Reason for all that kit is because we would often pass other units that were RTB so they could do with the extra kit, or you could get stuck out there, sometimes with other units that already expended their supplies.
one time an american unit went out one morning at about 7:00, got pinned down, sand storm moved in, had to hunker down for the night and extract them to our OP because they couldn't get birds in.

Yeah, it wasn't so bad.
Special treatment to be scruffs, special kit & equipment (we even got to test some stuff), and lots and lots of combat because we were the first to the fight.

But that was the problem, always being in the first and being first took its toll, we had pretty high rates of being wounded, over 6 months we took 10 wounded.

The worst is when we got attached to infantry units to be point man for a patrol or something because you knew that for the whole of that patrol you would be the first contact.

By far the best things about being Recce (same goes for sniper platoons) is no officers, just a S/SGT. and most of the guys in recce platoons were selected prior to joining, so were mostly lifers & vets anyway.

You can find them, you just have to be on your shit. I was part of a Route Clearance Platoon, and that was literally our job. You drive down the road at about 5km/hr, 2 if it's a hot area, and look for anything the slightest bit suspicious. Of course something is only clear as long as you can see it, so it wasn't a perfect solution. They shot at us a lot too, since we would generally find anything they laid out.

They got pretty ingenious, actually. One guy would come out one day and dig a hole. Two days later, another guy would bury wire leading to the hole. A few more days after that, the trigger man would set the bomb and get into position. We found holes with wire running to them all the time. We'd spool up the wire and mark the position on the BFT, and sure enough, a few days later there's a bomb in the exact spot. Same went for any vehicle any coalition force would shoot up, since they'd usually just leave it there. About 3 days after it got lit up, there'd be a bomb in the back seat. They even started putting big ass bombs in culverts that ran under the road, so we eventually had to escort construction engineers to weld grates of rebar over the holes. Which was a guaranteed opportunity to get shot at, bar none.
