Surely, said the Optimists, space travel implies enlightenment, for it requires the control of great destructive energies. Any race which can't rise above its own brutal instincts will wipe itself out long before it learns to bridge the interstellar gulf.

The Pessimists envisioned a lonely universe full of dead rocks and prokaryotic slime. The odds are just too low, they insisted. Too many rogues, too much radiation, too much eccentricity in too many orbits.

Equidistant to the other two tribes sat the Historians. They didn't have too many thoughts on the probable prevalence of intelligent, spacefaring extraterrestrials— but if there are any, they said, they're not just going to be smart.

--- They're going to be mean. ---

What is Human history, if not an ongoing succession of greater technologies grinding lesser ones beneath their boots?
To the Historians, tools existed for only one reason: to force the universe into unnatural shapes. Technology is a stunted thing in benign environments, it never thrived in any culture gripped by belief in natural harmony. Why invent fusion reactors if your climate is comfortable, if your food is abundant? Why build fortresses if you have no enemies? Why force change upon a world which poses no threat?

Harsh weather and natural disasters either kill you or they don't, and once conquered—or adapted to— they lose their relevance. No, the only environmental factors that continued to matter were those that fought back, that countered new strategies with newer ones, that forced their enemies to scale ever-greater heights just to stay alive.

Ultimately, the only enemy that mattered was an intelligent one.

And if the best toys do end up in the hands of those who've never forgotten that life itself is an act of war against intelligent opponents, what does that say about a race whose machines travel between the stars?

Robotech has been dead since the 90's.
For the past 20 years, hey've been stringing along the few fans they have left with promises of a live action movie that HG knows has zero chance in hell of being produced.
I think it says a lot about your franchise when the newest thing you've produced is a dub of a fucking OVA from 1985.

The only good thing that was slightly acceptable about Mass Effect: Andromeda was Vetra.

The entire game would have been improved if her story was expanded a lot. Definite wife material, but Bioware put a SJW racist hack in charge who hates white people and hiring unqualified brown people was more important.

czeched, but I highly doubt aliums would be sexless. They would know what it is, they just wouldn't know how to handle a man who's fantasized for most of his adult life about face-fucking a xenomorph that was broken to be a fucktoy. >i need to fug a sexy tall turian lady
In all seriousness, yes, I saw Vetra and I was like, "yeah this is kinda a cutie."

>stupid bioware montreal, couldnt even give us a sex scene yet SFMfags can do it
I knew she'd get passed over ASAP for a good romance, fucking Tali syndrome all over again. Just enough to bait people and had the most potential, but in that case there was substance to make you care and with Vetra it was more a case of, "oh I know there should be stuff here, the face that it's not present is sad." Cora got full-on tits and everything, just once I wanted to see what a female turian had and for it to be canon.

What they should have done is not hire cosplayers for animators, not had a SJW shithead in charge, and focused on living up to a very hyped franchise that had seen some hurt over the last game's ending. Then for things like the sex scenes, contract out the animations to the top SFM animators out there who do this shit semi-professionally. Turian female getting railed by human male? Please, that's easy shit for a community that regularly has deathclaws getting titty-fucked by pokemon or some shit.

Frankly I think Bioware deliberately tanked the whole thing just so they wouldn't have to direct talent at it, why else would they put that team behind it? It doesn't make any sense.

If its an actual invasion force (or even just a single proper warship) from an advanced space faring race that is here to conquer us then the answer is that we would have literally zero way to fight back. The warship in question would not only be faster than any missile we could throw at it (so they could just outrun them) but it would also likely be equipped to deal with much more advanced and numerous missile strikes, our retrofitted primitive nukes would be shot down by PD if we could even hit it in the first place. Once you control the orbit you control the planet, they would just paste cities until we surrendered. Not that there is much point to conquering, its not like they could tax us or get any good resources out of us, much more likely is extermination via towed asteroid.

