All the MGS5's weapons are franken-guns, made up by mixing numerous IRL designs and pieces. Like with the past games, they had a military & weapons expert advising the team, so everything (sans the truly scifi shit) are possible. The main "ARs" for example are pretty much AR18 / 180 wannabes, soviet non-AKs have RK / Galil elements, etc.

Personally, I was quite disappointed they didn't implement real deal weapons. MGS was always full of /k/ommando porn, with amazing attention to detail at best. It's even more striking considering that so many other things are so realistic and authentic, like the uniforms and personal gear of the various military forces, or the obvious Sony Walkman casette players.

In my opinion, MGS:PW was way better Outer Heaven simulator + better Cold War commando dream game. And the better "MGS5" title it was originally meant to be.

They were fine for being fakey fake guns. They defintely took inspirations from cold war guns like FALs, M16s, Sig rifles, AKs, Vz58s, etc.

I made a pretty accurate FAL in the game plus some other stuff that passes, but at the end of the day. it's still a frankengun.

Everyone complains that they are Franken guns but actually when you are able to customise the weapons you can make them into very close resemblance of the actual weapons. E.g. mixing parts of the MRS and UN ARC together. I even added the Angola equivalent of the Rhodesian camouflage.
