There are a lot more interesting variants going for the Type 99, but the Type 38 has a better build quality in general. Strawed pieces and springs, fully milled parts, no stampings besides the dust cover.

Get one that is in good condition, preferably all matching with an intact mum. Better yet, try to find one with things like the dust cover, bayonet, sling and cleaning rod.
I prefer the Type 99 in terms of looks, but I went for a Type 38 because it was a way better price and was all matching with an intact mum. No cleaning rod, sling or bayonet though :(
Ultimately I want to own both, and maybe one of the carbine variants too.

Took this as a partial trade from my co worker, I sold him an old Ford pickup. Mostly matching, early serial number, with a letter in front of 4 numbers. He said he bought it cheap from a guy 10 years ago and let it sit in his gun cabinet ever since.

Internet said this scope and mount combo is a hit or miss as to whether it holds zero and is worth a shit. Evidently China welded these on before they shipped them to the U.S. I'll try it out next week after I'm back from Chicago to see Metallica.

It was in the wrong stock, and orange from rust when I got it. The rust was only surface level, no pitting. Gun cleaned up really well. It looks like it was a GI bring back that got sporterized in the 50's.

Make sure that it's an actual carbine. The sights will have a C stamped on them. The stock will have it's band retained with a spring, not a pi, which was used on rifle stocks. If it's a cut down rifle stock you will see a splice of wood in the barrel channel on the end where they milled into the wood to lighten it. It will have to have the proper Krag front sight too. 99% of Krag "carbines" are just cut down rifles.

I have a cut down krag that was supposed to be made to look like a carbine. Cut down or not, still an awesome gun. Ammo is just hard to get for it. I finally got myself 150 rounds of brass and have been loading. If it's in good condition, they're good rifles.

7.7 Jap. is not hard to load for, basically you fireform .30-06 brass with a wad of poly batting and grex or Cream of Wheat, then trim the neck, and use .303 MkVII load data.

If you already own some kind of LE or P-14, a Type 99 is not much more work to load for.

Someone redpill a poorfag on the Mas-49/56.

I bought a Mas-36/51 with a beautiful bore a few months ago and fell in love with it. Probably my favorite rifle I own at the moment; enough that I plan to get the die set. Now I want her younger sister.

This is slightly secondhand, as this rifle belongs to my brother, but I've helped him out with it. This was ordered from IMA as an "untouched" gun. Came all covered in yak grease, and was a bit rusty in places (under the handguard, for example), but it had everything it was supposed to. Cleanup wasn't that bad - getting rid of yak grease is easier than getting rid of cosmoline. The only problem was the forend was disintegrating at the front of the reinforcement bar on the bottom. This is apparently very common - we just used wood filler and it's held up so far.

Ammo was obtained by reshaping 24 gauge shotshells and loading them with paper-patched lead .45-70 bullets. The accuracy is actually pretty good considering the bore is .468 and the bullets are .459. We also had some old Kynoch cordite-loaded rounds as well.

Anything else you want to know?

The general design is pretty robust. I would be surprised if you got one that was not in shootable condition. The bore on my brother's was dark, but the rifling is really strong. Be advised, you'll likely not be able to get all the shit out of the bore without firing it. We scrubbed and brushed as much as we could and the first shot still blew a dark cloud of smoke out the front (using Kynochs, no less).

I suppose it depends on how much your time is worth. Is $200 extra worth not having to clean a bunch of grease? My brother thought all the cleaning/restoring was part of the fun, but your mileage may vary.

But it's not. It's an Mle 1892. It WAS an 1890, but not anymore. Just like mine, except mine is an 1892M16, but at least mine is all matching and not import marked.

With that date of the barrel and being an 1890 then it had to have been a Carabine de Gendarmerie Modèle 1890, which desu isn't much different than what the 1892 became.
