They probably didn't get the issue yet, I don't think they started using Flak Jackets until 1967, The Marines were all using their Flak Jackets by the the Tet Offensive happened.

Vietnam was ridiculously hot in some parts and a lot of the time soldiers would have heavy loads to carry, flak jackets were heavy and kept in the heat being a major pain in the ass
They also were not bulletproof at all and only designed for fragmentation
>>34250825
Nope.
At this point they didn't exist in any reasonable capacity to stop 7.62 rounds. Flak jackets were introduced in WW2 and worn by bomber/fighter pilots (hence the name). Then they were issued to the Marines and Army, but given the limited scope of what they could potentially protect the wearer from... no one really wore them.
How much would I be looking at for an average lightweight rucksack? I know they go for quite a bit, but I've seen them ranging anywhere from $200 to like $900.
>>34250568
SHORT!!!!!!
>>34251551
>Shitty flak jackets that were more likely to give you a heatstroke than protect you from bullets
>Using fucked up powder formulas for the 5.56 bullets, almost blowing the fucking charging handle out the back and causing constant jams. Forever giving the M16 the stigma of being a piece of shit.
>Political incompetence
>Horrid handling of the entire situation by the higherups.
>Equipment in general being fourth hand pieces of shit
It's a wonder we're not speaking Vietnamese.
But seriously, why was there SO much incompetence and general bullshittery in the 60s/70s

On a sidenote, can anyone reccomend some good reads about the war? Already read Chickenhawk

I'm also reading through Fields of Fire by Jim "Gook Killer" Webb, its a pretty good read thus far.

You'd be surprised how much weight a properly rated tire can handle. Those aren't what you'd find on a regular car.
>Be onna fire department
>Single rear axle, dual wheels on the pumper, 43,000 pounds fully loaded.
>Tandem rear axles, dual wheels on the tanker/tender 61,000 pounds.
The tires don't squash down unless you drive over something friendo.

The South Koreans were pretty brutal dudes. They were more of the "kill em all let God sort em out" mentality, and as a result basically did a My Lai whenever they rolled up on a village. On the flipside they pushed the VC's shit in whenever they got into contact. Referencing Chickenhawk up here
>>34257728
The author states that whenever he had to transport ROK soldiers they rode in complete silence, and got their shit done. Once when the airfield that the author was stationed at got mortared, the Sorks sent several teams out into the jungle and a few hours later came back with the heads of the VC who mortared the base. Hence the author saying near the end of the book that if the South Koreans ran the war, it would probably be over very quickly. Just wouldn't be much of Vietnam left.
>>34261690
Its also rather remarkable considering that the South Koreans initially went in with WW-2 vintage weaponry and still kicked ass.
