I might have an opportunity to pick up a lightly used .270 bolt action for cheap... Is it worth going in on, or would I be better off picking up a 30-06?

It's not a meme you mongoloid, but the .270 is a capable cartridge that is a little faster and uses somewhat lighter bullets. It can't be loaded as heavy as the 30-06 but it also does better with light weight hollow points.
Is asking if something is a meme a meme?

What would I want to use these lighter-weight rounds on? Smaller game?

>.270 a meme
It's a fudd round, but as the above poster said, there's nothing wrong with it

If one wants to avoid fuddliness, would the Remington 700 be a better choice?
>>34239307
pretty much any thing but moose or elk. but if you're close enough it's fair game.

remshit 700 IS the fudd rifle, go Tikka if you don't want to be a fudd, and get a better rifle.

I don't think it really matters, but .308's are pretty standard. Or you could be one of those people who like wildcat rounds.

The bullet is moving faster and flatter. It has a longer mean point blank range than a .30-06.

People use the .270 for Moose and Elk all the time. Bullet selection is everything.

This
270 is capable of killing anything in North America and is very accurate but above all flat shooting meaning that it does long range well in practical scenarios.
I use a Tikka T3 stainless/synthetic .270 for hunting. It has worked extremely well for me.

I forgot to mention that I use Hornady 130 grain SST's.
>>34239212
.270 on the left, .30-06 on the right.

A 270 with a 150 grain bullet will kill anything that walks. I prefer the Sierra Gameking, but any good bullet will work.

Get a Model 70, the new FN ones are nice, much nicer than the pre-'64s even. And if you get one in .270 then you're basically Jack O'Connor.
I have a Ruger 77mkII in .270 and I fuckin' love her. I pegged a deer at 500 yards in 2015 with 100g Hornady

Ruger M77s are really nice. I've always wanted an original model with tang safety.