The only way you could make it interesting is by gimping the aliens in a massive way like in the book 'footfall':

'They possess more advanced technology than humans, but have developed none of it on their own. In the distant past on their planet, another species was dominant. This predecessor species badly damaged the environment, rendering themselves and many other species extinct, but left behind their knowledge inscribed on large stone cubes, from which the Fithp have gained their technology. Facing possible extinction due to the long-term effects of biological weapons, a group of high-ranking Fithp were selected to escape to the stars.'

These guys had no good idea of how to properly wage war, their psychology was easy to manipulate and the only part of their civilisation left was a single ship which wasn't even a real warship, giving a simple way to defeat them. We ended up beating them by cobbling together an orion battleship (pic related) and launching a surprise attack.

Ground combat was still pointless though, they set up lasers which swatted any aircraft or missile strike and ground units got pasted by orbital kinetic bombardment.

FTL travel requires energy shielding on some level, otherwise you'd be torn apart by hitting space debris at lightspeed. Anyone who can get here will not be impressed by our weapons, nor need to fear them.
>>
I honestly don't think the aliums will even bother coming to fight us. We've stripped our natural resources so badly, and built so much that they would have to remove. I mean it's not as though our infrastructure would be useful to them in the slightest. Our roads and buildings and wires and plumbing would all have to be torn up, or they could just avoid half the planet. Any species that has the power of FTL travel would almost certainly have AI as well, so they wouldn't even need us for slaves. If anything the aliens might come, suck up a bunch of our water, and fly away again without firing a shot because they know we can't do a thing about it.

It doesnt work that way, there is no way to even guess what would happen if matter moving faster than light impacted something. Maybe the universe would explode. The only way FTL could work if it was possible would be some sort of space warping or teleportation or dimensional fuckery or whatever.

>We've stripped our natural resources so badly
Meme, we have barely touched the surface of the material wealth of our planet. Most of it is much deeper and would be reachable with more advanced technology, although it can all be mined from asteroids and other stellar bodies way easier anyway if you had a space fleet so its still not particularly valuable.

>I mean it's not as though our infrastructure would be useful to them in the slightest. Our roads and buildings and wires and plumbing would all have to be torn up, or they could just avoid half the planet.
Quick google gives me this:
'GRUMP's latest estimates indicate that ~3% of global land surface area is covered by urban areas. As 29.2% of the planet's surface area is covered by land, this means that 3% x 29.2% = 0.9% of the total planetary surface area (incl. oceans) is covered by urban areas.'

> If anything the aliens might come, suck up a bunch of our water, and fly away
There are shitloads of ice comets in any given solar system, Earth would be a terrible place to get water from. Water would not be a particularly valuable resource for an interstellar nation.

Why would I want to fight them? My headcannon if aliens visited is that they're catgirls (and catboys!) from space with a culture that has an immense love of firearms. They happened to visit Earth, specifically the US, because of how much people in the US love guns and they want to exchange technologies with us so that we both can have more gun choices to appreciate.

I personally would love it if Earth became a military planet meant to breed and teach our children to fight for our glorious overlords. Would be pretty crazy going from playing vidya all day to cruising through space on an alien craft geared in starship trooper kit wielding portable rail cannons. Then dropping ODST style onto an enemy alien capital planet to rape, loot, and pillage the fuckers. And when we're done fucking that planet get to go home with our spoils of war rich as fuck with alien tech and space slaves.

This is humanities destiny.

I dont really know how we would defeat them specifically but the most interesting concept to me, is how our atmosphere would effect the warfare.

I.e.assume they are using some sort of projectile weapon designed for a planet with a different gravitational pull and different atmosphere. If their planets gravity is less than ours, their weapons strength would be increased, or rendered pea shooters if their gravity was more than earths.
Additionally would their lazer guns or projectiles or whatever even work here in our atmosphere. Gun powder wont burn in space/lack of oxygen so we would be fucked fighting a war on mars, but how would their natural resources used for weapons be effected on earth??

