of these when they're sportered, but they're a hell of a lot of fun. So long as you can find ammo to feed it, I'd grab one. Mine shoots damn well at 200 yards. Better than my Mossberg Patriot 308.
What's a good price for a Lebel 1886? Where can I find one?
>>34267601
650 for a shooter though they can get pricey. And you find them on Gunbroker though none are currently listed.

I need a Carcano long rifle to match the bayonet I picked up at an estate sale a year ago. I need a Mannlicher system rifle badly.
>>34260807
The reason why I say it is that PPU makes brand new ammo that's cheaper. Also, Fusil Grâs are easier to find on guns international.
>>34268247
PPU makes brass for both 6.5 and 7.7, but they don't make fully loaded cartridges.
>>34268217
Weird question. Can you unfold the paper? Im trying to read the rock painting/geocaching article.
>>34268283
7.7 Jap. is not hard to load for, basically you fireform .30-06 brass with a wad of poly batting and grex or Cream of Wheat, then trim the neck, and use .303 MkVII load data.
If you already own some kind of LE or P-14, a Type 99 is not much more work to load for.

Anyone have any experience buying and using Martini Henrys? I was looking at IMA but I'm not sure if they have any decent rifles left. Would it be better to find one second hand at this point? What should be inspected on these things before buying?
>>34271216
This is slightly secondhand, as this rifle belongs to my brother, but I've helped him out with it. This was ordered from IMA as an "untouched" gun. Came all covered in yak grease, and was a bit rusty in places (under the handguard, for example), but it had everything it was supposed to. Cleanup wasn't that bad - getting rid of yak grease is easier than getting rid of cosmoline. The only problem was the forend was disintegrating at the front of the reinforcement bar on the bottom. This is apparently very common - we just used wood filler and it's held up so far.
Ammo was obtained by reshaping 24 gauge shotshells and loading them with paper-patched lead .45-70 bullets. The accuracy is actually pretty good considering the bore is .468 and the bullets are .459. We also had some old Kynoch cordite-loaded rounds as well.
Anything else you want to know?
>>34271396
Thanks for the reply.
Honestly a lot of the info I've gathered in terms of what to look for and how to reload so far was from the IraqVeteran videos on the Mk IV long levers, which is what I really wanted.
Do you think that it would've been worth it to get the "cleaned up" rifle from IMA? I guess they go through and make sure all the parts are at least there. The forend isn't surprising info to me, but it sounds like nothing that a putty or acraglas can't fix. I really just want a shooter that isn't complete garbage, ya know? So would a cleaned up version even be worth it, or would rolling the dice and getting an untouched one be acceptable for a usable gun?
How much is a very good condition but mis-match German K98 worth?
Just throw me a guestimation please
>>34271448
Those IV8888 videos helped my brother out a lot, too - especially with regards to loads.
>I really just want a shooter that isn't complete garbage, ya know?
The general design is pretty robust. I would be surprised if you got one that was not in shootable condition. The bore on my brother's was dark, but the rifling is really strong. Be advised, you'll likely not be able to get all the shit out of the bore without firing it. We scrubbed and brushed as much as we could and the first shot still blew a dark cloud of smoke out the front (using Kynochs, no less).
>So would a cleaned up version even be worth it, or would rolling the dice and getting an untouched one be acceptable for a usable gun?
I suppose it depends on how much your time is worth. Is $200 extra worth not having to clean a bunch of grease? My brother thought all the cleaning/restoring was part of the fun, but your mileage may vary.
>>34271634
Non-matching bolt? If it's not an Russian/Yugo capture, maybe $700-900, from what I've seen, but I'm no expert by far. I got pic related for $825 and it's a 100% matching 1918 Gew98 conversion. I consider myself lucky to get that price on it.
>>34271701
Ok, I'll pick up one of the Martini's that need some scrubbing to get a good look at. I'm not afraid of putting in a little work to get a good gun out of it. Thank you for your replies. I've been putting off ordering one of these guns for ages because I wasn't sure if I'd get a worthwhile gun out of it. I'll def shitpost in a Milsurp thread when I get one that's presentable.

>>34275172
Eh, the bad is that it's mismatched, which isn't uncommon for the rebuilt guns, but the good news is the scope. Those are like $600 or $700 scopes.
I think it's fair at the price it is now, but I don't know how much more I'd go past it.
>>34275172
1000 for the rifle and around 600 for the optic. So 1600 would be my max. That's a pure 49 and not a Syrian one either.

A wartime British enfield with no import markings is worth more than $300. Get it. Good luck with the whole .303brit thing though. I had a 1920 Ishapore enfield which was a blast to shoot, but ended up selling it and getting a WASR-10 AKM.

He's used alternate accounts to bid up his auctions. Altered guns to make the "more valuable" by removing import marks, etc
>>34277644
Faking serial numbers to claim "all matching" has a reasonable explanation? Using secondary accounts to drive up auction prices has a reasonable explanation? Blatantly destroying a import mark has a reasonable explanation? Purposely mislabeling items has a reasonable explanation? Because I'd love to hear them.
>>34277506
But it's not. It's an Mle 1892. It WAS an 1890, but not anymore. Just like mine, except mine is an 1892M16, but at least mine is all matching and not import marked.
With that date of the barrel and being an 1890 then it had to have been a Carabine de Gendarmerie Modèle 1890, which desu isn't much different than what the 1892 became.

Anyone else here own a Krag? I'm on the fence as to whether or not I should sell mine. It's a nice rifle, but finding ammo is nigh impossible and it just spends most of the time in storage.

You probably wouldn't benefit much from it, but it does make you much more immune to shortages of ammo and open a lot of different possibilities for new calibers. Having a dedicated bench with plenty of space is nice and definitely makes it easier and more fun. But it can be done if you want to do it.

I've only won one auction from him and the only complaints that I have are that he didn't mention the stock crack on one of the guns and I think he overrated it at "Good" by a little bit. He DID have good pictures of the stock crack, I just didn't look because I wasn't expecting to win.
>>34278142
I own a sporterized one that I probably shouldn't have bought, I need to either buy a replacement or fix mine.
Why is the 1903 Springfield so popular when it was never the primary service rifle for any war the US was involved in?
>>34280166
That smooth mauser action in .30'06 with a nice peep sight (on the A3s). What's not to love?

>>34278171

Won this at an online auction for $250 (interesting to see how much they will charge me for shipping and buyer's premium) hopefully it doesn't end up being a Romanian capture.

>>34280587
