The program was doomed to fail from the very beginning because it was born from the wrong idea. And that being, that it's possible to build an aircraft that can fullfill every role in every mission for every service. If you want a good fighter, you build a figher; if you want CAS platform you design a dedicated CAS aircraft. The are several examples when cancelling the deadborn project had forced the defense contractors to rectify their mistakes and benefited the military in the long run, Seawolf and Marine's IFV among most notable. F-35 will just consume more and more resources, getting suspended and called out right in the middle of mass production, without ever reaching full combat readiness. There are far too many bureaucrats, politicians and lobbyists that have direct stakes in keeping it going.