The only way to beat them will be to resist until they are losing more than they are gaining. After that, the real fun begins. We will have to rebuild the world with something like 10 percent of humanity kinda liking the rape gangs they have formed and 20 percent not wanting anything to do with any fighting. It will take at least 200 years before we catch back up to the seventies and thats hoping the invasion wasn't just a small expeditionary force.

Well honestly we've got a 50/50 chance, as far as we know they could have hyper advanced shields and Armour, but say if its entirely designed to defend against energy weapons or whatever equipment they use what use would it be at stopping 120mm APFSDS, they could come from a planet with no metal like the alloys our tanks are made out of and they simply wouldn't have ever had to design a weapon capable of penetrating it. they could also be immature if their planet was united early, say if England took over the entire world during the Empire and managed to hold it, military tech simply wouldn't have advanced quickly because there was no need for it to. they might not understand Air superiority, chemical weapons, or anything that's not line of sight.

Humans fight and war with each other on another level to anything else we know in nature so i actually believe the chances of coming across an alien species with a military completely inferior to ours in ever single way could actually be possible. and we would slaughter them to a single ayy out of pure fear.

The problem comes from the way that mass increases exponentially in an object that's approaching lightspeed, to a point where the mass would be infinite (or close to it) if the object actually reached 100% c, thus making it impossible.

Right hey're tech is gonna be better if they come here first. But what if they don't? What if we find them first, and they're the barbarians?

Or better yet, what if humans are the monsters? We're from a planet that has hyper-violent macro predators, micro-vermin that can kill macro predators, and a biosphere so diverse that most other planets can't even compare. What if the alines were the dominant species on their low-gravity planet without significant biological re-adaptaion, or never ha to compete for that niche initially?

Water is one of the best chemical solvents in the universe, and we drink it to stay alive, there's a good chance we're more terrifying than the aliens, physically anyway, by a great margin.

What makes you think any of that would be remotely unique? Life competes to live and the best way to compete is to develop ways to kill other organisms. Tech progress is driven by military necessity. It's very possible though. The real human home world would monitor us to see how civilations begin as their own world's history is lost to them.

Could explain abductions. Ayys want to see how the human mind works and what makes us so willing to kill. Maybe they hope a breakthrough on their project here will lead to better troop performance at home. Ayys seem like pacifist faggots anyways, so the ability to take on our more warlike ways would be a big help to them.

I would love to work for them as long as they make me a pair of drop in plasma conversion cylinders for 2 Colt SAAs.

>Aliens show up, realize that despite being technologically inferior that we're physically superior.
>Crack some kind of deal to lend us space exploration equipment in return for conscripts or just pay top dollar for human mercenaries
>Insane rumors that humans almost unkillable and laser weapon wounds don't phase them
>Humans are taller and stronger on average than all other races
>Whatever weird culture mashup results in human levies decorating their armor with religious symbols and sigils, scaring the shit out of aliens.
>The degree of adrenal response humans receive in response to danger and harm is super high compared to other species

I'm curious how it would get to that point. If we're talking about chemical or biological weapons sure but I don't know how, for example, laser weapons would become so specialized they wouldn't effect humans, aside from frequencies and the like, maybe.

I would suggest that a race that can travel between the stars visiting would have no need for an ulterior motive. If they greet us and try and communicate, it's because they genuinely do. We would pose no threat or hinderance to any nefarious goal of theirs if they were malevolent. Regardless of whether they wish to enslave us, murder us, or merely annihilate the planet/system because it's in the way.

An interstellar race or above is so much more advanced than ours, subterfuge would be a waste of their time. If they say they come in peace, I would take it on face value. Otherwise, they'd be just taking what they want from us.

