When is it time to refinish a gun?
Does your answer change if it is a new production gun compared to a vintage, out of production firearm?
>>34253464
>When is it time to refinish a gun?
When the value of the gun will be increased.
(protip: this depends on a lot of factors.)
>Does your answer change if it is a new production gun compared to a vintage, out of production firearm?
Absolutely, yes.
I refinish a LOT of guns, and have refused to refinish a lot of others. Ask me anything.
If it looks fucked up and has no historical value then go for it!
i have a question about the finish on ar15 rifles
when they're new they're all black, but i've seen old ones and the receiver looks grey/silver
is it possible to remove the black finish purposely to get this 2-color look?
>>34254003
Yes. Naval jelly. Use caution and go slowly.
>>34254025
holy shit naval jelly
i actually remember fucking up the bluing in an air rifle i had as a teenager because i wanted to use naval jelly to remove some rust it had
that rifle looked ugly as fuck after that.
out of curiosity, what would happen if i didn't use caution and go slowly?
>>34254056
You'd end up with an ugly gun. It'd work just fine but wont have that sexy 'used' look. Alternately you add paint to get the same effect.
>>34254025
kek.
>>34254003
It was a different kind of anodize.
All "anodizing" is is just making the surface of the aluminum corrode in a weak acid with a little electric current running through it (hence, the 'anode' in 'anodize'). This creates microscopic "pores" in the surface, and that surface will be different if you use different acids or different amounts of current.
The color also depends on what dye you use. Yes, dye. The last step in anodization is to dip the part in a strong dye, which fills those little pores and gives the part it's color. AR15s are almost always black, but you could, if you wanted, dye them grey, purple, yellow, red... you every see those little multi-colored D-rings for sale at the checkout line at Home Depot? All anodized aluminum.
>>34254003
That was a different finish. Colt used grey phosphate and it varies between batches. The new black is anodized.
The old one would wear easily and would essentially buff itself with use making high wear areas smooth and two tone in appearance.
>>34254083
is it possible to have it in the non-dyed natural aluminum color?
what would that look like?
>>34254108
That depends. If you just anodized it, and didn't dye it after, it would look like this.
I think it looks like shit, but that's just my opinion.
>>34254124
Alternately, you could remove the anodize layer with a little fine-grit sandpaper, steel wool, and elbow grease, and then buff the aluminum to a high shine.
Then you would have Captain Phasma's AR...which also looks like shit in my opinion.
>>34254025
super clean degreaser works well too.
pic related.
>>34253708
fuck off zed you donĀ“t do shit to no one
>>34254137

>>34254151
I like your deck. Wanna be friends?
>>34254151
this is some tuxedo shit, man
>>34254142
protip: disassemble before dunking the whole thing like this retard did and didn't bother to re-oil the bare steel and rusted the entire rifle.
>>34254192
actually its a picnic table.
>>34254202
implying it was accidental.
>>34254146
Ya man. anytime! I have to intersperse a little being normal in with all the shitposting and trolling. I do also love guns, ya know.
>>34254142
That looks horrible.
>>34254202
Better protip: Don't try to make one kind of finish look like a different kind. Just refinish it to have the kind you want. Works a whole lot better.
>>34254212
It was absolutely accidental, through carelessness and nignorance.
>>34254291
that's right you were there that night standing next to me.
>>34254205
Sweet. Lets make some lunch!
>>34254309
redneck/10 would drink Keers Laght next to.
>>34254309
....i...i I NEED THIS
>>34253464
>>34253708
Should I refinish a sporterized 1909 Argentino rifle rechambered in 30-06? it seems that by time I buy all the original wood it would be cheaper to just buy an all original one.
>>34254348
ATF comes over. sees grille, shoots dog.
>>34253464
If its old or rare or milsurp....when its totaled if it doesnt have historical or collector value.
If its new and common whenever the fuck you want.
Also dont be that guy and try to pass off your cold blued finnish mosin as being untouched.
I know what cold blue smell like eat a dick not cool....in other words if you refinish a gun dont try to pass it off as having a nice finish from 1909 its a real dick move. Say you refinished it if youre going to sell it take pride in the good work you did or own up to the shit job you did.
>>34254497
If you don't have a pic, you don't have the rifle.
>>34255062
>>34254330
What wood set? only ones i can find look retarded
>>34254497
I'll try again:
For all I know, you're a 14 year old noguns britbong, and I'm not going to waste my time giving you an opinion about your imaginary rifle.
If you posted a pic (not one off Google Images, pleb) I might help you out.
>>34255149

>Ironwood Designs
thanks
Well, since everyone in this thread is either spamming or shitposting, I'll just cast some relevant images into the ocean of piss.
Here's a Remington 550-1 .22 that I refinished twice. The lesson there was "Fuck Birchwood Casey shit."
Here's another 550-1 with a severely cracked poorly-glued stock that I stripped, reglued, clamped, and refinished.
Got a bottle of really nice bourbon for this one.
Here's a Remington Speedmaster with a fucked-up receiver and wood.
If you're going to do a polished aluminum look, this is the proper way to do it. Not on a fucking AR.
Some kid carved his initials and fucking flame stripes into this vintage Mossberg with a goddam ball-point pen.
Thank christ that shit steamed out most of the way. Look at the figuring in that wood... that's why I use BLO for old walnut. No stain, no fucking varnish or shiny bullshit. Just about a dozen or so coats of hand-rubbed linseed oil.
Old ways are sometimes best ways.
>Zed actually being useful
What universe is this?
>>34255775
kek, its like he doesnt even want to tell me how to store my guns.
>>34255735
God i love old mossberg .22s
>>34255735
The shiny bullshit is easier to clean, though.
>>34255790
Ohhh yeah. This fucker was a tackdriver too.
Sold it to an old fudd for twice what I paid. I almost wish I hadn't...
>>34255180
Its at my cabin, I don't have it with me. The wood is in nice shape but it's just the stock was cut down to sporteize it.
It's so rewarding to post content in the middle of shitposting.
Here's an example of a firearm I would refuse to refinish. Yes, the bluing is worn. Yes, the stock is dinged and dirty. Doesn't matter. Refinishing would lower the value, and well, make it less interesting.
It's 100% subjective, but when you put a dollar sign on that subjectivity, the decision is 100% objective.
>>34256860
Oh, no problem then!
When you get to your cabin, you can take a pic and post it. I'll remember, I'm sure.
>>34255582
i refinished this mosin
>>34256922
Fuck off.
>>34257068
nice
