According to Human Rights Watch, its effects are terrible for civilian.
So why the US are using this?
>>
>>34253502
Because its effects are terrible on soft targets. Nothing like being burned alive by a chemical substance you need to scrape off with a knife.

They're using it as a smokescreen so civilians can evacuate without getting shot by ISIS, or so they say. In practice, using WP in an urban center is inevitably going to set some people on fire.

Saying you're doing it for cover gives you plausible deniability re: war crimes.

The Real ass reason OP? Because it works really well, and they can call them spotting rounds, and won't get in trouble for using them with that particular label. You can use Willy Pete for marking targets, because it's presumed that spot is about to eat conventional artillery anyway, and who doesn't want the best of both worlds

The real reason is too provide smoke and obscure an objective.

It also is justified in forested areas a day prior to assaulting in order to burn down possible enemy concealed positions, with no intent to destroy the enemy but rather their fortifications.
>>
>According to Human Rights Watch, its effects are terrible for civilian.
Any weapon of war is kind of terrible for civilians.

>So why the US are using this?
There really are no better ways to make a good smoke screen. Sometimes it's also more effective to set bad guys on fire as opposed to blowing them up

nah, the official line is that the open tip is a side effect of a manufacturing process that's intended to make the round more accurate and had nothing whatsoever to do with causing it to fragment in any way shape or form.

basically, they justify it based on intent.

like I said, though. 7n6 got the same sort of accusations -- that the hollow nose was designed to fragment.

Everyone uses WP.

There's no rule against the general use of WP. WP is well known for its smoke causing and incendiary properties. You're more than free to use them to create smoke or start fires as you wish by every international law.

You're just not allowed to directly target infantry with it.

>Oops, these guys were caught outside when I was trying to produce a smoke cloud here. Not my fault. :^)

Because it's very effective.

Legally speaking usage of incendiaries is only illegal when it comes to built up areas with a lot of civilians. Then it's technically a war crime, but as evidenced by prior recent incidents(gaza comes to mind), this doesn't really mean anything to anybody.
>>
>>34253543
War Crimes are irrelevant, the US is not a member of the International Crimes Court, and no US soldier will EVER go to the Hague barring a catastrophic change in US foreign policy and military prowess.

>>34253502
The real reason, pure and simple, is that it is brutally effective, and as some anons noted it CAN be used very effectively as a smoke screen. Same reason we still use Cluster bombs, same reason we have been known to use fuel-air bombs despite people getting horrific visions of lungs getting ripped from your mouth, same reason we try our best to make 5.56 fragment despite the old Hague convention banning fragmenting ammunition (we aren't a signatory to that either).

There are many, MANY things in this world that exist in various legal grey areas, and the US inevitably uses most of them.

Fun fact, it's illegal to bomb cities too, but we do it anyway.

>>34253686
We aren't Hague signatories.

Chlorine, while horrific, is not that effective, particularly as countermeasures are cheap and easy to produce (even just a wet rag offers significant protection), and its high visibility makes it easy to avoid. It is inexpensive to manufacture, and has a high psychological effect, but is far less dangerous than something like VX.

>most traditional WP is a HE burster that spreads it in all directions, 825 kicks out a canister full of WP felt wedges that shower down in that distinctive pattern.
Yes, it's new and current manufacture
Yes, it's legal internationally
No, nobody gives any fucks whatsoever, because it is necessary and it works
It's actually not an effective incendiary, thats a minor characteristic, the main use is for marking targets or producing a rapid screening smoke.

>Its a marking round, it indicates the location of screaming women and children (joke) :)

Traditional bursting WP
Note pre-safety, nobody is hiding from the dreaded incendiary attack, 90+% of the WP is already consumed into phosphorus pentoxide smoke.
>the real danger is breathing in the smoke as it converts to phosphoric acid when it gets wet in the lungs

Because they are the bad guys, fighting people in rags with moabs and then cry about them playing unfair

Why do people insist on fighting be fair....... It's by far one of the more hypocritical things I've ever heard. I think using WP is underkill we should have went ahead and nuked them to the point we could see them glow from Mars.

>Can someone explain to me why the US are using white phosphorus?
Because it is a nice way to remember everyone in Raqqa that USA and SDF are evil and when Based Assad comes by and retakes the syrian land back to the syrian People they won't complain about him anymore with Free ""Syrian" Army bullshit again.

That, my friend, is 4D chess being played for a long lasting ME peace.

most of that game was fun but that scene pisses me off to no end. Even a mouth breathing retard could tell that was a mass of civilians, even using thermal camera. Then the game MAKES you shoot them in order to continue.

Goddamn I was mad. Felt so cheap