While slightly clumsy this is the most interesting response to me. It seems possible that our tech would be similar enough that they would be prepared, but you are right that the possibility exists they would have entirely different technology and advancement. If that were the case, we would effectively be defenseless against each other as if they couldn't defend against our weapons we wouldn't be able to defend against ours. Suddenly the alien invasion concept becomes one of mutually assured destruction which changes the dynamic quite a bit. If they were advanced enough to put military force on another planet they probably have plenty of higher level thinking and therefore would recognize the risk. It's also likely they would be able to overpower us with sheer numbers, but the cost would be extremely high if we could both wantonly kill one another with no way of preventing it aside from killing faster than the enemy. Interesting stuff anon, good job.
>>
>>34260639
>It's also likely they would be able to overpower us with sheer numbers
Not him but what? I highly doubt they'll bring enough people to simply brute force a few billion able-bodied men and a few billion able-bodied women.

They would have to accomplish things quickly and with a decisive application of overwhelming force. A prolonged battle on the ground would simply end in disaster, every day they spend fighting would mean more and more of their technology gets captured. Eventually we will figure out a way to guard ourselves against their weapons, while they'll still be supporting troops slogging it out on the ground.

If we have a decent chance of hitting their orbital forces then it's pretty much a done deal, they either beat us in a decapitation strike that cripples everything or they go home losers.

This doesnt make any sense, energy is still just energy. If they can build space ships that can go between solar systems then they can generate shitloads of energy and whatever generates shitloads of energy can be turned into a bomb. Even if literally the only weapon they used was some sort of retarded technobabble brain wave ray that doesnt work on humans they could still jury rig their reactor output into something else pretty easily.

Never before has music so perfectly match a story I've read

The one thing I've never understood was what was sarasti's endgame? If everyone was being replaced by vampires who will eventually be without conscious thought, why did Sarasti/Theseus force Siri to rediscover emotions and use him as a gospel to the new world? And was sarasti ever making decisions on his own or was he completely pupeteered by Theseus the whole time?

I believe you're thinking of the current model of theoretical "warp drive", which shrinks space ahead of your ship and stretches it behind you, or something along those lines.

It's a way of achieving FTL, sure, but you still won't actually be traveling faster than light in relation to any of the warped space that you're moving in.

Again, I'm not a physicist, so I could just be totally wrong here.

That's retarded. Life likely started simply as self-replicating proteins, which I could imagine popping up in all manner of environments. The fact all life on earth is similar is due to a common ancestor and not sort of law of evolution that water is king. Genes for things like blood and the circulatory system are extremely similar among just about all large organisms. That doesn't mean it is the best or the only way a circulatory system equivalent can function. It's likely that any macroscopic life we will encounter will be vastly different.

You know, this is actually pretty plausible. Earth's gravity is almost too strong for space travel to take place, we've evolved as endurance hunting predators, and our traditional culture glorifies warfare and patriotism. For all we know, the galaxy could be filled with lightweight pacifist herbivores.
>>
What about weaponized anthrax or Spanish Flu? Assuming we don't get a hot piece of alien ass to smash or they just run right away. All you would need to do is somehow get the stuff into their respiratory system, and as far as we know all animals and life in general need to breathe in some way.
>>
>>34263880
This is very unlikely given that it makes way more sense, with how evolution works, that intelligent species evolve out of predators. An herbivore can get away with grazing the ground its whole life, and only has to run away when pursued by a predator. A predator has to actively seek its (moving) food, and has to design relatively complex strategies hunting for it. The evolutionary pressure for predators to develop complex intelligence is much higher.

We don't. They glass us from orbit, we ded. This is why alien invasion movies are retarded, why would they bother with a ground invasion when they could literally strike us from orbit where we can't reach them. Not even "dey need our resources" makes sense, everything you can get on our planet can be gotten elsewhere in the solar system, on planets and asteroids that don't have a bunch of angry intelligent lifeforms on them. I'm sure if for some retarded reason they needed to do a physical invasion (wanting to keep our planet intact or invade us or some shit?) they'd probably do it with a bunch of unmanned war drones that have far superior weaponry and armor than us. To elaborate, an Alcubierre Metric (or warp field) requires materials or systems that have negative mass. There are no means for achieving this kind of result.
>>
>>34269030
>I am a physicist
noice

What about using wormholes? Either finding one in the wild, or creating a pair and then building an interstellar network out of them, Stargate-style?
>>
>>34271410
Not him, nor a physicist. From what we know, wormholes require an enormous amount of energy to remain open for even a few seconds. We're talking (iirc) solar masses worth of energy per second.

