Either or either. Bullets arent magic, if you make a bad shot with either your gonna end up kneeling in a circle of bears jacking off with your makeup all messed up.

Pick the round you can accurately shoot and get a quick follow up shot with. Bear could cover 20 yards in the time it takes you to soak up the recoil of a big magnum or you could have put 3 shots into it from a .308 AR.

If the shotgun is semi-auto, it's better. Both rounds penetrate, but what's most important is hitting the bear's skull and reliably for that you want something rapid firing without manual action.
Most bears will of course stay clear from you and any interested bears aren't that big of a threat as you will have time to retreat, aim, pepperspray or whatever you decide to do and in the end they are unlikely to charge at you seriously anyway.
If you surprise a bear though, or get caught between it and her cubs, you really, really, need to be able to rapidly fire at the same spot.

Fishing guides I've taked to in Alaska all seem to use shorter-barreled 870s with slugs for "save the cityboy client" guns.

I know fuck all about bears so I asked them about it, and they pretty much all said "most bears here aren't as tough as you'd think, 12 gauge slugs work fine".

An actual semiauto rifle round, stop fucking around with this fuddlore shit.

45-70 has killed every large game animal on Earth. It is no longer king, but once was. 12Ga has never had that honor. That said, either will be fine for your purpose, as well as a semi 308. If you were -hunting- bear, with the intention of getting a clean shot from a safe distance, you could go smaller, but defense implies you want it for a just in case up close weapon, so go big or go home.

A bolt gun could work but id say you need a lot of training. Some people feel comfortable hunting the big 5 with a bolt gun and id say follow up shots are just as important there than with bear defense. Again, practice with whatever you choose.

When my brother went to Svalbard, he said everyone had stainless Ruger Gunsite Scouts in .308 for polar burr defense. The authorities there encourage people to carry, and advise people bring rifles in .30 calibre.
It sounds legit, but if OP is going through thick brush, he might be better off with something heavier. .45-70 and shotgun slugs both seem like solid options, and while I might lean more towards 45-70, I think I'd rather than that have something in .375 H&H, with some reservations because I'm not sure how hot you can load a .45-70.
