I just bought my .308win rifle. It is set to arrive Friday or Saturday. I have a little experience with guns but I know nothing about precision shooting, which is what I will be using the rifle for. Please teach me.

Note: I don't quite know what yardage I'll be shooting at so I'd need to know the optimal range of .308 and what scopes/reticles go best for each range. I'm also looking to find the best glass for the least amount of money. What sort of cost am I looking at?

Pic is the rifle I just bought but in lefty
>>
I know is my instructor uses MIL-dot, and I think the SVD type reticle looks pretty cool. I don't know what type of scope he uses but I know it's like two grand. I don't have a concrete budget but as a rule of thumb I'd like to not spend more than the rifle ($700)

Thanks. I'll watch it all later but I need to at least have an idea to my guy by Friday. Is there a way of putting it super simple? No I'm not asking for spoon-feeding and trying to skirt around doing research, just pressed on time. Thx though, I saved the playlist.
>>
Don't rest the barrel on anything when shooting precision, messes with the barrel harmonics
>>
>>34256271
I mean if you're shooting under 500yards you won't need to be autistically knowledgeable, just know your zero and holdovers. Shoot on empty lungs, learn to load a bipod properly, use finger pad rather than joint, etc.
>>
>>34256415
Could you point out just a few of the essential videos in the playlist for me? All I really need at the moment is what scope to buy, the technique will come as I'm training with ex military and professionals.

I don't know what your idea of precision shooting is, but you're going about it all wrong.

Thx

I didn't say I wouldn't go over $700 bucks idiot. I have absolutely no idea what a scope will cost, I just decided that was a logical price point I want to hover around.

For venison jerky, and to impress people on the internet. If I'm being realistic most of my shots are around 200m.

Lol, try lower middle quartile semi retired one bedroom house completely paid off with only day time television, hunting, fly fishing, woodworking and obsessive yard care and gardening to keep me busy and sane. Fly fishing is where you turn when you have nothing else to live for.

A guy I know is giving me a Millett 4-16x50 TRS-1. Good for 1k yards @.308?
>>
Posting here since there's no /psg/. I just bought a rifle from a pawn shop, it came with a scope that looks pretty good. I know nothing about precision shooting, though I'm thinking to start dabbling in it if I can find a place.

The scope is a Weaver V9-ii W. Are those any good? It has markings for up to 1000 yards.
>>
>>34257394
They are not bad scopes, I don't think they have enough evl to get a 168 gr .308 out to 1000 yards without a base, could be wrong but they have around 54 Total elv, meaning half of that is usable, So you'd get around... I think 850-900 in hot weather high hum, but you'd be bottoming out your optic without a base, at when you get to the lower thresholds of the turrets they start getting squishy if they are not made well enough. I've got a V9 on my .22 UCM-2, it does well for 100 yrd shooting.

What rifle did you get anon?
>>
>>34257734
Mine's on a .30-06, and I'm starting with 200yd shooting. I guess I could do worse.

I doubt I'll be trying 1000 yards any time soon, because I don't know anywhere to do that. Am new england fag, all the public land is all woods.

>>34256157
Didnt read any posts in thread, so i assume youre on a budget and have zero clue on how to rifle.

Get the following(all low budget, but high quality)

Primary arms 4-14x FFP mil dot reticle about 230$.
First Focal Plane means that no matter what magnification youre zoomed in to, youre zero will remain the same, but the reticle will change in size. Mil dot is whats used by military and most training classes.

Burris signature zee rings about 30-40$.
These are excellent cheap rings that will take out most user error when installing a scope.

Im gonna assume you already have a picatinny rail scope mount on the rifle already, so im not gonna tell you what to get.

Buy the following ammo

1x box of 150gr federal/ american eagle ammo

1x box of 150gr remington core lokt ammo

1 box of 168gr hornady match ammo

Heres a simple explanation of what grain bullets to use. 150gr for shooting less than 300 yards/meters, 168gr for shooting less than 600, and 175gr for shooting less than 900. Anything more than 168gr will wear out the barrel faster.

The reason for the two types of 150gr are that they are cheap and for the most part have good quality control for factory ammo. After shooting both, purchase whatever one was more accurate in your rifle. And use that as practice ammo. The 168gr match ammo is to test how accurate your rifle really is. It should give you the smallest groups if you shoot straight.

I advise you to purchase a torque adjusting wrench or screwdriver, about 10$, and screw in everything to what their respective manuals say to do.

Get a cheap rifle rest or borrow one, about 20-30$.

Get a montana rifle sling, or a cheap web sling. 8-40$.

Get a cheap otis cleaner, clp, and papertowels.

Clean the rifle. Clean from chamber to muzzle when using brushes. DO NOT EVER use anything more abrasive than a paper towel to clean the muzzle crown(the face). Scratching the crown will fuck up your accuracy.

Go shoot.

Oh and it's just a Remshit 3400. Like I said, poorfag at pawn shop, be nice to me--I only paid $300. I'm considering selling it and buying an Axis .308 but keeping that scope. Hate polymer stocks though, and the Remshit can take a 10 round mag which nothing else in my price range can.
>>
>>34258071

You'll be fine, good learning rifle imo. if a tad heavy round wise.
>>
>>34258071
If i were you i would get a rem 700 adl youth model for about 400$ new.

Comes with a scope, and stock spacers for different sizes.

I got one for my friend who was new to rifles, and after a year of shooting we upgraded the stock and barrel and scope, and uses it for competitions.
>>
Fuck, did I say 3400? I meant 7400.

>>34258099
That's good to hear. Maybe I can make it work for a while. I do like the feel of it.

>>34258127
That's weird, everyone I've talked to says that if you're getting a cheap rifle new, Savage is significantly better than Remshit. Besides, semi auto is usually out of my price range but I like it now that I have it.
>>
>>34258280
I just mentioned it since youre on a budget. Rem is fine. Yes its shitty as a stock rifle SOMETIMES. but every gunsmith past and future know how to work on them and make em good. They are good starter rifles because of this. And pretty much the gunsmithing world have perfected making the rem 700 run good.

Are there better guns? Hell ya. But if youre on a real slim budget, this is the rifle.

As someone who had a savage with a higher round count, everything in that post is true. I'd still recommend it for someone testing the waters of prison shooting if asked about them.

Why? Beyond the somewhat sketchy implications I don't see why you need to be leet sniper bro the very day you get the rifle. Learning starts at the bottom, there is nothing wrong with taking time. First figure out how to sight the rifle in and go from there, but don't expect to be winning any competitions on day one.