As expressed by others here, a star faring race either has a method for producing that amount of energy for warp fields, wormholes or ftl speeds or they've figured out a way to use one or all of those three methods of travel without needing a possibly impossible amount of energy. Either way, harnessing that energy or not, all of this technology can be weaponised. Such a species is so ahead of our current technology, I think they could not only pull off a convincing masquerade as magic users, but as gods too.

An attack from them would come from nowhere and we wouldn't see it coming. And if they wanted us to see it coming, we would be completely at their mercy.
>>
>>34237816
something something something, it's always night and there is no policeman.
>>
>>34271585
Not all of it can be directly weaponized. If the method of travel does not impart true velocity to the object (eg. Alcubierre warp drives, wormholes) then it is no more dangerous than anything we can make. By using their energy supply to follow the more traditional method of pushing some stellar body over many years to make a hit on Earth thousands of years later, they could harness their energy to make an uncounterable devastating attack but do they really want to wait for that long? In the third scenario, they could apply the FTL engine to the stellar object and send it through the FTL method once it has reached relativistic speeds, but then the question is how expensive is that FTL drive exactly and can they afford to throw them away on one shot weapons? If each unit of the FTL drive is individually very expensive at the minimum but can be scaled to very large ships for little extra cost, then it makes more sense to reserve them for big motherships and use more conventional expendable weapons. It all depends on how the circumstances and coincidences fall in together.

It is not a guarantee that Earthlings have no proper recourse to an alien invasion. A total war against an interstellar empire, maybe not, but fighting off an expeditionary force maybe yes.
>>
>>34263880

>The warship in question would not only be faster than any missile we could throw at it (so they could just outrun them)

Not likely. Building something that travels interstellar distances will take a long time getting up to speed. Almost all of its fuel will likely be for getting back home. While in orbit or decelerating towards Earth (in the multiple decades we'd have to know about the gigantic nuclear exhaust plume heading in our direction), we could launch sand at it and it would fly into it.

>our retrofitted primitive nukes would be shot down by PD if we could even hit it in the first place. Once you control the orbit you control the planet

Over 20, 000 warheads + whatever cruise missiles and so forth we have is a lot for any PD system to try and fend off. It only takes one to bring the entire thing down.

> they would just paste cities until we surrendered

Presumably they sent an invasion force amd not just a couple of rocks at a percentage of the speed of light because they kind of like the planet and want it relatively untouched. Sending millions of tons worth of dust into the air to nuclear winter Earth sounds very counterproductive to that goal.

That's before considering the logistics of outfitting an invasion ship that can cross interstellar distances and carry enough troops, supplies and gear to effectively combat an entire industrialised planet's worth of defences. For everyone one they lose, that soldier is gone until reinforcements show up a couple centuries later.

Modern humans totally have a homefield advantage over any kind of invasion force.

Technically it's not impossible on a terrestrial planet either. Imagine a tyrannosaurus rex with the intelligence of a killer whale and the ability to use tools.

Assuming that the ayys for whatever reason want to fight us, there's nothing we can really do to protect ourselves. Everyone ITT seems to think they'd waste energy/ammo on destroying us with their ship guns from beyond Earth's orbit but in reality it'll be less effort for them to just pull a big ass meteor from the meteor belt and throw it at earth. That's all it takes to fuck us up.

I like to imagine that aliens already know we exist and instead choose to leave us alone until we mature or something. Kind of like a nature reserve. Honestly if alien's came to me and asked if it's cool to reveal themselves to humanity i'd say no, shit would go so bad so very fast

Imagine something like this, that was usually surrounded by smaller versions.

I never understood why the semi-circle became a meme? It was used in only one battle and a minor one at that.

Could I stick my dick in the aliens?
If so could I start a relationship with the alien?
If so could I dress the alien up like a girl and pretend that Im not alone?
