The British military actually has been atrocious at infantry combat for ages, they just lie and brag about it, and since their allies usually win they get to write as the victors from the safety of their Island.

Dunkirk was essentially the British retreating to sit on a beach for a few days after only the first couple skirmishes, waiting for civilians to come rescue them.
The only reason the entire British military survived the encounter was France valiantly covering their country sized undefended flank, and Germany getting caught in traffic.
It was pathetic by all definitions, along with the rest of England's military track record when you get past revisionism.

Dunkirk is celebrated not because of the result of the Battle of France, but because of the way it brought the nation together to pull everything they could out of the fire to have another chance in future, instead of losing it all.
