Local shop just got this sword in. I know my antique firearms really well, but I know jack all about swords/sabers. What is this thing? Despite not knowing what it is, I may pick it up if the price is right.
>>
Another shot of the hilt(?).
>>
Last image I got. It looks a little rough, but it wouldn't be the first antique I'd have to clean up. Nonetheless, is it even salvageable?
>>
Bumpin'

that's a sword

Bumpin' again.

Looks like an 1860 light cavalry saber, i am not an expert though.
>>
>>34247765
It's an American sabre at least. Google American cavalry and artillery sabre and you can find sabres that look kind of similar.
>>
It looks a lot like a French 1855 officer saber

I've been looking, but the ornate basket keeps throwing me off. Nothing I've found has had that yet, but I'm still looking.

Looks pretty dang close. If that's what it is it's no wonder I wasn't getting results, I assumed it was American.
>>
>>34248080
Custom work? Not all swords were issued.
>>
OP here. I haven't seen this thing in the flesh yet. If I was to take a look at it, could I expect to find some sort of markings on it that may point to its identification? Where would I look?
>>
>>34247765
Whatever it is, it's fake. The finish shouldn't be flaking off like that. It should be solid brass.
>>
>>34248177
Plated metal isn't unheard of on swords.

It's a officer's saber with a nickel plated hand guard. Officers tended to buy their own fancier shit rather than use the standard issue. The blade is probably a bone-stock 1860 light cavalry saber blade, made by Ames if it was closer to the civil war era, made in Germany if it's newer or it could have been made by some smaller company that only the true sword autists on sword forums will have ever heard of.

If it is what you say it is, would you know how much it may be worth?

One more bump for input.

There should be maker's marks on the ricasso. You'll be able to track it from there. I would guess French or German made.
